The arcticle has some interesting facts beyond the catchy title, I liked it.
Thank you.

It makes perfect sense.
I'm not fat, but I could stand a little reduction, so I've taken to limit my portions voluntarily, which I'm ok with most of the time.
...but I can see why most diets fail because quite often after I have eaten a satisfying meal of healthy content (no saturated fats or corn syrup, to begin with...) at reasonable portion sizes, 1 hour later my stomach is absolutely HOWLING for a handful of cocktail peanuts or cinnamon toast or a stack of oatmeal cookies with milk or... or... GAAAHHH!

That's usually when I get up and go outside and dig a hole or something...

I never really needed to lose weight, but I liked Julia Ross' book The Diet Cure - and I found cutting down on sugar easier with a more balanced diet. (By the way, English is stupid because it uses the word "diet" both for what you eat and the process/task of losing weight.) When sugar first came to France, it was called "crack"; and after successfully cutting down my sugar intake I now understand why.

From http://www.amazon.com/Diet-Cure-Julia-Ross/dp/0140286527/ :
Quote
Ross's book should be lauded for its educational tone. She warns of the dangers of zinc and vitamin B1 deficiencies, two common problems found in chronic dieters, along with protein and fat deficiencies and adrenal exhaustion (which is particularly common in caffeine fiends). She rails against the most popular diet programs, including the Zone, the Atkins Diet, and even Weight Watchers, for (among other things) their ignorance of food allergies such as grains, dairy products, and sugar. For those whom Ross terms, perhaps frighteningly, sugar addicts or "recreational sugar users," she suggests an amino-acid and fish-oil supplement plan to curb sugar cravings and aid weight loss. Many of her patients over the past decade testify in the book that their environmental allergies and weight-loss problems disappeared after they cut sugar from their diets.

And I just remember something... I think I read it in her book too that when you try to lose weight you should NOT cut down your food intake to virtually nothing (like 2 apples a day). When you do that, your body runs on an emergency program and losing weight is actually HARDER than by reducing food intake moderately (like the article in the first post describes).
Thank you.

I shall recommend that book when someone says they've tried all the diets and nothing worked. For me, I'll go with "more balanced" -- which means more variety -- and "more fish" -- which means more fish. But I think I'll just watch my sugar intake for now, not reduce it (fruits are just too delicious).

Socrates argued for temperance in all things food and drink. It ain't the fat that makes you fat, it's the [excessive] calories. However, much to the despair of my mom, I long ago decided life's too short not to partake of good food. What good is living to be 100 if you're eating pureed succatash from a straw! If you're under 30, get prepared, because your metabolism will soon slow down faster than you'll recognize, and losing weight is ten times harder than it was when you were younger.

I'm a sugar addict and a caffeine fiend. I've managed to coke around 30 days without addiction coffeeding. But I always end up back on the street with something sugary.

I usually eat relatively healthy, but my problem has always been portion sizes. I always have a sugar craving a few hours after a meal if I eat a "normal" size portion...
