Deozaan, that's NALY - "New Apps for Last Year"

mouser · « **Reply #30 on:** January 15, 2011, 06:34 PM »

fixed.

now i just have to figure out how to add everyone to the other years.

timns · « **Reply #31 on:** January 15, 2011, 07:05 PM »

I can't wait to see all the new badges on everyone's profiles. Certainly in my case it makes me want to start NANY 2012 (Mayan Edition) already.

I know it's late in the day to be saying this:

If the year went where the 01 now is, you would actually be able to read the year.
Currently, on my monitor anyways, I cant actually see any difference between the icons

yes that is exactly what we will be doing -- and coloring each year differently.

timns · « **Reply #34 on:** January 15, 2011, 07:46 PM »

Now I wish I could travel back in time to compete for the older NANY's...

I hadnt read the thread very closely

Ok still waiting for the dif icons, but i have now given everyone their proper years.

You can see the lists broken up by year now here:
http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=badges;show=nany2007,nany2008,nany2009,nany2010,nany2011,nany2012

NOTE:
It's almost certain that i missed a couple of year entries for people. So if you released something in a NANY year that you aren't listed for, please let me know! (send me a pm) and i will get it fixed right away.

^ That's sooo cool mouser! Now I'm doubly sad at the years I missed.

I think I'll start on a NANY 2011 release now...

Oh. Erm... So are you saying it's too late to start on my NANY 2011 now?

wraith808 · « **Reply #41 on:** January 16, 2011, 06:48 AM »

Umm... yeah.

CodeTRUCKER · « **Reply #42 on:** January 16, 2011, 09:14 PM »

I'll chime in here and cast my vote for...

No color distinction.

Leave the colors as they are. Why? It's simpler and using distinct colors has some issues, to wit...

NANY will lose the continuity that is *presently* ensconced and immediately recognizable.
For the viewers, there would be no rhyme or reason to it unless you had *all* the badges to "see" the spectrum.
What sequence of colors would you start with? Do you start on the "red" side of the spectrum and go through to the "blue," or start with the "blue" side of the spectrum and go through to "red?" Random colors?
How many colors could be reasonably used before you would have to start over. Sure, you can get 65,000,000+ colors out of 32-bit, but how many colors could reasonably be used in so small a space that could be easily distinguished? How many would show up with proper contrast? Maybe 8, I think.
At some point the "text" will lose the contrast and will be hard to discern.
Keep in mind a fair amount of the population have to deal with color-blindness.

On the positive side, the numerical distinction will be completely unique at least for about a century. Besides I think the colors are just fine.

Not trying to be rain on anyone's parade, but I needed to add an element to this discussion that was missing, IMO.

Same colour keeps some visual conformity...

I maybe would wonder about having a different colour for Entrant and Admin (/and maybe volunteer)... I know from this year where my NANY entry was a miserable failure (as far as completing goes), and it would be nice not to have that confusion in the badges.

Good one! Once the year is different for each badge, that's probably all the distinction they need. But being able to earn new badges for any type of involvement is good: I think it would encourage yet more participation on other levels than just the coding part.

that's why i was voting for dif colors -- just to break up the monotony. maybe if they were all in same family -- like pastels.
i think the other reason, besides just the aesthetic niceness of seing not just a row of the same icons, would be that it kind of helps identify the group -- ie the orange nany badges all participated in the same nany, etc.

but i don't think it really matters much, so whatever people want. we can try it both ways and see. still waiting for hamradio to get back to me about the new badges.

nudone · « **Reply #46 on:** January 16, 2011, 10:28 PM »

just a suggestion for the small icons/badges.

using DC's blue gradient bar for the idea.

nudone · « **Reply #48 on:** January 16, 2011, 10:53 PM »

are you sure you want that one?

maybe you really want this one:

or, perhaps you were dreaming about this one:

mouser · « **Reply #49 on:** January 16, 2011, 10:56 PM »

i prefer hamradio's badge style to the gradient.. i think at that small resolution it just looks cleaner.
