Since allowing Firefox to update to 2.0.0.11 I have been getting occasional random sudden reboots when I click on the shortcut to launch Firefox - the app starts to load then the screen goes blank and goes through POST before restarting windows.

Anyone else experienced this?

Nein.  2.0.0.11 has been stable for me.

Maybe uninstall and download a complete new 2.0.0.11 package?

Disable all your add-ins temporarily?

Yep - I backed up my profile and disabled everything. Trouble is it is one of those problems that only happens very occasionally (perhaps once or twice a week) but usually when you least need it!!

I'll try downloading the whole package and reinstalling.

2.0.0.11 has been stable for me. I use it both at work and at home. I haven't heard anything mentioned about it crashing around the web either.

If the problem persists try rolling back to a previous version and running that for a few days just to make sure it isn't an unrelated problem like faulty RAM.

It's been 100% stable here before and after UPXing the binaries.

Carol, I thought I was going completely crazy.  My symptoms are not as bad as yours, but my firefox will occasionally crash when I click a link.  It appears completely random.  One second I am clicking a link and the next second I am looking at my desktop.  I can't manually close the software that quickly.  I am certain that the trouble must be in a conflict with an extension, but, like you, I only have the trouble very intermittently.  So, you are not crazy, and neither am I (or at least this is not evidence of it :) )

Mine crashes too...it's an extension conflict as my portable version never crashes.

Sounds like Carol's Firefox is taking down Windows, not just crashing.  That's a bit more worrisome than FF failing.

this prob not of help, but just in case:-

not sure when that FF update was but am using 2.0.0.11
I installed the grab & drag extension about a week ago & disabled it after a few days cause FF was regularly seizing up
everything seemed okay for a few days then today everything seized up (ff was minimised to tray at the time so prob not culprit), even process explorer wouldnt work so had to shut down after ctrl+alt+del (worked) -
I put it down to installing winupdates this morning & refusing to reboot all day long after.. (windows gets it's revenge :'()

Running it in Safe Mode might help pinpoint the problem.

Well having uninstalled Firefox (using Your Uninstaller to remove all the extra registry entries and orphan files) and reinstalled from a fresh download all appears to be smooth (and a bit faster too). I'll see how it goes for a few days.

I did have a load of extensions installed but I used FEBE to backup my profile before the reinstall and have parred down the extensions to well known one that I find indefensible. At lease a FEBE backup means that I can add back any extensions as an when I want if things all seem to be running OK.

check event viewer see if you can find any info there.

No - because it instantly hard reboots nothing is written to the event log.

hmmm....I have firefox always running with minimize to tray add-on.
Surfing this morning, I was just looking, not clicking anything, and it just quit!
Firefox closed but everything else was running.

Here's what I did-
Reloaded Firefox without uninstalling it.

And much to my surprise Fasterfox add-on was on custom.
I would not put it on custom, I don't know enough.
Switched it to Turbo.

So far so good.

First sign of trouble ever, though it was getting slower.
It is faster now.

Since reinstalling I have had no further problems.

I found I had a number of DCOM errors going on in my system log - but they were unrelated to Firefox and are a common problem with Creative Audigy 2ZS drivers - disabling a number of non-essential startup services for the drivers (like Creative CD detect) cured the problems so I am not quite sure which was responsible for the problems.

Anyway - fingers crossed it seems to be cured now.

I've been having the same problem!

I googled "Firefox 2.0.0.11 reboot" and ended up here. My computer has been running rock solid for years, never any problems with Windows crashes. Now after upgrading Firefox to 2.0.0.11 I've been experiencing sudden weird reboots. First I couldn't figure out what was causing them, since Windows on-line web error cause site (the one you cet to after coming back from a crash) just said "problem with a device driver". After getting my fourth or fifth sudden reboot (no blue screen, just like a push of the computer reset button) I figured out that it occurrs when I click the Firefox shortcut from the quick launch tray (to open a new window) while already having FF running in the background. It doesn't happen every time, just once in a while. Very irritating indeed!

The plugins I have are:

Adblock 0.5.3.043
Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.1.2
DOM Inspector 1.8.1.11
Talkback 2.0.0.11
User Agent Switcher 0.6.10
wmlbrowser 0.7.16

I'll try a complete re-install of FF and see if that helps, but I'm guessing there's some memory leak or other problem with either an extension or FF itself.

I feel your pain John ... in my case it wasn't memory leaks causing the problems as the reboot only ever occured when Firefox was loading.

Reinstalling it (after a thorough uninstall using Your Uninstaller! 2008) seems to have done the trick for me .... touch wood!

Cheek - how do you do that when you click on the desktop Firefox icon?

Hmmm, that sounds very very weird, a usermode program shouldn't be able to cause hard reboots like that. It must be a flaw somewhere in a device driver, although that sounds very weird as well... Which graphic card + driver version do you use, Carol and john_doe123? Firefox does allocate a fair amount of resources, so perhaps you have a graphics driver with a GDI resource bug or something? That'd be my best guess.

2.0.0.11 running stable here with "a bunch of" extensions, XP64 Pro, GF7600/163.75 drivers (and that's although I'm afraid those drivers are either pretty bugged, or my graphics card is going to die in the next few months).

If the problem persists try rolling back to a previous version and running that for a few days just to make sure it isn't an unrelated problem like faulty RAM.

It's been 100% stable here before and after UPXing the binaries.
Heh, I wonder why you bother - it doesn't really make firefox start faster... But okay, it was already discussed here.

I can honestly say it seems to load faster on my system, f0dder. Maybe I just like my placebos, OK?  ;)

john_doe123, did you try normal browsing with Firefox in safe mode? If you don't know how to get the mode, or deleted the link from the Start Menu, input in a Run box "firefox -safe-mode".

Also, and this is just a shot in the dark, it would be a good thing to deinstall both Adblock and the Filterset.G updater, and go with AdBlock Plus. AdBlock has some unresolved problems, and the Filterset.G has been know to cause some other ones, apart from being overzealous in what it's blocking.

I'm sure Microsoft will find a way, probably steal your focus, too!  :)

I had a bit of quirky stuff with 2.0.0.11 -- nothing like crashing the machine -- it seems to have come to its senses now.
