Need something to delete "undeletable" registry keys
« on: July 21, 2006, 01:17 AM »
I'm having problems with installing BB FlashBack express' latest edition (i've posted in their forum a few moments ago), i can install the app itself, but the capture driver itself refuses to install, did clean install, etc
Found some registry keys (that give me can't delete prompts >:( ) And i'm thinking that might be the
hangup.

Basically something like UNLOCKER except for registry keys.

right click on the key>permission>advanced>then check the inherit permissions box.
click ok, and you will be able to delete it.
If you find a good solution and become attached to it, the solution may become your next problem.

use regedt32 instead of regedit and you can set permissions on keys to whatever you like.

Just right click on the key or subkey and choose 'Permissions ....'

 Thank you both...

 :-[ Too simple. :-[

Side note,i solved the BB FlashBack express problem with an alternative method which was more related
to me running some registry cleanups emmediately after uninstall, the problem being i deleted a temporary
startup program that was suppose to uninstall the old capture driver upon reboot.

I had to go into My Computer properties>Hardware>Device Manager>Display adapters> and manually uninstall
there.Wanted to describe that just in case someone runs into the same problem.

None the the less thank you kimmchii and Carol for advice,i'll log that away in the old memory banks.

Carol, you're a win2k user I take it? :)

(XP only has regedit, regedt32 is just an alias for it. That regedit can set permissions and stuff, though).

LOL - Actually I used to use Win2000 with RegEdt32 but I am now on WinXPSp2 and didn't realiuze that  :-[

My excuse is that I don't generally use regedit/regedt32 at all (and haven't since I shifted from Win2000) as I use Resplendant's Registrar Registry Manager which is much better and has a lot more useful stuff over and above Regedit. It's registry bookmarking is excellent and the search and replace is super quick, plus you see all the references to a search on a single page - which is much easier than wading slowly (very s...l...o...w...l...y) through the whole registry to find something.

Sounds like it's an app worth checking out - I find regedit quite lacking :)

$57.00 USD is a little steep for the average user.

The free version is a bit lite (but still better than regedit). I managed to get the professional version a few versions ago at a discount. It is really useful. You can also edit registries remotely with it!

I'd like to see a discount because $60 is a bit much for me to pay for a reg manager, granted it appears to be highly functional.

I've written to the author of Registrar Registry Manager requesting clarification about his licensing policy (on one page it says "updates for life" on another it says minor upgrades are free) and to ask about either academic licensing or a donationcoder offer. I've yet to hear back but I've got my fingers crossed. Like Josh I can't justify $60+ at the moment... I'll keep you posted.

another alternative is Registry Workshop.

it would be great if someone can compare Registry Workshop vs. Registrar Registry Manager, for me i prefer Registry Workshop, the seach is faster and it has better layout.

I hadn't seen free updates for life but when they recently upgraded from version 3.3 to 4 it was free to licensed users.

Hmmm... Interesting - thanks for the link to Registry Workshop, Kimmchii. It's certainly much more attractive from a pricing standpoint! I'm downloading it as I write this and am going to run it along with Registrar Registry Manger and see how they compare.

I'm off to eat my nang-myun right now... It's 6:30 in the evening and 39 degrees and I need something to cool me off!

I've been testing out Ability Office which I uninstalled (btw looked very prosiming but alas there are still some formatting problems with bullets and indents etc. in WP docs which don't translate well into MS Office or OO).

There are at least 48 "non-deletable" keys (out of 100s of orphaned Ability keys).

Tried a multiple delete in Registry Workshop - no go. Can Registrar Registry Manager deal successfully with this kind of "invasion"?
