I am not too sure of what to think of this giveaway, yet. Is it mine, or a trial?

1) I've followed the procedure, but keep getting this offer to upgrade.
Can it be stopped (other than by upgrading)? I am only offered to see it once per day/week/month.

clickable thumb:

2) The first file I edited will not be read by any other program. Not even by Explorer!
What setting(s) may I need to change?

PhilB66 · « **Reply #5 on:** July 18, 2009, 11:15 AM »

Yes you can disable the nag screen.

1. Make sure Corel Paint Shop Pro X is not running.
2. Go to Program Files\Corel\Corel Paint Shop Pro X\PCUUI\, make a backup (copy) of Container.htm first and then open it (the original) in notepad.
3. Delete all the text, replace it with the following:

location=”pcucmd://Cancel?confirm=no”;

and save it (as Container.htm).

4. Start Corel Paint Shop Pro X and close... you should not get the nag screen again. If that works, you may delete the backup copy of Container.htm

Not sure about your second question, Curt. Did you allow Corel to change your file associations?

Dormouse · « **Reply #7 on:** July 18, 2009, 11:27 AM »

I tested. Did a SaveAs jpg. No problems in being read by other progs. I'm pretty sure that will hold for all other image types.

Seems to be a full version issued as infrequent nagware (& easily disabled as PhilB66 showed - worked for me).

cyberdiva · « **Reply #8 on:** July 18, 2009, 01:22 PM »

It's a fairly common practice for companies to make old versions of their software available for free and then "invite" you to upgrade to the most recent version. Two examples that come to mind right away are the makers of SnagIt (who offered version 7, I think, for free, and then offered version 9 at a discount) and Ashampoo, which bombards me with offers for a zillion additional products/versions/whatever. I don't mind an occasional offer of this sort, but Ashampoo's efforts are excessive, annoying, and hence counterproductive. I'm now much less likely to buy any product from them.

y0himba · « **Reply #9 on:** July 18, 2009, 02:36 PM »

You know, I have never gotten this nag, seriously. I didn't allow the program to check for new versions. I was more worried about the Protexis service that isn't listed in the EULA and silently installs.

Protexis could be stopped and removed as well.

If you disable both of the Protexis Services PaintShop Pro X won't run (it just reports it is damaged and needs to be reinstalled).

Oh, man...I just had some horrific flashbacks! I downloaded a free older version of one of their CD/DVD burning programs years ago and it took me forever to opt out all of the mailing lists that indiscretion landed me on.

Nothing is free when dealing with Ashampoo...you may not open your wallet, but you'll pay in some other way.

And what kind of company name is Ashampoo anyway?

Sorry. I now see that I forgot to tell that I saved my first file as "Lossless" which for some very strange reason only can be done deep down in the settings. Maybe this was the problem, the Corel version of Lossless?

I will test this, tomorrow, but not today.

No, I did not allow any associations.

I posted the instructions here on the forums a while back. http://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=14838.0

If anyone is interested, you CAN disable and remove the unannounced Protexis licensing spyware. THIS IS NOT A HACK AND YOU STILL NEED TO PURCHASE THE PROGRAM AND USE A VALID KEY. It just removes the unnecessary background service that was shoved into your system without your permission.

* Close Paint Shop Pro
* Go into control panel, administrative tools, services sort the services by name, then stop the Protexis V2 service
* Browse to your Corel directory, then into Paint Shop Pro's root folder ("\Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2" where "Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo.exe" resides)and MOVE "PSClient.dll" to another folder, then rename it "PSClient.dll.bak"
* Browse to your Windows/system32 folder and find "PSIKey.dll" MOVE it to another directory, rename it to "PSIKey.dll.bak"
* Browse to "\%Program Files%\Common Files\Protexis\License Service" and rename the DLL in that directory to "PSClient.dll"
* MOVE the newly renamed "PSClient.dll" to your Corel PSP root directory (same place that the PSP executable resides)

Start Paint Shop Pro and be sure it works. If it does, you can remove the backup files, open a command prompt, use "sc delete PSI_SVC_2" to remove the protexis service, then delete the "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Protexis\License Service\" directory.

You can also search Google for "Remove Protexis Licensing". I believe they have started using a new version of the Protexis garbage, the files may be in different locations (C:\Program Files\Common Files) but the instructions are basically the same.

(P.S. This is my 150th post. Woot!?)

Just downloaded & installed this, and I have this one burning question that only someone that has used this and is very experienced with it can answer:

How do I get the classic Windows color picker instead of the crazy one? Or am I just going to have to continue using PSP7?

fenixproductions · « **Reply #17 on:** July 19, 2009, 01:35 AM »

I don't know how does it work for the other guys but for me nothing from Google works. PSP repairs itself (starts installer) after deleting Protexis DLLs. They are simply recreated and service is alive again.

this may help-

-edit-sorry for the link just type in protexis
i'm on an old win me computer
it don't work right some times

Not aware of the google problem but i didn't look it up.

And I'm not sure if Corel recognizes this install as legit, without the product that gave it-Lexar.

Corel requires registration to update it's products.
That's my experience with them lately anyway.

I personally don't like services employed without my consent, mainly because of the load on my computer.

In general a good find, I suppose. If one is up to registering and dealing with Corel directly to update or take pspX as it is, without updates which may not make much difference in use.

I am sorry but your links miss the point.

The question is: how to remove Protexis and still have valid PSP installation but most of the answers given on Corel's board end up with running this service again.

cmpm · « **Reply #20 on:** July 19, 2009, 03:10 AM »

The point of protexis is a valid license check directly from Corel.
That is how their programs work and I don't think it can be stopped by any means.

app103 · « **Reply #21 on:** July 19, 2009, 03:16 AM »

From what I understand, the newer version of protexis, you have to start the service, start PSP, wait 10 seconds, kill protexis service.

Easiest done with a launching script.

This was copied from the comments on the 4free site:

Quote

——————————————————
== METHOD 1 for newer “Protexis Licensing Service v2″ which is necessary for proper function: you can start the service shortly before you start PaintShop and then stop it, after Paintshop has loaded. You can make a short loader like this:
open text editor and create a file called “StartPaintshop.cmd”
——————
@echo off
REM START COPYPROTECTION
net start “Protexis Licensing V2″

REM START PROGRAM, USE YOUR PATH AND PROGRAM EXE NAME
start “C:\Programme\Corel\Paintshop10\Paintshop.exe”

REM WAIT UNTIL PROGRAM HAS LOADED
wait 10

REM STOP COPYPROTECTION
net stop “Protexis Licensing V2″

exit
——————
“wait.exe” can be downloaded here http://www.ppedv.de/dwnld/wait.zip
best copy it to c:\Windows\system32

——————————————————

Hope this helps.

F6 toggles the materials palettes on/off (is that what you meant?)
You can change the style to Frame, Rainbow or Swatches

BTW, right clicking on a toolbar/palette gives a ton of options.

app103 · « **Reply #24 on:** July 19, 2009, 03:49 AM »

This is the standard Windows color picker:

PSP7 has an option to use it:

PSP-X has a crazy color picker that I can't stand because it makes it quite difficult for me to get the precise color that I want to use:

What I want is to switch to the standard Windows color picker, instead. I don't want to have to launch a second application just to have a normal color picker, and be forced to copy rgb values from the 2nd app to PSP-X to get what I want. I never figured out how to do this in PSP9, which has the same crazy color picker as PSP-X. This is the main reason why I have hated any version that was released after v7 and have stuck with my old v7 for so long.

There really isn't any point to having PSP-X installed if I am not going to use it, and unless I can have a color picker I can work with, I won't use it.
