Paid or unpaid. What, when, where? I'm curious.

well, it was in my first full time job after leaving school, I was a computer operator, not a programmer, we wanted a printout that said merry xmas and I got the job of doing it, in COBOL, and I even punched the cards myself  ;)

On April 15, 2006, 06:17:03 AM, I made my first dollar* from coding.

I have it framed and hanging on the wall above my desk, signed by the wonderful guy that gave it to me...

Yup, that's right...I made my first dollar here.  :-*

*It was actually more than a dollar, but it's the first dollar that counts the most. Unlike other dollars, its symbolic value is quite precious and greatly exceeds the $1.00 face value that the government says it is worth.

I don't remember... I wish I did.

My first programming jobs were in high school back in the mid 1980s, written in Basic.  Fun times.  I was very lucky to have a friend of the family who was extremely generous with his time and energy in guiding me to some paying projects and working with me on them.

First software thing I worked on for some $ was a BASIC program controlling an electronic scale, running on an interesting little portable computer: an Epson HX20.

First programming job was in high school, maintaining the library record system written in R:BASE.

It was a scrap metal pricing and tracking system. It was written in BASIC and ran on an IBM 5110. It took me a week to write and test. I asked for $50 to do it, with $10 up front.

I got my $10, but I never got the rest despite my "customer" constantly praising my program and promising to send me a check for the balance.

That incident was the most valuable lesson I ever learned about writing code. ;D

(BTW: $40 x 18% interest x 28 years = $4119 they now owe me!)
