Title: List of disc catalogers
Post by: tomos on March 14, 2007, 02:47 PM
EDIT See post # 2 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7764.msg54818#msg54818) for a list of over 200 Catalogers compiled by Crush

Here is a short list of disc cataloguers
, their websites and related threads in DC.

They are listed in alphabetical order with screenshots and info for the better, or better known ones.
But this shorter list is not very scientific, so if you're looking for recommendations it's probably best to read through the couple of pages and see what people say

If you make any suggestions I will probably add them to the longer list-post #2 below.
Feel free to add visuals to your post
:)

If anyone want to do a review/reviews they're welcome to use this if it's any help.

[Prices as of March 2007,
Euro prices hopefully include VAT but unfortunately this often not clarified until you order]

Advanced Disk Catalog hasn't been updated since 2004. It has many good features but lack some basic ones. Like being able to copy the name of a file in the database. I have made a AutoHotKey script to get around that, so if someone else is using ADC and wants to copy filenames then check this out (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7764.msg54945#msg54945) -Nod5 (post 9 below!)

This creates small sized catalogues, but it creates (or created in 2003) one file/CD, so it's not so easy to manage a CD collection with it. - rockyhacker (post 11 below)

Disclib is nothing spectacular. In fact, it has a lot of caveats and it seems like an unfinished project.
Its interface needs a redesign and I don't feel right using it

It's capable of looking inside archives. On the other hand, I'm not sure if you can turn of this feature. At least back in 2003, I didn't turn it off for some reason when I compared some cataloguers.  - rockyhacker (post 11 below)

This list was compiled by Crush (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=51520#biog). Updated using a version from 2009-02-14
Crono wrote a batch file (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8504.msg61390#msg61390) that made it possible to convert it from a spreadsheet to this:

just in case:
to view off screen parts:
click in the table & use right & left arrow buttons to see off-screen parts

Some comments under the links -
probably best to check comments in the column on the extreme right (where almost all comments are shown)

I could add screenshots and some more details - maybe other peoples comments, but I not doing any reviews!!
To justify this thread being in the mini-reviews section, IMO screenshots and comments should be added. I've no problem with you not doing thorough reviews, btw ;)

thanks truckndar   :D

I will be adding details but not putting myself under pressure, so I guess its no harm if you do ...

was experimenting with using minireview template but think it takes up too much space for so many programmes (even cut back to minimal details)

EDIT: was simply going to add comments as I come across them in threads here (or elsewhere)

Great list. One important feature for these tools is database import/export capabilities so any info on that would be appreciated.

Advanced Disk Catalog hasn't been updated since 2004. It has many good features but lack some basic ones. Like being able to copy the name of a file in the database. I have made a AutoHotKey script to get around that, so if someone else is using ADC and wants to copy filenames then check this out. It puts the name of the selected disc/folder/file in the clipboard when middle mouse button is clicked. The script exits automatically when Advanced Disk Catalog is closed.

SetTimer, ADC, 2000

ADC:
IfWinNotExist, ahk_class ADCCLASS_ELCOM
 exitapp
return

MButton::
IfWinActive, ahk_class ADCCLASS_ELCOM
goto copyselected
return

copyselected:

ControlGetText, x, Static4, ahk_class #32770

ControlGetText, x, Static5, ahk_class #32770

Here's two more:

InsideCAT lite [freeware] and profesional [€19.90/$24.90]
http://www.vgtsoftware.com/disc_cataloguer/disc_cataloguer.htm
It's capable of looking inside archives. On the other hand, I'm not sure if you can turn of this feature. At least back in 2003, I didn't turn it off for some reason when I compared some cataloguers.

CatFish [freeware]
http://www.equi4.com/catfish.html
This creates small sized catalogues, but it creates (or created in 2003) one file/CD, so it's not so easy to manage a CD collection with it.

sounds good - doesnt require installation

any chance of screenshot showing the search possibilities?
or,
any pros/cons?

from the website:
Function of fast disk's images creation (one click on a disk)
Search of files, disks and folders on a mask, parts of a name, to the comment, type, date or the size.
The auto-description text and mp3 files, an opportunity of addition of comments to disks, files and folders.
The program does not require installation, can be transferred on CD/Flash together with your disc collection.
The debtors of discs account, function of a reminder.
Own database engine (fdb). For work of the program it is not necessary established MS Office or others DBMS.
Tuning of the interface, multilanguage interface support (english, ukrainian, spanish, french, russian) and an opportunity of language modules' addition.

EDIT: added screenshot above

Post by: pmcg on March 30, 2007, 03:04 AM
I've been using Whereisit for years. I use it to catalog my hd backups, and my current HDs. I also use it to catalog every cd and dvd I've burned. So far I've used it to catalog over 4500 cds. I can load ALL those catalogs and search through them and in a matter of minutes locate almost anything I want from a font file to a game executable  I played 12 years ago.

It's stable, fast, and the author keeps it up to date all the time. I paid for it about ten years ago and have had to pay for an upgrade only once. The thing has so many neat bells and whistles that it would be worthy of an in depth review if someone (not me) had the time to do it.

