New CPanel alias discussion and suggestions
« on: September 21, 2012, 09:25 PM »
To all that are interested in the new CPanel alias mentioned here, please post any comments or suggestions to this thread. If you find any missing applets (not vendor specific such as NVidia or AMD, or ones that come with a utility such as sisoft sandra or everest), please post them here and what OS you are running.

On the note, if you have a separate vendor-specific control panel applet, please pass the .cpl or namespace and GUID for it, and I will create a separate, optional, alias file for the vendor-specific entries.

Brief testing under Windows 7 Pro 64-bit with FARR 2.107.01 (tried running as admin as well as non-admin):

Dialog displays for (works as expected?):

  System
  Display

Nothing seems to happen:

  Mouse
  Keyboard

Error dialog (sorry non-English text which I didn't manage to parse):

  Fonts
  Speech

With 2.107.02 seems much better -- though the dialogs that came up before were different...

After typing cpanel, it seems to take a while for the control panel items to show up here -- if I didn't know to wait I might wonder whether it was working correctly :)  With 2.107.02 seems much faster

Side note: didn't see mention of this thread in the beta thread -- if it hasn't been mentioned there, may be it would make sense to?

What is different about cpanel? Mine's altered, so maybe that is why I am not seeing any changes. Does it still pull from %FARRDIR%\scripts?

NO.

in fact you better back up yours if you've someone changed it, becase the new farr installer will remove the old FARRDIR\Scripts\cpanel when run.

All,

Here is a list of msc files I am going to add for MSC files. This will fall under the admin alias:

azman.mscAuthentication Manager
certmgr.mscCertificate Manager
comexp.mscComponent Services (COM+) Administration
compmgmt.mscComputer Management
devmgmt.mscDevice Manager
diskmgmt.mscDisk Management
eventvwr.mscEvent Viewer
fsmgmt.mscShared Folders Management
gpedit.mscGroup Policy Editor
lusrmgr.mscLocal Users and Groups
NAPCLCFG.mscNetwork Access Protocol Client Configuration
perfmon.mscPerformance Monitor
printmanagement.mscPrint Management
rsop.mscResultant Set Of Policy
SecPol.mscSecurity Policy Editor (A subset of Group Policy)
Services.mscServices manager
TaskSchd.mscTask Scheduler
tpm.mscTrusted Platform Module
WF.mscWindows Firewall with Advanced Security
WMImgmt.mscWindows Management Instrumentation Control

Once this is complete, I will create an adcpl alias for active directory tools. This will include things like DHCP, DNS, RRAS, Active Directory Users and Computers, Sites and Services, Domains and Trusts, etc.

Please let me know what you think of the current or planned aliases! Thanks!
Josh

Josh's new alias was added in 2.107.02, so I guess what you are saying is that Josh's new cpanel alias is a big improvement over the old cpanel shotcuts that FARR used to use.

A basic question from someone who's been depending on FARR for many years, but hasn't really followed its enhancements for most of that time: With this latest update, how do I get a CPanel applet to appear in history? Before this update, this "just worked"; now CPanel itself appears in history, but not the applets. Also, manually adjusting the applet scores does not affect their scores in the search window. Thanks!

Alias results don't currently show in launch history; the reason they showed in previous version and not now is that they used to be handled by shortcut files in a special directory and now they're handled by an alias.

The request that alias results be added to launch history is not a new one.. I think I will be adding it soon.
