(1)
- sort clips on date, newest at the top
- select the top.. two clips (i.e. the latest ones)
- click on merge
- ctrl-a  - ctrl-c
- click on cancel
with me, the pointer jumps to the oldest clip.

(2)  almost the same as above:
- sort clips on date, newest at the top
- select the top.. two clips (i.e. the latest ones)
- click on merge
- click on OK
- select merged clip
- delete merged clip
with me, the pointer jumps to the oldest clip.

Also see: "CHS at first launch always starts up selecting the last but one oldest"

You are right about the bug -- it's just jumping to the END of the list, and so when you have it sorted with new on top you are seeing this behavior. I will try to fix this.
