Very useful and works, especially the first one.
The second has been covered here before.
But I don't recall the first tip about optimizing the database being discussed here at DC.
Made a good difference on FF for me.
Much faster.

Very useful and works, especially the first one.

Very true - my profile folder shrank from 105 to 85 MB and the awesomebar feels distinctly snappier.

as far as I could understand, the database trick is only for FF 3 (three) - and gives only little improvement if any at all, if I only have a few bookmarks and/or RSS feeds?

[nosh]

It made a difference in my case because I never delete history... nearly 80000 entries.

I completely disabled tracking of history, form values or passwords. I only use my bookmarks (which need to be shrunk) and my brain.

Since I open most new urls from my feedreader, I only have to search through all the item there if I need to go back to an old entry/url.

The first tip had a significant impact on my startup time

VACUUM has been mentioned here before, but not in great detail. You should supplement the VACUUM command with defragmenting the .sqlite files.

Tracking of history = AwesomeBar sweetness

f0dder, how do we defragment our sqlite files?

f0dder, how do we defragment our sqlite files?

The same way as any other file - either defragment your entire drive, or use a tool like sysinternals' Contig

[Ehtyar]

Ah, I thought you were referring to a type of fragmentation unique to sqlite dbs, and Google didn't help. No wonder.

Sorry for not being clearer; I guess you could think of the VACUUM command as "internal cleanup+defragmentation", though

[Ehtyar]

That was why I asked, I thought that's what VACUUM was for.

Thanks for the tip, I've done it and my FF loads 10x faster. A contributory factor may have been my deleting the safebrowsing database, which I disabled many months ago but Firefox still loads anyway.
