Of those 17% with none, how many are modern operating systems, I wonder.  I would hazard a guess that none are, or a very small subset.  So we're looking at Windows 95 systems... I would doubt that anyone but personal users would still be using Windows 95-era OSes :)

I bet when Cheetahs race and one of them cheats, the other one goes "Man, you're such a Cheetah!" and they laugh & eat a zebra or whatever.

I work in schools... You'd be surprised.

In any case, without true statistical studies (hard(er) numbers), everything becomes pure subjective speculation.

But enough hijacking... Let's got bac to the main subject : What's your *favorite* programming language and, most importantly, *why* ?

javascript for now, just because it's one of the ones I learnt recently, and it was absolutely thrilling to discover the fun things it could do, you know the whole dynamic programming thing:)

My personal view on this is python. Reason being, python is intentionally designed to be concise, yet readable. If python code is difficult to read, it's usually done that way intentionally.

Also, it is very good with data and string manipulation. While it isn't insanely picky about variable types, it's not exactly lax either. It is a good mix which allows for easy adaptations to many environments, making it not only very quick as a rapid prototyping language, but also very multipurpose for a very wide variety of tasks.

Interesting that there has been no mention of Delphi which I have been using since Version 1. These days it also comes with C++. It has always made VB look lost and does anything I have ever needed.

Delphi is good, and I loved it, but I've since had to move on.  With all of the changes and instability in the companies behind it (the platform is rock solid- but the management... sigh), it became increasingly hard to get work using Delphi.  I've moved on to C#, and as I've increased in competency, I've been able to do everything I did with Delphi, and more besides.  And it has most of the advantages of Delphi, and enough extra that what is not there isn't missed.  And the being able to work has definite advantages.

F# because it is a functional language, and it runs on Net (a lot of libraries available)

I was browsing through book on F# just recently and was really impressed. Thinking of buying the book at very least, it seemed like as a language it was well worth a study.
