Needed: DVD Audio > MP3 or WAV recommendations?

[Carol Haynes]

Anyone know of any freeware/donationware apps that do a decent job of grabbing DVD soundtrack data and ripping to CD/WAV or MP3 format? Failing that inexpensive shareware apps.

Ideally I'd like something that can extract tracks (I have software that can rip an entire soundtrack but the editing into music tracks is time consuming).

Cheers

I have used Xilisoft's DVD Ripper before, and that was very easy.  It's $35, from here: http://www.xilisoft.com/ ; Whatcha ripping?

I have a couple of music concert DVDs which I would like to listen to in the car.

I have seem IMToo DVD Audio Ripper ($29) which looks to me to be identical to Xilisoft's version (just a different skin on the same product as far as I can see).

Actually I have had a copy of Intervideo's DVD Copy, which I just discovered will do this ...

The only drawback with the IV product is you have to manually enter all the MP3 tag stuff after the rip  - but it will rip audio , scale it and burn straigh to CD which is useful.

Try DVD2AVI,it gives you an option to decode the audio from dvd (vob files) to wav

I think you can get it here,
http://www.divx-digest.com/software/dvd2avi.html
Or check betanews.com

the original site http://arbor.ee.ntu.edu.tw/~jackei/dvd2avi/ is dead
but i know you can still get it and it does the trick, free too. There are other applications i just i can't pull any off
the top of my head at the moment,i wouldn't pay for something like this,it's a basic function in most dvd ripping
programs, search the divx forums,http://forums.divx.com/,pretty much any forums to do with video codecs will
go hand in hand with dvd ripping.

And here's a review of yet another way to rip DVD's.
Caution using this program may be illegal in the United States.

Thanks tinyvillager and clif_notes,

DVD2AVI does the job in a crude way, but you have to edit the resulting file to break it into tracks (for music DVDs) which is very time consuming.

DVDShrink is something I have seen before but doesn't really relate to audio extraction.

Hi Carol, sorry I missed the target on the last recommendation.

My friend Zia, (London, UK) says he likes the look of this one.

Zia's website: http://www.xanga.com/cyberguide
He's into audio video freeware and flash media.

Thanks Clif,

That works quite well to rip a sound track but again lacks the ability to pull tracks - just the whole thing.

Where it does score is speed ... ripping audio from a whole DVD takes 4-5 minutes. (Plus the time it takes to rip the VOB files to hard disc first as it only seems to like hard disc).

Is it just me or does any one else feel nervous about using software with a totally black interface, programmed by Dr Evil ???

LOL, I like it! I think it might be interesting to write the author.

If you can find him - his website is dead ....
