Thunderbird 3 Extensions: Your favorite or most useful

[tomos]

stole the title from the Firefox Extensions: Your favorite or most useful thread

I currently only have one extension - and only one theme that I'd go as far as to say that I like it (have a bunch other I wouldnt recommend).
So I'm curious to hear what other's use

AttachmentExtractor http://www.eviljeff.com/?page=moz-extensions
The author was responsive the one time I made contact. I dont use it a huge amount and it has been buggy- but also getting updated regularly

WhiteHart theme https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/3791

[attachthumb=#]

only thing I'd change would be to make the background less white

So any recommendations?

One and only: Enigmail

[Tuxman]

+1 for Enigmail.

Other life-saving ones:

. CompactHeader, brings back the small header pane
. External Editor, because writing long texts in Tb sucks

Also proven useful in the past:

. Mail Tweak, tweaks Thunderbird's behavior
. Manually Sort Folders, recommended for multiple accounts

Still waiting for a fix:

. Muttator, who needs a mouse?
. (Basically works but has some flaws left to fix.)

[dantheman]

+1 CompactHeader

GContactSync seems to be doing fine so far.

Lightning b1 seems to be holding okay too. Just came out not long ago. You can sync it with Google's Calendar.

Alfred Kayser's LittleBird and LittleFox are my favs for Tbird and Firefox. Very small but not too too small!

[mwang]

ImportExportTools (MboxImport enhanced) Most powerful mail import/export tool for Thunderbird. (Thunderbird is quite weak in this regard. E.g., it opens .eml files fine, but can't import them into mail storage.) Can't find it on addons.mozilla.org, has to go to the author's homepage, which has dozens of Thunderbird extensions.

LookOut To deal with TNEF encoded attachments from Outlook.

Remove Duplicate Messages (Alternate) If you receive a lot of duplicate messages.

Show InOut If you like to put in/out mail (to the same person, e.g.) in the same folder.

+1 Enigmail
+1 CompactHeader (who in the *frack* designed the built-in behaviour?!?!)
+1 Lightning b1
MinimizeToTray Plus
Where is my Contacts Sidebar?
Thanks for Manually Sort Folders

I'm looking for something similar to Outlook flags (not convert to task) that keeps an email permanently visible in the UI until it's actioned. So far I can't find anything that will do this.

Thanks a lot for the CompactHeader and MinimizeToTray+ links (I used a tray minimizer for TB2, but didn't bother go looking for one for TB3 that worked ). Two-line no-text flat-button header with CompactHeader is pretty nice.

Oh, something that would be useful: in "message overview" mode (when you've selected multiple messages and TB3 shows an overview of them), is there any way to get it to keep URLs clickable? That would be really useful wrt. forum reply notifications.

[Tuxman]

Where is my Contacts Sidebar?

Not yet updated for Tb3 final, it seems.

[f0dder]

Hm, when using MinimizeToTray+, is there a way to always have the ThunderBird icon in the tray (whether minimized or not), and change the icon when an account has new mail? Currently I get the always-there-no-matter-what icon (from MTT+), but can't find any options to merge the new-mail-available (from vanilla TB3) with it... heck, doesn't even seem like you can turn that notification icon off?

[Ehtyar]

To get rid of the new mail icon, flip the mail.biff.show_tray_icon to false. I'm not aware of any way you can integrate that functionality with MTT+.

Ehtyar.

I imagine you mean the background of the folder pane and thread pane?
I didn't like it ether in TB's default theme.
Add something like this to your userChrome.css or Stylish style: (colors are only examples)

Code: (css)

@namespace url(http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul);

/* Folder Tree background */
#folderTree {
   background-color: #F0F8FF !important
}

/* Thread pane background */
#threadTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row() {
  -moz-appearance: none !important;
  background-image: none !important;
  background-color: #F0F8FF !important;
}

/* Thread pane alternating row background*/
#threadTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row(odd) {
  -moz-appearance: none !important;
  background-image: none !important;
  background-color: #E6E6FA!important;
}

/* Thread pane selected/focused row background(standard style)
 - needed here because otherwise overruled by above */
#threadTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row(selected) {
  background-color: -moz-Dialog !important;
}
#threadTree treechildren::-moz-tree-row(selected, focus) {
  background-color: Highlight !important;
}

(I had to restart Tb to see the effects in the thread pane)

Thanks for the remind about FoxClocks. I forgot to add it to Thunderbird when I switched from Sunbird to Lightning.

