Pdf tools-Getting Better
« on: May 26, 2010, 08:09 AM »
These two tools presented by gHacks and freewaregenius are a big step forward imo.

Nitro Pdf Reader

JPDFbookmarks

I don't know much about the bookmarking of pdf's, maybe it's always been in some pdf viewers and programs. I don't know. But this article drew my attention to this feature.

And the Nitro pdf reader seems more advanced then your average free reader.

I think it's okay to post this here (more PDF tools):

I found a couple of interesting looking PDF tools here the other day (CHIP.de)

it's in German but with screenshots (& download links) so you'll get a fair idea of what you're looking at
&
I havent tried any of them yet :p

Numbers listed here are of image (a bit stupidly, image #1 = 20th place in the list. Full list doesnt seem to be shown anywhere)
1) Adobe Reader speedup
2) scan2pdf
3) image extraction
4) PDFTK Builder
5) PDF Unlocker
7) PDF Explorer
11) PDF Split and Merge
13) Word to PDF
14) PDF to Word Doc Converter

I think all download links are to freeware or to free versions
The others in the list are more obvious choices mentioned here elsewhere

The new Nitro reader looks like a nice step forward, though PDF XChange Viewer has offered many of these features for free for quite some time, so it's a bit frustrating to see everyone getting excited about Nitro when it's really just "joining the party" that others started. ;) That being said it's a more well-known name than PDF Xchange Viewer, so hopefully it will catch on. I think the UI might be a bit better, too.

I haven't tried Nitro yet, but did have a couple concerns I thought others might be interested to consider.

First, PDF Xchange Viewer can be used for commercial purposes for free, as far as I know. I don't know if Nitro is intended to remain free for that purpose, but hopefully so. The built-in collaboration features would tend to suggest the answer is yet.

Second, for those concerned about privacy, make note of this "feature" listed on their website:
"Product Improvement Program: gathers anonymous statistics about usage patterns and click sequences, to help us improve Nitro Reader’s tool functionality and user interface based on your live use of the product."

PDF Xchange viewer really rocks  . I have been using it for years. They have a portable version too.

Here some small hidden PDF Xchange tricks:

Open a pdf, then go to File>Export and you can export the pdf to image files with a whole slew of different options and formats.

Open a pdf, go to File>Document Properties > Security and you can encrypt your PDF even to Adobe 9 format with 256bit AES.

Otherwise my favorite PDF tools are:
PDF SaM
PDF Analyzer
PDF Creator
jPDFTweak
BeCyPDFMetaEdit

Thanks for the posts about this and the lists of other pdf programs.

I use PDF Xchange as my viewer and Nitro 6 for other pdf work.

JPDFbookmarks

I've used this a bit to add / edit / export (dump) / import (load) PDF outlines.  Seems to work pretty well.

It may replace my use of BeCyPDFMetaEdit for PDF-bookmark-related activities.

gripe
The shortcut keys leave much to be desired at least when using Xubuntu -- perhaps the UI-oddness is a function of the application being Java-based...

lanux128 reminded me of PDF-XChange Viewer, which currently (version 2.5.197) has the ability to add / edit bookmarks.  So far in limited testing, I've found it to work under wine ok too.

(Didn't find any ability to import / export bookmarks though.)
