VISTA: Failed to save license key information

[Midnight Rambler]

Attempted to input license key under Vista OS but got the following message:

"Failed to save license key information.\r\nPlease check to see if you have permission to write to the application directory.Failed to open keyfile 'C:\Program Files\ScreenshotCaptor\\DonationCoder_ScreenshotCaptor_Key.dat' ( from 'DonationCoder_ScreenshotCaptor_Key.dat')."

This didn't happen as I recall, under XP.

Help?

[mouser]

yes -- it's a flaw in my latest vista build and i will be releasing an update this week that fixed it.
until then a workaround is simply to run sc once as administrator and enter the key.  but expect a fix in the next couple of days -- i'm sorry i didn't release it sooner.

workaround is simply to run sc once as administrator and enter the key.

My login WAS as administrator.  It's the only account set up and I verified it (as the lone user account).

When you issue a fix, you'll inform users in some forum?

[mouser]

im going to work on it now i think and i'll post here.

[mouser]

a new version is now up which should solve this problem.

the new version has been silently updated (ie updater wont show a new version yet but if you force a download and install from dcupdater you will have new version; this lets me get some feedback from early testers before broadcasting the update to everyone).

[Midnight Rambler]

Downloaded and installed dcupdater.

Via dcupdater, downloaded and installed latest ScreenshotCaptor (version now shows 2.36.01).

Entered assigned license key and got message, "Your new license key has been saved."  However, under Help>About, says "License: Free License (7 days before renewal is necessary).

Is this right?  Thought as a Supporting Member, license would never need renewal.

exactly.

so either you put in a non-supporter license or something is wrong.  try the license key you are given from this page:
http://www.donationcoder.com/Keys/index.php

and see if it shows your name and stuff in about box.

[Midnight Rambler]

Simply pasted text from license key page into registration key box and it worked.  Now it shows my name and stuff in about box.

The prior activation failure apparently occurred because the text I lifted from an AbiWord text document (of the activation key page) didn't translate correctly; too many spaces or something.

Thanks for following through.  Guess you can broadcast the update to everyone now.

[mouser]

great

btw.
one of the things that has been fixed in the new key license code is it will immediately report when you put in a malformed license key and not save it.  this is much better than the old method which would always save what you paste, and then complain incessantly.

[Midnight Rambler]

You know, today just for the heck of it, I checked Help>About, and it's back to saying "License: Free License (5 days before renewal is necessary).  My name and stuff in about box wasn't saved after all even though it did show just after saving it.

Rebooting (warm and cold) apparently wiped-out the registration.

Any ideas?

[mouser]

d@mn it vista is really wanting to make me hate it.. please stand by for another vista fix update to hopefully kill this problem once and for all.

[mouser]

A new version 2.36.03 is now available which as far as i can test and see, now seems to be saving and loading vista license keys fine.  I'd love to get some feedback from you guys if indeed this is the case, as soon as possible.  update is available through dcupdater.

[Midnight Rambler]

Used dcupdater to install 2.36.03.  Re-entered license key and found my name and stuff in about box.

Rebooted and still found my name and stuff in about box.  Will cold boot eventually so will post results.

Regarding dcupdater, what is the temp directory path where install files of downloaded programs are saved?  I ask because after  installing programs, I move them to a backup drive.  Noticed "Download Options" tab and changed it to desktop AFTER downloading 2.36.03.

Thanks.

[Midnight Rambler]

Way to go.

After a shutdown, still found my name and stuff in about box.

Can't imagine what would wipe out registration now.  But Vista is still in beta, after all.

[mouser]

glad to hear it finally worked -- thank you for sticking with me and not getting too frustrated.
