i notice that some of the message icon images used in dr.windows are not displaying their transparency properly; i'll fix it in next version.

Bitmap: images\dos.ico
Wave: sounds\Windows XP Battery Low.wav

Button: .&Cancel
;SpecificExe: word.exe,mplayer2.exe,notepad.exe
Author: DeadlyDicco

Although i never tried Dr. Windows, i've just found a site with some interesting errors: http://archive.salon.com/21st/chal/1998/02/10chal2.html
It has some pearls like:

"I'm sorry, there's -- um --
insufficient -- what's-it-called?
The term eludes me ..."

or

"Printer not ready.
Could be a fatal error.
Have a pen handy?"

First of all does anybody even read this message board anymore?

I love Dr Windows, tho I only discovered it recently

Writing your own error messages to irritate friends and family is great fun

Will there be any more releases or is it over now?

P.S. took me quite a while to work out how to write my own dialogues. No one actually mentioned notepad!

Also I love the message about the giant green flatworms that have come to devour earth! (arrowssnakes.cfg)

mouser · « **Reply #54 on:** April 14, 2006, 02:14 PM »

hehehe

might be fun to do another release if we can think of new features that might be wanted.

post any custom dialogs you might make so they can be added !

ZeroCool · « **Reply #55 on:** April 15, 2006, 08:54 AM »

Yeah I was wondering about that, have you thought any more about the sound recording when the error messages come up?

also here's one (it's quite long!)

GPF:
Title: Fatal Error
Text: General Protection Fault: Null pointer exception
Bitmap: images\Error3.ico
Wave: sounds\Windows XP Critical Stop.wav
Button: &OK
ButtonLink: GPF2.cfi

GPF2:
Title: Fatal Error
Text: System Error: Device Failure\nHard Disk not found
Bitmap: images\Error3.ico
Wave: sounds\Windows XP Critical Stop.wav
Button: &OK
ButtonLink: GPF3.cfi

GPF3:
Title: Fatal Error
Text: CMOS corrupted
Bitmap: images\Error3.ico
Wave: sounds\Windows XP Critical Stop.wav
Button: &OK
ButtonLink: GPF4.cfi

GPF4:
Title: Had you goin there!
Text: Just Kidding!
Bitmap: images\bulb.ico
Wave: C:\Windows\Media\tada.wav
Button: &Phew!

Or would that be considered too cruel?

(P.S. the tada sound come with WinXP. I will upload it if people need/want it!

I have never posted here before (just registered today). I hope this string of offerings amuses someone. Just unzip and place all three files into the Dialogs folder of the program. All calls are to sounds and images already present.

The .cgi file:

Title: Hardware Logic ERROR
Text: Windows Has Detected That There Is\n No Keyboard Attached!!\nPress F1 For Help
Bitmap: images\bomb.ico
Wave: sounds\WindowsXPHardwareRemove.wav
Button: .F1
Button: .F1
Button: Keyboard?
ButtonLink: StillNoKey.cfi
Author: Who?

The related .cfi file:

Title: Logic Error
Text: I Don't Understand How Pressing A Key Got You This Message\n As There Is No Keyboard Attached To This Computer!
Bitmap: images\mouth.ico
Wave: sounds\WindowsXPShutdown.wav
Button: HUH?
ButtonLink: UsedMouse.cfi
Author: Who?

The next related .cfi file:

Title: Logic Error Corrected
Text: Aha! You Used a Mouse
Bitmap: images\hub.ico
Wave: WindowsXPStart.wav
Button: Thank You

Since you are having fun with messages from the 'mind of your pc' I thought I'd share this little gem I have had for awhile:

This is a little something a friend of mine made for another friend.

Karen is the woman mentioned in this little program. Her mother was getting cranky about Karen using her pc, claiming she was "breaking it" by using software other than IE.

The guy that made this for her said to put a shortcut to it in the startup folder on her mom's pc and go home, which she did.

We didn't see Karen online for a few weeks after that. Her mom doesn't have a sense of humor.

The file is safe, scanned multiple times with various antivirus products for any nasties, and given a clean bill of health by all of them.

I was asked what the & in the button labels do. for example:
Button: &OK

Answer:
In windows buttons and menus, and & before a letter tells windows to UNDERLINE that letter, and let the user push alt+letter (or just the letter if in a menu) to trigger that button/menu. You'll see it all over your windows menus and buttons if you take a close look.

ps.
app how about showing a screenshot of that broken.exe for those of us too scared to run it

Who? · « **Reply #60 on:** May 18, 2006, 09:32 PM »

Images from running broken.exe.

I was, for the first time (crazy, huh?), browsing through Mouser's programs and looked on the info page for this little guy. I saw that it was inspired by atom.shasher.org so I decided to check out what that was all about. I had fun with it:

Bad Error

Ha! Though now I think it would be fun if this were changed into one of the linking buttons for Dr. Windows. Where Abort! says it can't be done, then Fix it! says it can't be done, then WTF did I do? says operator error or something like that.

Fun stuff!

How do you add messages?

mouser · « **Reply #65 on:** May 21, 2007, 11:20 PM »

just make new .cfg (text) files in the Dialogs subdirectory directory.

ftballboy1 · « **Reply #66 on:** May 21, 2007, 11:29 PM »

Where's that?

This one's pretty obvious, but cruel

I'd love to use it here in the office but a) we're a small business and don't have a managerial structure, and b) last time I pranked anyone like this, with a BSOD screensaver last April Fool's, my colleague almost broke down in tears thinking she'd lost a load of work... and she still hasn't forgiven me

Quote

Title: Network Message from Manager

Bitmap: images\Attn.ico
Wave: sounds\Windows XP Exclamation.wav

Here's a small packet of dialogues I wrote after using this delightful little program. ^_^
Just download them to the dialogue folder, unzip and enjoy!

If you don't want to lose the original about.cfi, simply move it to another folder in the Dr.Windows directory and rename about (modified).cfi to about.cfi.

I am sorry for my other message boxes making everyone thinking is an real Trojan.
I imagine their scared faces.
However.
This is for those with steam and Garry's Mod.
