Hi,

I'm looking for a good RSS feed reader. I've used Feedreader for a while, which I have been quite happy about, but thought it might be nice to see what other options there are

.

I understand FeedDemon and SharpReader are also popular.

What are your recommendations?

tenseiken · « **Reply #1 on:** May 01, 2005, 05:26 AM »

I also use Feedreader, and I'm reasonably happy with it. An RSS reader isn't something I'm willing to pay for though, so FeedDemon is out of the question for me. SharpReader looks better anyway, to be honest...

Jibz · « **Reply #2 on:** May 01, 2005, 07:45 PM »

The main thing I wasn't so happy about with feedreader was that there was no way to get an overview of all new items other than clicking through each feed to see. I can see they've added something to do this now, albeit somewhat simplistic.

Rss Bandit also looks promising .. though it's .NET like SharpReader.

I've been using FeedDemon through a full version now and I've come to appreciate its clean interface, customizability, and features like podcasting and the ability to shut down scripts, ads, ActiveX, etc. Lots of different templates to allow you to read your feeds in any way you prefer.

I installed the demo of FeedDemon, and the interface is quite nice.

I couldn't find any options to control scripts, ads or ActiveX though .. where do you do that?

Sharpreader made my system freeze. I know it sounds bizarre, but it really did--reproducibly.

mouser · « **Reply #6 on:** May 08, 2005, 12:21 PM »

sharpreader is .net.
and java apps are the most consistently able to make my machine spontaneously reboot.

um.. weren't java and .net supposed to be the "safe" languages?

Scott · « **Reply #7 on:** May 08, 2005, 04:10 PM »

I'm glad to hear that I'm not the only one to have weird experiences with interpreted craplica...--oops, "applications"--but I've never had the problem with any other Java or .NET app.

zridling · « **Reply #8 on:** May 10, 2005, 09:06 AM »

Jibz, have you looked at RSS Bandit? It's Open Source and has a pretty large and strong user community built around it now.

Jibz · « **Reply #9 on:** May 10, 2005, 09:32 AM »

Yes, I looked at it -- seems very nice. But I don't really like that it's a .NET application

.

There is another topic on this forum about RSS readers (http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=201.0), but nobody has touched it in several months. I'm new to using RSS, and it looks like it could change my web-habits substantially. I've picked up GreatNews on Zaine's recommendation, but I would like to hear opinions and suggestions from others... What's the best RSS Reader in your opinion?

I tried several RSS readers and am now using the RSS reader plugin (called "Web Clips") from the new, great Google Sidebar: http://desktop.google.com/en/

Does everything I need and comes handy and free!

m_s · « **Reply #11 on:** November 16, 2005, 07:33 PM »

Okay, BrotherS, I'll leave Mouser to close down the new thread I started...

The problem with your way is that you need to run GDS, and I now prefer Archivarius as my desktop search (http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=1046.0)... ;

FeedDemon looks good, but before I go spending any money I want to make sure that I would really use a reader. SO any recommendations for Open Source or Free or Donationware? I don't really want a list of names, but rather to hear people's experience of using them.

Thanks.

Hmmm, just found this short article on the future of FeedDemon - I think that's turned me off it... http://www.recommendedwebtools.com/index.php/61/newsgator-and-feeddemon/

Yes I got stung by this sell out. I set up the software and then a week later I when I tried to use it it wouldn't login because the authentication system had changed suring the buyout. I eventually got it working agan but I have lost confidence in it, and certainly don't want to pay a subscription for an essentially free service provided by other companies. I don't particularly like the free online service.

They do offer a plugin for Outlook and I tried it but quickly dumped it as I really don't want to be downloading and deleting hundreds of messages everyday.

I can't say I am using RSS extensively, but I find Maxthon's RSS reader facilities more than adequate and its free.

Having siad what I did, Carol, I nonetheless went ahead and downloaded a trial of FeedDemon, and all I can say is Wow! To my mind, this is the best of the various readers I have downloaded and tested this evening - by far!

Carol Haynes · « **Reply #15 on:** November 16, 2005, 08:23 PM »

Yes it is good but do you want to pay $20 a year just to use it?

jazper · « **Reply #16 on:** November 16, 2005, 08:43 PM »

Thought I would point this out, straight from Nick Bradbury's mouth. Yes, its old but may help in deciding whether to buy FeedDemon or not....

http://nick.typepad.com/blog/2005/05/newsgator_acqui.html

And it appears you can still buy it as "standalone" from newsgator.

m_s · « **Reply #17 on:** November 16, 2005, 10:01 PM »

You can buy it as standalone... at the moment, but this, which I just received from a NewsGator customer services person, muddies the water regarding the future:

"As for the future of FeedDemon, v1.6 will soon be released and rolled
into the NewsGator subscriptions. I believe it will continue to be sold
as a stand alone product, but cannot say that is definite as things
change very quickly around here. "

m_s · « **Reply #18 on:** November 17, 2005, 08:02 PM »

Following on from my last post on this thread, I had another reply from NewsGator:

'FeedDemon v1.5 will continue work as always even once the new version is
released. It's a separate product and will remain that way. The
difference is that the new v1.6 is designed to integrate and sync with
NewsGator. You can still use 1.5 as long as you choose.'

I have played around today with a number of related products - Onfolio, Omea Reader, SharpReader, GreatNews, Folio First, and one or two others (I followed links from the Wikipedia entry on RSS) - and I don't think anything touches FeedDemon for its clarity and neatness. I just love the design and layout of this program!

FeedDemon all the way! I love it.

m_s · « **Reply #20 on:** November 18, 2005, 07:50 PM »

I have been playing with Onfolio today - this is great! I think this might be even better than FD...

If you look for a good (and free ;-) Rss software for your phone, try SubliMobi Rss reader (http://www.sublimobi.com)."

I don't know anything about RSS, but I see that WebSite-Watcher can do something with it, converting RSS into readable HTML. Whatever that means

f0dder · « **Reply #24 on:** July 02, 2007, 01:10 PM »

Website-Watcher does work as a RSS reader, but it doesn't feel all natural and nice. So if you're using more than a few RSS feeds, and use them for news and stuff and not just file notifications, a dedicated RSS reader is probably in order.

Still haven't found a standalone RSS reader that I like (which means very lightweight and nice), so I'm using WSW for now.
