Mentioning the competition directly can also have blow back. The bottom line is the bottom line - increased sales. I have been using XP SP3 v.3244 and think it is the 800 pound gorilla in the room.

Yeah, I know that there's various (pirated?) beta leaks, but who in their right mind would use a beta version of a service pack, except for testing on a virtual machine to know what to expect for production servers?

Total threadjack, but here's some interesting news about XP SP3... apparently even the beta releases boost performance by as much as 10%:

One last note: SP3 is now a Release Candidate, not a Beta, and anyone can update to it directly from Microsoft. Vista is a Beta, and you are the unpaid tester.

I actually get a huge kick out of the mac pc ads. At first, I was a little irritated, but after I saw the third or so one, I realized they are comedy gold, and now I just look at them as little 2 minute comedy skits. And they are funny! But not in the way Apple intended, I am sure.

Wouldn't surprise me to see the performance gains lost by the time this ships... if I were Microsoft, I'd make sure that Vista Sp-1 is more attractive than XP Sp-3. Now, as an XP user myself, I sincerely hope that I am off my nut.

Maybe the solution is to grab RC1 while you can and avoid the final. I agree SP3 will almost certainly be slower than SP2 just because they want to make Vista look like a viable option.

Can you slip stream XP SP3RC1 ?

Anyway, wrt. XPSP3 having 10% performance boost... perhaps they tested an old install of SP2 against a fresh install of SP3? Or does anyone have a link to a rigorous test with adequate testing description?

f0dder - both a good idea (splitting the thread) and an interesting point about testing... I'll be following this one with interest (not sure if I am ready to install the service pack RC yet or not... I wish there was a way to download an installer for it so that I can archive it for later installation, after doing some due diligence).

The only way I'd run a beta or RC would be in a virtual machine - it's asking for punishment to do it on a live machine.