It searches inside archive files (or not), comes with tons of customizable file-type filters, and indexes across networks, etc.

But most of all it is ELEGANTLY coded. The program settings and features are logical, well organized, and accessible.

If I were teaching a utility-writing class at a university, I would use this program above all others to demonstrate how it should be done.

Please note that I am writing this from the perspective of an END USER not a coder. I do not code. But with 22 years of daily computer use behind me, I can tell when I have fallen in love with a program that is worthy of recommendation.

For those that care about this kind of thing...the program was written in Delphi.

Thanks for reading this.

for me, it used be a toss-up between Disclib and CD Bank Cataloguer but both seem to have moved into abandonware zone.. ;)
tks to you, there seems to be some serious alternatives. good work, tomos..

cheers Lanux128  :)

Peter, that sounds very good (WhereIsIt)

I'm in the market myself for a programme (how i started on this thread ..)
I guess i should have a closer look.

I know a couple of DCers chose WhereIsIt after a bit of debate in this thread  Re: Your experiences with disc catalogers and most wanted/used features (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7183.0)

If you get a chance have a look at the last post there, there's some comments about version 3.73
It's up to 3.83 now so it would be interesting to hear your opinion on the comments there ..

from what I've heard, Locate 32 would do the job -
but it would be nice if someone could confirm that  :)

I started some weeks ago a complete Disc-Cataloger-List (all I´ve found that deserve the name cataloger in my opinion - specialized ones like Music-CD or Movie-DVDs are excluded).

This list has the names, the site-links, perhaps download-links if the sites aren´t existing anymore, Freeware/Shareware/Commercial, the actual/last price, the last update or relase of the program.

I think it will take a while to complete all fields in the list, but only to get you shocked  :D : There are over 170 entries at the moment and about 1/4 of them are Freeware (sometimes former commercial software)! I expect over the half of the entries are absolutely unknown. This list could be used step by step for reviews.

@Mouser or other Boardowners:
There´s only a big problem: The list is a rather big Opendocument and it would kill the thread with the datas. Is it possible to get it somewhere hosted on Donationcoder? Perhaps others could add updates to this list this way?

crush, do you feel like maybe trying to write or team up to write a big long review on these tools?
Title: Re: List of disc catalogers
Post by: Crush on April 12, 2007, 02:50 PM
Tomos started this big list and I talked to him - he wants to make a nearly complete list of all catalogers with short reviews and I told him I´ve found more than the few he listed. I see that the interest in such tools and reviews about them is growing, but I don´t think I´ll write a full review of all. Only the creation of the list took more than 5 days fulltime. The list could only be a source for writing reviews if someone likes to. I used it for myself to see how many progs are existing, how good are they and what are the shiny pearls (best features) of them, how many are still in development and I wanted to see the amount of free/commercial software and the prices of them. That´s all.

The list is now nearly at the end with nearly 200 entries. Now it´s the question how I could post it here. The best thing would be if others could update or add new programs to the list.

sounds great Crush.
I have thought it would be great if others could add to the list because as you say it's very time consuming (& my list only has 25 I think  :o )
Doing screenshots for such a large number would be out of the question I think..
also,
while screenshots make the whole visually more appealing, more often than not they aren't very informative.

just my personal opinion, wouldn't such a long list make a person lose interest? btw, how about introducing some criteria and limit to final review to something like 10-15 apps, the rest can included in an appendix.. we can also suggest that readers who don't like the the first 15 can try out the rest by using the same methods followed for the first 15 and post a mini-review.. :)
Title: Re: List of disc catalogers

I don´t think that people lose interest by the size of the list - they lose interest if the tools they look at doesn´t meet their needs.

To make them comparable you have to pick out the most interesting features people are searching for. The first one finds it more interesting to have thumbnails for pictures, the other one is more fascinated in MP3-Tagging-features, others prefer high speed searches over a very big list of files (perhaps with features to look inside archives) and less memory usage. Some wants to give out money for a good product - others don´t have enough money for that and need full featured freeware-versions and so on. I now can say that out of these huge list only a few meets my personal needs and no one has all the features I´d personally like to see. Such complex programs like catalogers are too different to say what are the "best". You can only say there´s a best one for a special usage.

Which one´s the right for you depends on whatfor you want to use it!

You can believe me that most people doesn´t want to spend hundreds of hours gathering all relevant entries (like I did) and then test them on their own. I´m glad to have this list now and others perhaps, too. The list with intensive reviews is gold for everyone who´s in urgent need of a cataloger. At the moment anything comparable to this review-project is available in the internet. You find only the same few of these programs in the shareware-lists, but other very unkown with creamy facilities and outstanding ideas you don´t find within the "normal" commercial progs are also out there. These were the ones I was especially looking for. I made this especially for myself but would be happy to also help others who can profit somehow from this hard work.

The biggest comparison list I found also had only very few and old entries but this was ok: http://www.cdfinder.de/list2.html The only problem is that this list is looking at rather old and only 68K-/powerpc-processor Mac-Software. This type of list is very helpful to make a good decision. A personal review also would be an addition to something like this. What do you think about it?

