I was disappointed by the article - some of the sites look great in person, but the Smashing article managed to pick out too many stylish-designery-aren't-we-cool pics (with a high percentage of beautiful women involved) - I'm jaded with all that, never was a fan of it particularly, but it's all just so 'let's make this a perfect make-believe world (where we're especially cool)' that doesnt have much to do with reality

maybe that's the point of that direction/style - distraction from reality or something? More like delusion I think - I'll shut up now..
Anyways,
I did get to see some great pics once I went to some of the sites so thanks Zaine

I've bookmarked Steve McCurry, in case I some day get a lot of money; that guy has both the eye and the hearth. Wow! But of course, he already proved that more than a quarter of a century ago, 1984, with the famous Pakistan Girl from Peshawar. Other than that I was quite disappointed with all these sites. Yes, they are clever at/with what they do, but they only gives you a small flash picture; "Look, Be Impressed; but pay me or get nothing!" Maybe my disappointment should be targeted at smashingmagazine; why are they promoting professional photographers only?

Most of the photographers' work also was a disappointment; glamour without credibility.
Nothing to capture my heart or soul.

Some nice finds.. reminded me of
http://photo.net/gallery/
or you could start at
http://photo.net/gallery/photocritique/filter

- where many really talented photographers display the best of their work.

Thousands of photos in hundreds of galleries.. some are great to add to your (rotating) wallpaper..

I'm not even sure why I'm posting this - it's different from the last selection (edit: maybe I'm in the wrong thread - this link being photos as opposed to websites...), but a very 'graphicky' bunch of images, not so much to my taste but ymmv
I liked this one -

wanted to post the source of that image but this was as near as I could find - http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs41/i/2009/003/f/c/Falltuer_by_5letters.jpg