Ehtyar.

[tomos]

thanks for the background change Winkie - it works a treat

unfortunately compact header isnt working for me
I thought it might be the theme I using but it not working with default theme either..
[edit] after a few restarts it is now working, with the default theme at any rate [/edit]

On a different note,
anyone know of an addon that allows you to create and/or customise shortcuts?

Have been looking for a while a now.
Did find this info just a moment ago:
http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keyconfig_extension

Right click menu is rather slim so i was glad to find this handy list of shortcuts "en français":
http://www.arobase.org/thunderbird/utiliser-raccourcis-clavier-thunderbird.htm
If someone can find an English version, i'd be glad to know of it.

that works very nicely so far
(I think I actually installed that in FF at one stage but had to do a system restore the next day and forgot about it then..)
One I was hoping for was ability to mark mail as Unread - it's the best way of attracting my attention I find. 'R' marks mail as Read but unfortunately doesnt toggle status.
You can customise keys so I'll have a go at that - see your link & here.  - Unfortunately MarkasUnRead doesnt work or even seem to exist (nor does toggle markAsRead)

here's a list of standard shortcuts from the help site (not sure if that's what you're looking for)

Thanks for mentioning! Version 0.9.10.1 installed and working.

And I just discovered that Allow Empty Subject is also updated to Tb3. I also had it installed in Tb2, but forgot to install it in Tb3...

[dantheman]

@Tomos,

My pleasure!

Yes, that was exactly the page of shortcuts i was looking for.
Thanks!

Isn't that kinda a bad idea? Not only do you run a higher risk of checking antivirus software and spamfilters, but generally it's also kinda annoying to receive mails without a subject?

You're absolutely right on all points. But I normally include a subject line on mails to other people and if I send an quick mail (e.g. to myself from home to work) without one I don't like to be reminded...

Installed Tb 3.0.1 today and Allow Empty Subject is disabled again, I won't enable it and we'll see if I can life without it...

I only noticed recently on the default TB shortcuts page that 'M' toggles read/unread status

Also Shift+C will mark all messages in folder as read

[edit] I notice that page linked to is out of date (2005 last update) e.g. it says Ctrl+Shift+C to mark all read - this no longer works in version 3 [/edit]

My three favourite add-ons are by far:

Thunderbrowse https://addons.mozilla.org/thunderbird/addon/5373/

Did your friend send you a cool link? Want to read the rest of that interesting article? Don't want to open up your web browser just to view it? You don't have to! Just view it in Thunderbird with ThunderBrowse!

ThunderBrowse adds browsing functions to Thunderbird, allowing you to be able to view websites without having to open another application. You can easily save time, space, and memory usage by opening up the website within Thunderbird. ThunderBrowse is easy to use and unobtrusive.

ThunderBrowse is a tabbed browser that supports almost all websites and includes the standard browsing features that you are used to.

ReminderFox http://reminderfox.mozdev.org/

Never forget again: ReminderFox remembers things so that you don't have to!

ReminderFox is a simple yet versatile reminder application for Firefox and Thunderbird that lets you:

    * Display and manage lists of reminders and ToDos
    * Make sure you remember all of your important dates (birthdays, anniversaries, etc) via easy-to-use lists, alerts, and alarms.
    * Be reminded where you won't forget - right in your browser without the need for separate calendar software.

Please see the FAQ for detailed information, videos, and screenshots.

and

FavLoc https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/2140/

FavLoc allows you to set folders as "favorite locations" to which you can easily download. FavLoc menus will appear on the File menu (for saving pages), the context menu (for saving images and links), and on the download prompt.
