When Acronyms Collide
« on: December 03, 2007, 06:54 PM »
From WSB-TV Atlanta comes this unfortunate(?) story of poor acronym selection by an airline.

The acronym in question: MILF.  Obviously, that means "Many Islands, Low Fares".  Or so the airline in question insists.  However, there is conjecture that the marketeers who dreamed up the promotion knew exactly what they were doing, and some of the imagery in the ad campaign supports the theory.

So is it clever marketing?  Or did one hand not know what the other was doing over at Spirit Airlines?

And if you're not sure what a MILF is, Google is your friend.  After the room has been cleared of children and grandparents.

Hehehe, like the Mitsubishi Pajero, called everywhere like that, except in Spain, for obvious reasons. As Ralf says: If you're not sure what "Pajero" means, hit Google. Yeah, send everyone outside of the room before :P

Dang! That wasn't as easy as I anticipated, Lashiec. I feel like a proper wanker...

It seems fairly obvious that at least where the airlines are concerned, they knew exactly what they were doing.

MILF is just a stupid acronym to use anyway. It doesn't sound cool or mean anything else. No reason to choose it except to bring to mind the slang meaning.

That's hilarious! I can imagine some slogans.

Ride MILF!

MILF - We blow the competition away!

Got MILF?

MILF - You'd be surprised where we've been!

Good grief! Talk about marketing whores! There is zero shame left in any kind of media.

But it is funny!

If successful, this might attract copycats.  Then we'd have a race amongst all the advertising agencies to appropriate the most heinous memes and repurpose them for every day products.