I kind of like that idea
maybe the "best" choice/selection -
a sort of a short list with more details
(no-one is volunteering to do "full" reviews but hopefully someone out there might eventually be inspired to do so!)
& then
a full list with minimal details ...

on the other hand -
I don´t think that people lose interest by the size of the list - they lose interest if the tools they look at doesn´t meet their needs.

the table there http://www.cdfinder.de/list2.html looks good.
Still cant get my head around a list of 200 and how that might look - or be presented

also as you say
To make them comparable you have to pick out the most interesting features people are searching for.
conversely,
I think the best idea would be to point out the best features/strong points of the various programmes -
then
if someone is looking for something that does good thumbnails of their photos they can dig their way through and hopefully find a recommendation ...

I'm in a bit of a dilemma here
(or should i say I have a bit of a dilemma here - english is slowly slipping from my grasp :) - dont know if thats from living abroad or the strong beer I just drank too quickly)

Anyways, down to business!
Dilemma is I now have a list of exactly 200 Disc catalogers sent to me by Crush who says I can
You can do with it what you want

with credit naturally -
thats some list Crush!

but I still unsure how to present it.
Does anyone else have opinion or ideas - HELP  :tellme:

I could show it as a table, putting it in post 2,
that would overlap with post one but ....
Post one could become then the "best of"
Thing is I dont really want to commit myself to such long term caretaking of list
But I guess it could stand as a snapshot & people can reuse any info there if they want

Perhaps you could generate a searchable pdf or html from the Excel (?) file and have donationcoder host it. This is the only way that I can think of to get the spreadsheet into the forum quickly and easily. Then you could just link to it from your original post, which could be modified and maybe retitlted (and moved?) to reflect that it's a resource for people looking for alternatives rather than a review. You could indicate that updating the list will be a group effort - we just need to figure out who's going to admininstrate it!

i'm in a catch-22 situation, since all these CD catalog programs involve putting in the CD/DVD and ejecting.. basically i'm doing the very thing that i want to avoid, hence the need for these programs for.. :) anyway, i'm trying out CDVista right now and the program responds quite well.. btw, tomos & Crush, how's the list coming up?

here are some criteria that i can think of:
• still in development
• modern UI (elegant interface, no Win 3.1 icons.. ;))
• able to merge catalogs
• can move discs to other catalogs
• DVD-support (naturally)
• look up info at CDDB for Audio CDs
• this is a plus: able to export to XML or other common format

i'll post here if i can think of anymore useful criteria.. :)

I'm not sure I follow this? If you mean that you have to insert the CD/DVD, have whatever app you're using index it and then eject the CD/DVD, then we're on the same page (and I'm not sure what the alternative would be!). If you're suggesting that you need to insert the CD/DVD to access the index that you've already created, then you're either suffering under a misunderstanding and/or the software you've tried (CDVista?) is odd! I'm using WhereIsIt? and once it's created an index, that's it. I can open and search ALL of my indeces and locate whatever it is that I am looking for without ever going near a CD/DVD. If only WhereIsIt? would keep track of where I've actually put the physical media...
Title: Re: List of disc catalogers
Post by: Crush on April 25, 2007, 11:50 AM
As I see till now - the most of these progs don´t support merging of catalogs. You can usually create different catalogs and sometimes it´s possible to search them all together - in most cases only the pre-loaded ones. WhereIsIt! seems to have a maximum size of 1GB/catalog as I read somewhere - and it´s not supporting unicode. A funny cataloger is giving some sidekicks to whereisit calling itself "HereIsIt!"  :D

The list is still growing - 4 new entries added today = 203 catalogers at the moment

The UI is a double-sided sword: Using standard Win-UI and Libs give in big result-lists an extreme heavy slowdown. Some have seen this and coded own output-windows to speed all up - and these windows often have a different look and behaviour as normal ones.

CDs and DVDs have been a main criteria for me to call something a Disc-Cataloger. All should be able to do this.

CDDB-Lookups are not included everywhere and should not be a main criteria. I personally want to search files by their tags and names. Catalogers specialized at Music-Collections are existing that all do CDDB-support but haven´t reached this list.

Good export functions are only rudimentary supported. You get only a small part of the stored informations as exports. So this also was no main point for me.
Title: Re: List of disc catalogers

Hmmm.... merge catalogues. I'm not sure I see the point of this as with WhereIsIt? I can have as many catalogues as I like open at the same time and search across them. However, having said that, I'm far from a power user wrt disc cataloguing...

Darwin, due to this reason here (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8270.msg59226#msg59226), i am testing new programs to check out their features.. therefore i need to insert/eject the optical media.. that is what i meant in the earlier post.. :)

btw Crush, i put in some of my criteria so that we can brainstorm and identify a few major criteria.. also on the merge catalog feature, i was thinking of cdTree (http://www.vbknowledgesolutions.com/syPages/pgProducts.htm) (see pic) but since it was last updated on Dec 26, 2004, i want to be on the safe side.. :)

Otherwise there are tools like http://www.winload.de/download/56289/Internet/HTML-Editoren/CSV2HTML-0.9.7.html?empfehlung2 or http://www.hidekik.com/en/csv2html/csv2html.cgi to convert .csv-files.

