10. Cody's Internet Citizen's Club Assignments
Cody, our rambunctious little bird mascot, has decided to form his own club and he wants you to join it!  What's it all about? Mainly it's about being good internet citizens and active DC participants, and working as a team.  In each newsletter you'll have a small assignment or two - like finding a freeware author you like and emailing them a thank you, or participating in a forum poll.  As a Cody Club member, we ask that you perform the Cody Club newsletter task (or else invent one of your own if you object to the one we've chosen).  Occasionally you'll get a little treat, like a postcard in the mail, or a Cody Club iron-on.  Only Cody knows for sure.

So.. have you completed this month's Cody Club tasks yet?

So who wants to nominate some freeware authors (not on DC!) who we should email a thank you to as our Cody Club task this week?

I mailed Chris DeSalvo of www.spacetimemobile.com to thank him for creating MyCalcutor, a freeware scientific calculator for my Pocket PC:

Hello Chris,

I would like to thank you for writing MyCalculator and publishing it for free! I use it very much and it's the best calculator I found :)

Thank you!

John Willemse,
The Netherlands

I emailed, of all people, the author of Curator Defense, the one game in the last year that really opened my eyes to a new genre.  http://www.davidbhowe.net/cd/main.htm

Hi, Jens.

This is just another thank you for creating and maintaining JC&MB Quicknote (I have previously donated).  I find it invaluable, and use it numerous times every day.

Irfanview would be my first suggestion, too. I'll send an e-mail.

PSPad is another invaluable freeware tool. Author is Jan Fiala, support AT pspad DOT com

Another one I'll send some words of thanks to, is "Jackass JoeJoe" of joejoesoft.com (ArsClip, StartRight, RenameMaster): jackass DOT joejoe AT gmail DOT com

I'd do Task #2, too, but for the fact that I use Opera which isn't supported by StumbleUpon  :-\

Guess I'll have to launch Firefox to sign up...

I suggest Locate, by Janne Huttunen. Now at v.3.0.7.1210.
Spoiler
Locate 3.0.7.1210 Publisher's Description:
Locate saves names of all files in your hard drives to file database.
After that you can locate files.
This program works like updatedb and locate in Unix systems.
Win32 based locating program also included.

Web page at: http://locate32.webhop.org

This is to express my appreciation of your excellent program, 'Locate'. It was brought to my attention by a knowledgeable group of users on DonationCoder.com.  I find it very useful.  Thanks!

#2 is not for me (Sign up at the social webpage rating site StumbleUpon.com)

Good point.  It's best not to put emails on this page but point to the authors webpage where there email can be found.  it certainly would be ironic if instead of thanks we brought them spam :(

Or maybe we can use a program to conver the emails to pics or something?

It's actually a good idea for a mod to the forum to obfuscate emails automatically - perhaps i will write it.  but for now lets replace the email links with links to the web page with email address.

My vote for freeware author is Jim Wilsher .The others mentioned here are highly deserving in praise as well - and let's not forget mouser and the rest of the donatinocoders in this group too! Despite this:
So who wants to nominate some freeware authors (not on DC!) who we should email a thank you to as our Cody Club task this week?
Jim is the developer of Bulk Rename Utility and is very approachable and helpful. BRU is also the best renamer that I know of, so check it and him out!

Yup, BRU is a very worthwhile and capable program!  Not that long ago, when I was making particularly heavy use of BRU, I finally got around to sending Jim a donation.
