Idea: Create shortcut location chooser

I think that it would be useful, when creating a shortcut via the context menu, to have a dialog like the "copy to folder" open in which one could choose where to put the shortcut.  Perhaps an additional context menu item named "Create Shortcut here" or somesuch would be a good way to do it...

Skrommel, how about an option to change the name before creating the shortcut? sometimes i want to leave out version numbers or tidy up the names a bit..

@lanux128: I don't feel like having a separate window popping up after the choose a target folder window has closed...
Maybe I could open the target folder? Or I'll look into embedding an explorer window into a gui for more options.

yes, an option to open the target folder would be useful.. maybe this option could be a checkbox placed on the 'install to context menu' window..

Hi,

I just installed CreateShortcutThere as an AutoHotKey script, but it doesn't seem to be working right.  I downloaded the .ahk script and double-clicked it.  It opened a dialogue box querying whether I wanted to install the context menu item, and I said yes.  Now when I right click on a file the "CreateShortcutThere ..." option is available but clicking it opens the "Open With" dialog box to "Choose the program you want to use to open this file".  Shouldn't it open a dialog box for choosing the location of the shortcut?!!

I guess I've answered myself.  I searched in the registry for "createshortcut" & noticed that the "command" subentry had as "Data" a .exe which I hadn't downloaded; I'd only downloaded the .ahk script.  So I placed the .exe in the same directory as the .ahk & it works.  But I'm confused.  I thought w/ these 1-hour softwares you typically have a choice of running them via .ahk or .exe.  Apparently, the .ahk is not self-sufficient in this case.  But this isn't explained at the download page.

I've downloaded CreateShotcutThere.exe and directly installed but I 've experienced the same problem as you had : when I click on the context menu CreateShortcutThere... Entry, it is the "Open With" box who appears  ?! I've thus downloaded the AutoHotKey compiler, installed also and put the .ahk and the .exe in the same directory as the compiler but It always doesn't work . I'm working on XP PRO SP3.
Could you (or someone else) help me about this, please ?

I also resolve myself the problem 
For my problem, I changed the Path of CreateShortcutThere.exe to simplify it because when I copied the value data I founded in the Registry in the Run box (Win+R) I got a message box explaining the path cannot be found thus I simply changed to "C:" to make it simplier as possible and it works

Hi,

"Create Shortcut There" is one of my "must have" apps. I use it 10 times a week! But (and there's always a "but" isn't there!) every time I use it i'm reminded of the one change that would make it perfect:

When we open the "Browse for Folder" window it opens to the location that holds the file that we want to create a shortcut from - which is the least likely location to be our target folder. If, instead, it opened to the last used target location it would save a lot of maneuvering in that window. IE: 95% of the time i'm wanting to create a shortcut in my StartMenu (C:\D&S\AllUsers\StartMenu) from my app folder on the F: partition.

Any way to do this?

Rename your current CreateShortcutThere.exe and replace it with this one.

I just had to redownload CreateShortcutThere and because my memory isn't improving with age, I had to Google it to find it.  In doing so, I stumbled across a number of references to it on Ye Olde Internet, - including in forums here on DC - it's become apparent that this has become a popular little tool.  While I'd like to take all the credit, and can't help feeling a bit of paternal pride, I have to say to Skrommel once again: Perfect!!!  Thanks a gazillion...