Title: Re: List of disc catalogers

WhereIsIt? Is still very good and a top-notch-cataloger because of it´s features and speed. It was the reference at the start of my disc-cataloger benchmark/comparison with Heavy-Data-Tests. I haven´t tested all of them, but WhereIsIt showed some very hard issues and terminating exceptions turning my good and shiny view to a dark and bad one now. The tests showed that about 50% of the programs on the market seem to be very very buggy - and a lot of them are not worth their money (my personal opinion). I posted this somewhere on the board with the test-results. At the first sight with normal usage the most appear to work ok. Only deep tests show their flaccidities.

2 things/ideas

1) mouser has offered some webspace for html version

2) had the idea when exporting spreadsheet to .csv, instead of using commas, to use the necessary terms
( - {/table} or whatever) so that it will read as table in a post here.
will try that at weekend

See post Number 2 (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7764.msg54818#msg54818)
in this thread for a list of 213 (or is it 214  :) ) created by Crush
and facilitated by Crono's convert from spreadsheet to Forum Table batch file (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8504.msg61390#msg61390)

This is a test run
I actually think it should go in Post #1
Cause Post#1 is now a shown up as a fairly arbitrary collection/short list

I believe there is still the option to post the long list in it's own page instead of here
or simply to post it in it's own thread

Please post your opinions !!
I notice theres a few minor corrections to be made to list - will make those *shortly*  :)

Thinking of moving the comments,

The first excel-table I started before this cataloger-list was a speed comparison benchmark of some catalogers - the remarks were technical problems and software-issues (that are at the moment only german and have to be translated first). Some results of this list have been posted here: https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7183.0.
Perhaps we should also release this list if someone´s interested in benchmarking?

I'm taking a holiday I just spent the last 2 hours editing the original spreadsheet & for some reason it doesnt get converted properly anymore ...

PS Crush I think the benchmarking is maybe the most important thing ...

I also thought at the beginning that the users will be interested mostly in speed and stability - but nearly all comments to my request showed me that special features and a nice GUI are requested more often. Flexible databases and browsing functions are more preferred than highspeed searches. Therefore I asked everywhere for user experiences with catalogers on large databases. Now I dither what points are really most important for cataloger-users?!?!?

tomos, i know you are tired but i have a little suggestion to make.. :) why not incorporate the app name and its website as one column since hyper-linking them would reduce the table's width..

also, one of the programs from that list is up for grabs at Giveaway of the Day..

Advanced File Organizer
Advanced File Organizer is a cataloguer for your digital data collection.

It supports all kinds of media recognized by Windows as drives: CDs, DVDs, Memory Stick cards, ZIP disks, floppies, hard drives, network drives and folders. The key point is an ability to organize the information for most effective using it later, including convenient navigation, quick and powerful search, making reports and export to other formats.

good idea Lanux

I tidied up the URLs so on my screen I can now see these columns
Cataloger   Homepage   Free-/Shareware

Off-screen to the right are-

Price   Last Version/Change    Remark

I was combining the Remark with the Homepage colums -

I could maybe also combine Price column with Free-/Shareware

then i think all the important stuff will be visible without having to scroll to right.

Theres a difficulty with multi-line cells
and converting them to a Table but hopefully that will be sorted soon..
[I had started trying to edit the Table version but that was a nightmare so went back to spreadsheet ...)

Hi Lanux128,

Thx for the link!

AFO is a few times faster and more stable than Whereisit (V2.61 was one of the fastest in my tests and V3 seems to reach at least the same speed - some other programs got slower during further development steps).

Hurry! Get it while you can!

Thanks Lanux & Crush!

I just got it - (Advanced File Organiser (http://www.softprime.com/index.htm)) - myself

see also "15 Min Review" here from:
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ] (http://www.bladedthoth.com/reviews/15mrs/advanced-file-organizer-v3-0/)

This application is quick at loading all the information from media to the application, considering the sheer amount of information offloaded from the media to the catalog. This helps a lot for those who are willing to take the leap from another application into this one, and has hundreds (Thousands?) of CDs and DVDs and doesn’t want to spend a month re-indexing their collection. There is a lot of features to help you with your organizing as well. You can change the name of the media (As well as folders and sub-folders) to reflect what may be labeled directly on the media as opposed to the volume label (Which may be a less-than-helpful date code or similar.) You can also add a description to each media unit, as well as folders and files. The same goes for categorizing; You can organize your entire collection by category as well to aid you further in searching later.

Something I haven’t seen often in my previous searches for similar application is the ability for the application to crawl through ZIP and RAR files as if they were just another folder; Very handy indeed. This means that you don’t have to worry about ZIPping up previous versions of a project and the files not being indexed as well.

The author has included a feature to make indexing media other than CDs and DVDs useful. Rather than removing and adding an entire drive (USB, hard drive, network attached storage, rewritable CDs & DVDs, etc.) to have it re-indexed, you simply select the drive under ‘My Catalog’ and click ‘Update Disk’ button. It retains your descriptions and categories for all folders and files when you use ‘Update Disk’, which is definitely nice.

