Author Topic: print listing of music titles (Read 17,357 times)

I thought this had been mentioned before on DC but couldn't find anything by searching today.

i have copied quite a few cds to my hard drive. they are all located in folders under My Music (XP) usually under another folder with the cds name.

I am looking for something that would scan the My Music folder for the song titles and then list them along with the path of the title.

Does anyone know of a software that already exists for this or maybe a coding snack to fit the bill?

1) By "song titles", you mean the contents of the audio file's title tag (ID3v1/2 or APEv2), right?
2) By "path of the title", you mean the path of the audio file itself, right?

techidave · « **Reply #2 on:** July 12, 2010, 12:14 AM »

by song titles I mean whatever the file name is and the path would be the folder path.

like this:

a song could be called "homeontherange.wma" (or mp3 it doesn't matter. it is in a folder like c:\user\documents and settings\my documents\my music\american ballads\homeontherange.wma

I am looking for something that scans the my music folder for all song titles or filenames and then reports in a alphabetical listing by song title or file name and then in another column it would report the folder it is stored in like american ballads.

I hope this clarifies your question.

the complete path wouldn't really be necessary but if that is the only way then thats that.

The reason for this request is this. the church laptop as 15 or 20 folders that I have copied cds to. Since we sometimes sing songs from these cs, I need a way to find them quickly. So hence the request for something to scan a certain directory reporting the names of the songs, title or whatever. sometimes they will have Track 01, Track 02, etc. And sometimes they will be in sub folders like My Music\american ballad\american ballad\homeontherange.wma

You just want audio files listed, right? So, anything with the following extensions:

AIFF, AIF, AIFC, MP1, MP2, MP3, OGA, OGG, WAV, MO3, XM, MOD, S3M, IT, MTM, FLAC, WMA, WMP, WMV, MID, MIDI, RMI, KAR, WV, WVC, AAC, MP4, M4A, M4B, M4P, APE, AC3, SPX, TTA, OFR, MPC, ALAC, SHN, TAK

That should cover most all audio formats I know.

works for me.

Do you want to do anything with the list other than view it? Double-click a row to launch Explorer at the path...or to launch the file in the default player, etc.

techidave · « **Reply #7 on:** July 12, 2010, 12:34 AM »

I was thinking either a view or print. but now that you mention it to double click a listing and have it play the selection would be a nice feature.

Please give this a try:

Double-click a row to run the file.

Wow Skwire. That was quick. The program scans fast too.

When I click on the filename column, it sorts by 01 xxx, 02 xxx, etc., instead of the name itself?

The double click works too!

Do we have the option to shorten the path file name?

Is the 01/02/03 part part of the filename?

Shorten it to what? I can make it where you don't see that column if you'd like.

techidave · « **Reply #11 on:** July 12, 2010, 01:01 AM »

or can the track number be located to its own column to the left of the filename column?

it looks great!

techidave · « **Reply #12 on:** July 12, 2010, 01:02 AM »

shorten it to show only the folders under or after the My Music folder and not the c:\docs and settings\user\my documents.

techidave · « **Reply #13 on:** July 12, 2010, 01:03 AM »

I am guess that the 01,02 is part of the file name. could the sort be set to exclude the numbers?

Unless your files are named in some sort of standard way, parsing out the track number could get ugly. I'm guessing your files are not fully tagged, eh? Reading and displaying tags, instead of relying on the filename, would make things MUCH easier for something like this.

Try the latest from the same URL. You may have to clear your cache. I also increased the scanning speed at the cost of some CPU usage. I feel it's worth it and you may not even notice it.

Not easily, no.

techidave · « **Reply #15 on:** July 12, 2010, 02:15 AM »

no i haven't bothered to learn about tags yet so I don't use them, i will try the latest version in a bit.

thanks skwire

techidave · « **Reply #16 on:** July 12, 2010, 02:42 AM »

I like the shortened path better since everything i copy is in the my music folder.

i guess i need to learn about tags.

skwire · « **Reply #17 on:** July 12, 2010, 08:25 AM »

So, is that second version okay? If so, do we call this one done?

techidave · « **Reply #18 on:** July 12, 2010, 10:36 AM »

as far as I can tell it is done, I won't have a chance to play with it much for a couple of days. So unless a bug is found, it is done.

in the mean time I shall try to readup on tags also.

I didn't know it even was possible to record CDs WITHOUT tagging! If you use the default player to handle the recording of the CD, it will automatically tag the files (at least if you save in .wma or .mp3). Explorer will display the tags in "details"-view:

edited If Explorer only is showing the filenames, you will have to first right-click the "name-bar" and make your choices:

Most of these informations are purely based on the tags that Windows Media Player automatically has coded the files with.

English please Curt.

your screenshots are all greek to me

most of them were ripped with WMP. I didn't record them just ripped them to my hard drive is all.

skwire,
two things I would like to see added to your program.

1. the ability to save the result
2. to export it to excel.

I don't know if these are possible or not.

1. the ability to save the result
2. to export it to excel.

1) Did you want to be able to save lists manually or did you want the app to just automatically save/load the last list contents?
2) I can export to CSV format which you can then open in Excel. Is that acceptable?

techidave · « **Reply #23 on:** July 28, 2010, 11:40 AM »

a manual save would be fine.

csv format is ok too!

thanks!

Here you go: http://skwire.dcmembers.com/apps/snacks/FileParentView.zip

Changes:

File, Save list option.
File, Save to CSV format option.
