Anyone else hosting a Windows 7 launch party?!

[Darwin]

Title says it all (or most of it, anyway) - I applied to host a Win7 launch party and was "selected". WTF?! Now what do I do?! Anyone else in the same boat? I figure that there must be at least a couple of other hosts out there in Cody-land and I'd like to hear from you.

first thing to do is watch this and laugh at it and agree not to be like these people:

after watching that you should all be laughing so hard that you can enjoy yourselves.

Are strangers going to come to your house for this?

[tomos]

I gotta say I dont really know what they're about - do you need to try and sell Win7 or does someone come and do a presentation...
or what's the idea of them?

Nah... I get a free Win7 Ultimate disc beforehand and show it off to my guests. I'm inviting family and friends and will show them Win7 running on my notebook. I figure I'll be doing this on and off over the next year anyway, so I might as well get it all out of the way on the 22nd and get a free Ultimate disc to boot! This way, I can do an in-place update from Vista Ultimate without having to wipe my system and do a clean install (don't worry, I know that this is risky; I'll take an image of my Vista install beforehand, just to be safe...).

I didn't really expect to be selected for this but now have to actually figure out what to do!

Mouser - saw that video this morning and spent 6 and a half minutes squirming.

I think I can see where microsoft is aiming with this..
Instead of having what they had with vista (loads and loads of people saying they hated the OS without actually ever having been in contact with it), they can increase a bit the rate of exposure to the OS.
The video is just ridiculous, but maybe the idea makes a bit of sense.

[tomos]

do you have a beamer Mike?
that might help, or might make it too much like a presentation?
Are there no guidelines from MS?

How do you apply? ('FREE' always gets me going )
What's to stop you just having a nice party and not paying too much attention to Win.7 (or whats to stop you from just taking your free disk and doing nothing... I grew up in a land of corruption - that was the first question that came to my mind)

sorry for the barrage of questions - answer whichever you want

[Darwin]

Tom - these are all good questions. I do not have a Beamer, sadly (more of a M-B man myself, though). I'm not sure what's to stop me from taking the disc and saying "ta" and then forgetting about it. I'm going to have a small party and spend a bit of time showing off Win7 and move on from there. The only "expert" in the room (where Win7 will be concerned) will be yours truly - Microsoft have a bunch of videos on-line for me to watch ahead of time.

Applications to host these parties are closed, AFAICT.

[Darwin]

Just occurred to me - what do you mean by Beamer, Tom? A BMW or a multi-media projector?

[f0dder]

I've been running Win7 since the RC, and I've got the RTM version (not installed though) for.. some weeks? from school's MSDNAA. So I'm not going to throw a party, except for the little party every time the machine boots with blazing speed

[Hirudin]

Surely he meant what we know as a projector. Even though I consider myself a projector expert the first thing that popped into my head was "BMW" as well.

Another one I like is that "torch" and "flashlight" sometimes have the same meaning.

Well b4 anyone laughs,I applied, as my girlfriend is running the RC, much better than vista.

I was accepted too.

Hwhat am I doing?  A virtual party of course!

my usuall web is http://tux.isa-geek.org
party web is  http://win7party.isa-geek.org

Its not finished yet, if anyone has any ideas for what else I could do with it let me know.

[jgpaiva]

johnh10000: the site you linked to has a low WOT reputation.
Furthermore, the "virtual party" linked in the site has absolutely nothing to do with windows 7.
What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

What is a WOT reputation?  Ok what am I tring to achive?  As MS or was it Houseparty, said there may be media intrest, so I had to do something.  I run Ubuntu servers, as have a helath dislike for MS.

I only linked there as it was the first virtual party site I found.  I'm thinking about a virtual bar, as we have achatroom, etc.

any ideas?

[jgpaiva]

Wot means web of trust.
However, I can see how the sites get a bad reputation. They have a dynamic DNS, thus if any of the sites hosted under that specific dns get a bad rating, all of the sites get a bad reputation.

LOL, well the BMW-Beemer would more suit the people throwing the party in the 'other' thread

I applied but have heard nothing.  I am using the beta and love it.  Its my primary OS right now.  My wife is still on xp on the desktop but if I can score a free copy of w7 she'll be making the move too.

I am such a tramp.  I'll do anything for free software.