The print options are stellar as well. The number of options are pretty impressive; From full catalog printouts, to simple disc listing, and a lot in-between. This is nice to have because it is not always an option to be able to sit on the computer to go through your disc index, or you have a rough idea already what you are looking for and you just need a quick lookup.

One aspect I did find nice is the ‘Export’ functionality. You can export to HTML, Excel, XML or CSV. I’d likely use HTML and place it up on our Intranet just so others can thumb through the index as well without having to come and antagonize me to find an old file they are looking for.

Thanks Tom! I was up late last night recovering data from her computer (work related, so very important) that had accidentally been deleted. Very romantic way to spend the Sunday evening before a holiday Monday (Victoria Day here in BC)...

Anyway, took the opportunity to put AFO (http://www.softprime.com/index.htm) through its paces and was impressed. Well worth a look for anyone trying to choose a cataloguer. My usage was fairly superficial but I was impressed at how quickly it catalogued a 1.5GB on a thumbdrive and how small the resulting catalgue is (333KB - WhereIsIt? (http://www.whereisit-soft.com/) has the same thumbdrive catalogued but as part of a catalogue that includes 25GB on a 32GB USB drive - catalogue is a hair over 7MB). It doesn't *seem* as feature rich/tweakable as WhereIsIt? but as noted my usage thus far has been fairly superficial. The interface/features/options/functionality feels very similar to Broken Cross Disk Manager (http://bcdm.broken-cross.com/?Lang=enu), which I trialled before buying WhereIsIt? and quite liked.

for me AFO and WhereIsIt is running neck and neck, with unavailability of the WhereIsIt (see pic) might just tilt towards AFO.. is there a way in either of cataloguers when an IE favourite is scanned, the url is also extracted?

That shouldn't be a problem - contact them anyway and let them know that you're using the GOTD version and that you *might* be motivated to purchase a licence if x,y, and z are implemented/fixed. I suspect that the rationale most authors use in offering their apps on GOTD is to get feedback anyway, so I am sure whatever suggestions you have would be welcome. Who knows, you might even get a discount on a full licence (I know that at least one vendor that offered apps on GOTD has done this).

Good luck!

Hey! I found the most expensive File/Disc-Cataloger on the world today (not yet included in the list).

It´s Catalyzer http://www.axiope.com/userguides/desktop/importheaders.html
This is a real bargain for only (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/esmileys/gen3/1Small/SHOCKING.GIF) 9000$/8000€ (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/esmileys/gen3/1Small/BOXED.GIF) commercial licence (ok for 5 installations).
The cheaper version for non-profit-usage costs only the half of it  :D

I cannot believe that its features are as ultimate, superior & overwhelming that it is worth this much.
The screenshots in the userguides seem to me very very poor of features. I look forward to test this super-cataloger  :P !
You can also use it as a notepad.

Catalyzer seems to be a Java-Prog with web-server. I´ll take a look at it.
How could you call such a pricing? Harakiri-Marketing?

Truly a bargain at twice the price! I bet the non-profit organisations are fighting with each other to get in the queue to buy a copy. I mean, who could resist at these prices? It's more expensive than AFO or WhereIsIt?, etc. so it must be better, right?

Darwin, this is the feature that i'm looking for & i couldn't find it in both - ADO & WhereIsIt?.. when adding a CD containing Internet Explorer's favorites to the catalog, it would be nice if the urls are also extracted & saved with the catalog. i don't know if this is already available but i couldn't find it anywhere in the options.. :)

Hmm. That's an interesting point - a feature I had not considered but now that you've brought it to my attention, compelling! As it happens I have my favourites backed up onto a thumbdrive that has been indexed by both WhereIsIt? and AFO. I can confirm that neither of them stored the actual url in the index. I'll play around with the settings in both and see if I can modify this... As you've likely already done this, I'm not hopeful! I'll get back to you, likely tomorrow.

Hi again Lanux - I can't find anyting in either app that will enable the saving of url's in indexes... I'd e-mail the author of WhereIsIt? but he's not available. Let's see what the dev of AFO has to say though...

Quick Update: I e-mailed both devs. Can't tell from the response I received from WhereIsIt?'s dev whether he'll respond after the 27th or not (ie the autoresponse merely states that it's an autoresponse but doesn't say whether or not I should expect a real response in the future!). We'll see what happens.

Axiope's Catalyzer: It's not $9000  - it's FREE!

For the purposes discussed in this thread, which I understand to be creating a personal searchable catalog of what is on discs, all you need is Catalyzer Desktop, which is completely FREE (http://www.axiope.com/support_download.html).  No license required for full operation.  The only caveat is you have to use File|Import to open your catalog and File|Export to save it to your local disk (File|Open and File|Save expect you to be running Catalyzer Server which is for group cataloging and which is not free).

Catalyzer is a lot more than a disc cataloger - hence its price for the full system.  But for simple disc cataloging, I think you should be able to use the free Catalyzer Desktop.  The price is right  :)  - but we would be interested in comments on functionality, useability, etc.

