DC-IRLDD Champaign, IL - Aug 29, 2009

DC-IRLDD = DonationCoder In Real Life Dinner + Drinks - August 29th, 2009

Actually this dinner and drinks concept is outdated -- we may go out to eat at the great thai food restaurant, but most of what we will be doing is playing board games of various sorts.

Gothic (John, the dc server admin) and his wife Della (Traci) will be staying with me at the time while looking for an apartment in champaign (yes they are moving here to my neighborhood), and they will have their dog and cat here, so it's going to be a bit of a full house, but the more the merrier so I wanted to warmly welcome any other DC member within driving range to come join us. There is plenty of room to camp out in my house for the night.

I've tried this before and no one shows up but that won't stop me from trying again.

When: August 29th.
Where: My house in Champaign, IL.

No social skills are required.

Send me a message if you intend to come and i'll send you details.

ps. there's a little DC gathering in germany this month as well: http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=19572

Well we had another poorly attended (game night) DC gathering at my house, and ended up playing a new (to us) board game called Tales of the Arabian Nights, which i bought after reading this and this review.

pic486114_md.jpg

The game lasted over 5 hours (!) and was very fun.

We all enjoyed it, and agreed that it was mostly random, but very fun to participate in the funny and nail-biting storytelling elements of the game. As the reviews make clear -- basically this is a board game where on each turn you encounter some creature or impediment, choose an action, and then look up in a massive book what happens to you -- told in a very enjoyable way. Kind of like those "choose your own adventure" books for kids, made into game form. It was a little bit long for me, but even though gothic ended the game as an impoverished, imprisoned, crippled, donkey, he still seemed to want it to go on longer.

We also made hummus from scratch (including grinding cumin with a mortar and pestle so +1 point for me), and gothic got to put in some of his infinite-scoville hot sauce in his bowl (he had fed ex deliver it to my house -- shows you how desperate he was for it -- it was packed heavily enough to protect nuclear waste).  to taste it i put a drop of it on a toothpic, then washed off the toothpic, then dragged the toothpic lightly across a wet piece of lettuce, then folded the lettuce up and chewed it, and it still burned my mouth.

Hi Mouser,
Unfortunately, TX-->IL is a little tough on the budget (alas! I am not independently wealthy), but if you ever have business in TX, I'll hook up a dog sled (wheeled-version) to come meet you if I have to!

Something tells me that the battles ensued in HeroScape during this get together will be of epic proportions and result in total domination by one party. Am I wrong?

These gatherings aren't once a year -- they are whenever a dc person is nearby and wants to come over.
Actually we've been thinking that we might have game night every week or every other week, so anytime a dc person is in the area will work out fine.

We did play heroscape, but actually most games were very close, except for one particular flawed unbalanced scenario/board.

Well... I'll try for next summer, then! I should be in Toronto next July-ish and might try to drive down.

Peripherally, if anyone wants to organize something on the West Coast I'd make an effort to attend. I'd organize something myself but Courtenay, population 22,000, is a bit out of the way!

You know, it might be kind of fun to attend via video chat during one of these gatherings.
Sure, I couldn't eat with you and OK, the board game thing wouldn't work too well either, but it would be fun to meet a few people from DC and say hi.  :)

Mouser, what would you think of having a contest to create multi-player board games to kind of go a long with SKesselman's idea for a chat?  Maybe the "winner(s)" could get a round trip to the gathering and enjoy the luxurious accommodations at the "Reigning Rodent Router's Roost?"  ;)
