"Wrapping" mail in Thunderbird
« on: December 13, 2007, 09:17 AM »
[EDIT] was going to post this as a query but found the answer so thought I'd post the whole lot [/EDIT]

I use Thunderbird for my mail
I've noticed I often get mails from poeple that havent been "wrapped"
mostly they go to the size of the window but if I recall correctly they sometimes need to be scrolled - over/back to read
Personally, I find nothing harder to read than a solid block of text the size of the screen...and scrolling lines the length of a paragraph >:(

So,
I started wondering how my mails look
I send text mails (setting selected in accounts/composition)
with wordwrap set to 75 (set in options)

If my mail is opened online the wordwrap works
but
if it's downloaded to Thunderbird at any rate the wrap is lost

If, before I send the mail I select the text and go to edit/rewrap
then when it's downloaded to Tbird the wrapping is kept.

Maybe I should be sending this to Mozilla

EDIT turns out it is a bug -
solution is:
[in Options]
On the page Advanced – General, press the Config Editor... button. Set the Filter to: flowed  Set the following preference to the opposite of its default (for example, by double-clicking it), so that the setting is:

    mailnews.send_plaintext_flowed    user set    boolean    false

you can also set incoming mails to be wrapped
but
they say:
Notes:

    * Some messages that other people send to you might look strange with these settings.
    * Other people might find that messages you send to them look strange.
Note # 2 there is a little disturbing -
like what does that mean :tellme: (he's a wierdo - his mails are wrapped :D)

I have noticed if I select text of an incoming mail & rewrap that it turns into a block of text & loses any formatting
Have changed the above setting [for out going mail] so will try it out...

Forgot the Mozilla link:
http://kb.mozillazin...Fixed_width_messages

seems to work as would be expected now
i.e. my mails arrive (in Thunderbird) as they left!

(I didnt try the rewrap incoming mails)

well it's nice to know that others dont have to get as %$&*# upset when reading scrolling my mail as I tend to when having to scroll theirs :)