Thanks for answering to this discussion! I didn´t knew wether I should post this link or not. Sorry, I didn´t read anywhere that Axiope-Desktop is licence-free so I thought you have to licence the non-profit version of it - the next time I´ll take a closer look. Nevertheless, I took a copy of it yesterday and will test it during the next weeks.

The first thing I saw was the shocking high price. I admit that on the first look at the functionality of creating catalogs, data sets and viewing masks, it´s the most flexible program I´ve seen till now. I didn´t mention at what customers you´re aiming: chemists, biologists, geneticists and other scientists that have enough money for something like Axiope.

This is a test run
I actually think it should go in Post #1
Cause Post#1 is now a shown up as a fairly arbitrary collection/short list

I believe there is still the option to post the long list in it's own page instead of here
or simply to post it in it's own thread

Please post any opinions !!

tidied the "Long" list up, and made a bunch of corrections -
it should be much more readable now

I'm looking for a disc cataloger that works on both Windows and Linux (Ubuntu).

I found some leads on Ubuntu catalogers in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=3159806&postcount=12 . One promising cross-OS cataloger mentioned there is VVV, Virtual Volumes View, http://vvvapp.sourceforge.net/ , currently at version 0.7.
[ You are not allowed to view attachments ][ You are not allowed to view attachments ]
Drawbacks: the features are still very basic. No reports, no specific file icons, no copying of file names and several other no's. But I like it so far as it currently goes. It's slim and fast and is actively developed (in comparison, some other catalogers for Ubuntu that haven't been updated for years). Does anyone know of a good cross-OS cataloger with more features than VVV?

Tomos, here are details for VVV for the big list on the first page of this thread:

I just wanted to say that I still think Whereisit is the program of choice here.  Even if you take into account freeware vs shareware programs, I still think it's more than worth it.  It has lifetime updates/upgrades and is still under active development.
Now, I haven't tried other programs lately to see if they are better, so for me to say Whereisit is the best may seem unjustified.  But the reason why I can say that is because I have no motivation to look for another program because I don't find anything lacking in WHereisit.  Furthermore, I don't even think I'm using more than 20% of the available features, so it can do even more than what I'm doing with it.  I just don't think you can go wrong with the program.

i'll chime in to say i'm quite happy with WhereIsIt but the author is quite busy i guess & thus takes some time (or none at all) to respond to feature requests (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7764.msg62571#msg62571). just my experience but that doesn't take anything away from the program itself.

Minor service release 3.91

Version 3.91 is a minor service release, improving on robustness of the internal viewer, combining all of the minor fixes and improvements in various parts of the program, and packing the latest versions of various plugins, modified in the last few weeks.

Sure. I still use Advanced Disk Catalog, since VVV still lack som basic features, like support for file type icons. But it is getting better and better. So I hope to migrate to it some time soon since it is steadily updated, open source and works in both windows and linux.

But finding some way to migrate the catalog and avoid the tedious task of manually entering all discs into VVV might prove to be a challenge.

I know the Advanced Disk Catalog hasnt been updated since 2004 & isnt available at it's website (I added a link for tucows) so that's obviously a factor...

mwb1100, yes I know that but google still ranks the old site as no 1 so that's where I ended up. After writing about this here I hope I'll never make that mistake again. We'll see how that goes in six months or so ;D

noblejoker: I think most of the programs in this giant list are focused on cataloging discs (CDs, DVDs) and folders by scanning their filesystems. It sounds like you need another type of database. Just a thought: I haven't tried the range of programs by Collectorz.com http://www.collectorz.com/music/ (commercial), but according to their site they support importing items through bar code scanning. Maybe that works for LP:s too?

I have Music Collector and, AFAICT, it does not support adding LP's via barcode. I have a box full of LPs and HAVEN'T had a chance to try entering one or more of those via barcode, but I will try to do this this afternoon and post back here with the result.

OK - finally got to my vinyl collection - couldn't find a single one with a barcode, so it appears to me to be moot point. FWIW, the last LP I bought new was a Rush album published in 1987. It doesn't have a barcode printed on it, either. I wonder if the barcodes were printed on the labels attached to the shrink wrap? I no longer remember.

Also, I know that you also have WhereIsIt?  Have you tried using that for music, DVDs, etc.?  Or is it better/more convenient to use a specialized "collector" application for those?  Plus, if you use programs like Music Collector for your media, what do you use WhereIsIt? for?  (Just curious - not trying to give you the "third degree"!!  Trying to research before I select a program for my DVD collection.  CD collection is next!!)

Oh - while I am asking, I read a lot of complaints about Collectorz.com in the Complaints forum.  Have you had issues with upgrades or anything?

Thanks!

Jim

Hi Jim,

The big complaint about Collectorz centred around their decision to switch from a lifetime licencing model to a paid upgrade model on or around November 14, 2006. The controversy arose because this decision was taken and implemented without any warning to existing or new users and wasn't accompanied by any significant changes to their websites, so that there remained many references to lifetime licencing. This led to many people to continue to buy licences for various of their products on the assumption that they were purchasing lifetime upgrades when in fact they were only buying point release updates. Anyway, they quietly "settled" with a number of malcontents, myself included, and also quietly removed the references to lifetime licencing from their website. That storm in a teapot seems to have blown over. My main beef is that a number of their applications have had no updates/upgrades whatsoever in over a year. However, when updates/upgrades are released they are very prompt in issuing a new serial number to unlock it, so no complaints on that front. Also note that the applications work very well, whether updated recently or not. There is only one outstanding issue with one application that I feel is long overdue for a fix (folder view in Photo Collector), but it's not a deal breaker...

