Sniper Elite for $2 on Steam

[Deozaan]

Hello,

I personally have never played this game and don't know anything about it, but mouser is always talking about how it's one of his favorite games ever, so it caught my attention today when I saw that it is on sale on Steam all this week for just $2.

http://store.steampowered.com/app/3700/

I bought it, but can't play it since my gaming PC doesn't have an internet connection at this time, so I can't download it yet.

IT BETTER BE GOOD MOUSER! I bought it on your recommendation alone!

[mouser]

great game.

[JavaJones]

Ooo, I loooove sniping in other FPS games. Should I get this?

- Oshyan

[mouser]

that's an easy yes.

[JavaJones]

Hehe, ok. Now to go sign up for Steam.

Sniping in Sniper Elite is as different from sniping in other games as ... I can't think of a metaphor.  But it's *really* different.  But it's a decent enough game for $2- I got it for $2.50 at the Christmas Sale, and haven't regretted it.

EDIT: I didn't really tell what the difference was.  You have to think and reason like a sniper- that includes heart rate on shots, awareness of muzzle flash and report for relocation, windage... and you're using WW2 era rifles, so it's worse than a modern game is with these factors.  And there's also the patience factor.  There's not really been a WW2 era shooter with this level of detail towards sniping that I can remember.  So if you like being a sniper in other games, this will be cool.  If you like using the sniper rifle in other games (i.e. like the kills and such), this game will be a bit frustrating.

[JavaJones]

Hehe, yeah I figured any game focused on sniping would be pretty hardcore. And I read the description. So I pretty much knew what I was getting into. Haven't tried it yet, but I'm ready to *try* to be serious about sniping...

[mouser]

it's really not that hard core at all -- at least on certain difficulty levels.
i wouldn't say you have to do much different from any sniping in fps games except aim a little higher, at least on easy difficulty levels.
it is more of a stealth game though, and much of the enjoyment comes from watching your bullet fly in slow motion.

[wraith808]

I'm not sure what difficulty level I'm on... but depending on the range, it's almost *impossible* to get a headshot if a target is moving, and anything other than a headshot means that you're pretty much re-loading in many (most?) cases.  Contrast that with TF2, the BF series, CS... where I get headshots without thinking about it... and that's why I give it the hardcore when juxtaposed with them.  And yes, aim a bit higher... but then there's the breathing and heart rate to consider.  But it's fun nonetheless

Heh, same here

Maybe with all of these people on steam with it, we can get some matchmaking together for a DC sniper hunt

that sounds great! it's been too long since the last DoCo games get-together.

Sniper Elite also has some pretty detailed hitboxes, you can detonate grenades on your opponents belts.

I did buy it because of this thread - havent tried playing it, stuck travelling on a work laptop that probably cant run it

The game is simply awesome.

When you are done with the single player campaign (which is fun in itself), make sure you try multiplayer...

This game has a very dedicated community, considering it is a bit on the budget side and has not been updated by devs in any way. People are thinking creatively about adding more fun and challenge to the game, e.g. the "no cross" mode, when you cannot cross a player-agreed line (e.g. a river) and you have to lie in wait to snipe the opponents from afar.

[Proximo]

This is one of my favorite Sniping games of all time.  I own it for the Playstation 2 and it's the first true sniping game I have ever played.

Snipers are stealthy, take their time, time their shots, recon the situation ahead of time.  You do a lot of slow crawling in this game to get into a good position, you mask your shot with the bombing in the backdrop of the battle.  You try to take out targets in a way where they will not alert others of your presence, so you must pay attention to who is facing who and what patterns they patrol.

It's a fantastic game for those who enjoy the true essence of sniping.  If you think this is like Moder Warfare 2 or Bad Company 2, you will be frustrated.  Instead of a kill every 20 seconds, think of a kill ever 20 to 30 minutes.  But you had to EARN that kill by crawling your way into position, checking your surrounding, finding the enemy and understanding their locations.

Great game.  Wish they would make Sniper Elite 2 with today's graphics.

Sniper Elite... now with less DRM... on GoG.com.

It's 9.99, but has no DRM.  If I didn't already have it on Steam (and for $2.50 natch), I would snap it up.

After reading this thread I have revisitied the single player campaign... This is fun! I have forgotten how clever the AI enemies appear (even if they really are not).

I've tried to do a covert kill, but did succeed - the Russians got aware of me... Two tried to flank me while the third was busy rescuing his comrade... Fun, fun, fun!

Of course, the fact that I've played multiplayer for several years did not hurt either - most of my kills are long range headshots

I did this by accident on the first level.

You probably know that you can also explode tanks and trucks full of soldiers - all you need to do is to shoot the fuel cap (not that realistic, but still fun)...