I purchased Where Is It to catalogue my data CD's, DVD's, and external harddrives and it is excellent for this purpose. Because I already owned four of the dedicated Collectorz cataloguers (Book, mp3, Music, and Photo) I haven't felt the need to try Where Is It for these types of files.

Don't worry about giving me the third degree - I'm working on my third degree! Punny, but I simply could not resist  :D

Hope this rambling missive helps...

What I'd like to know is how many of these programs just catalogue the file and folder details ONLY and NOT the contents themselves? My own program, TypeStats, catalogues media and shows statistics of the files and folders, but no-one apparently has been interested, so I took it down.  :(

Unfortunately, despite my best efforts to get people to look at the program, they were far more interested in the shortcomings of the website I had for it.  >:(

welcome aboard, AMJFisher! :) do tell us more about your program - maybe some screenshots, a brief description, license type, etc. as you can see from here (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=7764.msg54818#msg54818), we've not settled on a single cataloguer as the best.

furthermore if you don't mind giving a download link, i'm sure that a lot of us here would like to give your app a try.

Well, the program I think is available from http://www.winsite.com - just type in the name "typestats" and select the more recent version, which is more-or-less the final version. I may upload the final version itself one day.

But the thing is, TypeStats doesn't have the bells and whistles of the other cataloguers, like thumbnail processing and all that, mainly because it is first and foremost more like a different version of Windows Explorer, and shows a lot more info and statistics about the files and folders on your drives. That it can also catalogue stuff is a bit of a bonus.

Hi, I also found some new entries. I´ll post them after I collected enough to make an update. Some programs are really hard to get. Currently I´m searching Fuzzionmanager1310 - it doesn´t seem to be available anywhere. I have Typestats now but it´s impossible to install on a vista computer or the installer isnt clean.

Crush:

Just wondering if in your exploration of disc cataloguers you had found any that have the one feature I really want.

Let's say I have cataloged 20 DVD's with 50 files on each.  What I would like to be able to do is open up a single window that shows all 1000 files in a scrollable list, with one of the columns in that list being the ID number I assigned to the DVD containing that particular file.

Every cataloger I have tried so far is "disk centric" rather than "total database centric" - i.e. it will only let me browse one cataloged disk at a time.

Thanks.....

Hmmm, you´ve really tried several catalogers? A lot of them support your feature. Try Lazycat (it´s in the list).
Title: Re: List of disc catalogers
Post by: Lolipop Jones on April 29, 2008, 10:17 AM
I have four of them installed in a virtual machine which is open on my screen right now.

WhereIsIt
Disk Explorer Professional
Disclib
Virtual Cat

I don't see a way to get any of them to open a window that browses the whole database.  I can run a report query that lists all files in the database which meet selected criteria, but that's not exactly the same thing as browsing all records across all archived volumes.

I'd really like to be able to do this with WhereIsIt because I like the program in many ways, but from an inspection of the author's website, it appears that the only question he really wants to answer is "how do I pay for the program?".  No contact e-mail other than for bug reports and payment issues, no user forum and a very abbreviated FAQ.

I tried all the links for LazyCat in your list, only one linked to a download (Lazy1_1a.zip) which shows up on my system as a corrupted file on each of three separate different DL attempts.

thanks....

Even the last normal site update was deleted from Archive.org and the last change date of the beta version was 15.9.2001. This is a timespan of  over 6 years. This is shareware, so why we shouldn´t host it as the last resort before a really great program dies? Don´t use V1.1a - it´s too buggy. The only thing I found is a mirror of the last site: http://members.home.nl/drpsycho/

Tomos, related only as registered user. As for viruses I think that was false alarm, I use NOD32 antivirus and it remains silent…
As for this program – I switched to it from WhereIsIt. At that time WII has problems with Unicode and I have many MP3 with Unicode names and tags (Cyrillic and hieroglyph symbols). As it allow only 4GB of catalog data for test (in age of DVDs?) I don’t noticed that problem and buy it as WII have many powerful features (but so ugly and complicated interface…). Then I found CDC, tested it and bought it :-) They constantly release new version and become better and better (and may be complicated too… illness of all big soft).
P.S. There are very communicative support, I send them several bugs and suggestions and they FIXED it. Also little tip if someone will decide to buy it. I am negotiated a 40% discount $-)

J-Mac, you right. When I switched, I has something about 100 DVD and it is takes significant time to rescan it. Now I have more than 1000 DVD's and 3TB on HDD's and will not rescan it even if I will find better cataloguer.  8)

But there are always new users who seek such software - for them I recommend to try CDC.

Crush has posted an .exe of his Disc-Cataloger

Only to show I´m still working sometimes on my Disc-Cataloger (it´s not dead!) I decided to prove its incredible speed (I used it as base calculation in former benchmarks at the beginning of this thread) with an old tester. This should be a little bit faster than the version I used for the posted benches, but my newest routine is even faster. ;)
........

My goal is something in the style of Lazycat, Locate32 or Everywhere but with different new features and an unbeatable search speed.

I only want to mention that I sent an updated version of the disc-cataloger-list 4 months ago to tomos - he know´s the right way to update the list here. In the meanwhile I´ve updated it again. Some of the old entries have been updated and there are new entries... it´s still growing. I also sent a benchmark-list to him for a release (comparison of the searching speeds of different programs and different versions of some programs - some are getting slower and slower like WhereIsIt?).

BTW, I thought I'd mention that I am also using WhereIsIt? - or actually I am severely underusing it! I've created a catalog of each of my HDD's and - well, that's about it. I update them regularly and save them. Duh! Other than that I don't have any idea what to do with this software. I ended up getting Collectorz.com apps for my DVDs, CDs, and Books, and SoftCAT for my software inventory. So that leaves WhereIsIt? as the perennial bridesmaid, but never a bride. Documentation is disappointingly thin and the application itself is somewhat less than intuitive.

If anyone has any tips on decent uses for WhereIsIt? I'd love to hear them. Otherwise it's getting booted.

Thanks!

I guess - but doesn't Locate32 and/or Everything search those just as fast, if not faster? Or does WhereIsIt? also index the contents? If so, then there's a feature I was not aware of.

Thanks!

The main value of WhereIsIt?, in my opinion, is that it saves a list of all of the contents of you media in one searchable location. So, you don't have to have the CD/DVD in a drive to review its contents - indeed, you can have 200 CD's and DVD's indexed and available fron one file. It's always worked flawlessly for me in this capacity.

Yeah, sorry - I wasn't clear: I did actually mean data cds and dvds. That is, the contenst of them  :)

oh to be the contestest of the DVD's (with apologies to all :D

I'll excuse this post by saying - look at the next one...

I meant to do that... that's obviously why I put a smiley face at the end of it. No other explanation worth looking at, is there? Well, IS there? No. I thought not. Moving along...

OK - No, I don't have any data CD/DVD's in the Collectorz.com software. Then again, other than CD's with software installation files I don't really have many. I stopped backing up to DVD's when my data files became too large to fit on them. I use external drives instead.

Like I said, I do use it to keep all my HDD's catalogged and I update those weekly. But as I said also, I can't help but to feel like I am so underusing the application. It appears - at least from the documentation that does come with it - that it is mostly designed to catalog media disks.

Thank you.

Jim

Yeah, your experience is similar to mine, Jim - I back up everything to external HDs now: OS and software instals to disc images and documents and software installers to folders. However, I *did* backup everything to CD-R for about 10 years, so have about 300 discs lying around. I was never able to cram all the contents onto the disc label with a Sharpie, so bought WhereIsIt? to catalogue what I had and where.

Okay, just to confirm I've finalised the updating of the list combining a list from Crush (2009-02-14) with the current list (which was also based on an older list from Crush)

added a few more new ones and updated a few more old ones ;)
I made some big mistakes along the way so if you see any wrong urls please let me know!

Just for the heck of it I catalogged my CD's with WhereIsIt?. I already have them in Music Collector but I wanted to see WhereIsIt do something other than just catalog my HDD's (Boring!). It did a nice job with my CD's. No cover art or anything; just the contents, which is all you really need.

[WinCatalog 2009] Will be soon (March 16th) on BdJ http://www.bitsdujour.com/software/wincatalog-2008/ with 50% discount.  Seems a rather nice tool to me, I personnaly rely on the free lite version - for the moment.

EDIT/
it's actually 60% off :)

WinCatalog™ Light and Standard Comparison Table (http://www.wincatalog.com/features.html)

I have WinCatalog 2008 from a previous bits offer (which I've never installed :-[)
they dont have any upgrade info at their site  so I mailed them

EDIT#2/
I got a very prompt, polite, and helpful mail from them telling me that there's no upgrade price
I'm one happy customer (better go install it next lol)
AND just added app name :-[ it didnt really show in original quote above

Camel Disc Catalog v.2.2.2 released today.

Full changelog: http://www.cameldisc.com/history.html

For me best new feature is several images per file support. So I can assign poster and several screenshots for every film in collection. They also added rescan option and video file preview, so it become useful not only for CD\DVD but also for HDD cataloging.

CD Bank Cataloguer
http://www.qunomsoft.com/
there is development in alpha stage that can be downloaded

corrected website address
anyone using this one?

i won this program in a DC giveaway but for a long time it seemed that the software had become abandonware so i had to switch to another cataloguer. more details here: CD Bank Cataloguer abandoned? (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=8270.0)

thats just sad:(

i guess the question is whether any of these other catalog programs can import the cdbank database.  and how open are the other programs database/export/import functions.  it would suck to be locked into another programs database when that software becomes abandonware as well.  sometimes even open source is abandoned.  perhaps thats an issue with this area of software, no standard format for a database.

CDC uses SQLite database format. It also has internal import format based on JSON, but as I know there are no converter from CD Bank...
