When I change between different screenshots to the left, I get a standard Windows beep ("C:\Windows\Media\Windows Ding.wav") every time. Even if I click on the image that is currently shown, I get the beep. This is rather annoying, as the beep is normally used for getting the user's attention, but there is no reason for it when I just click on an image...

Could this be fixed? :)

I was using v2.89.01.
The problem is also there in the version you gave a link to.
The problem has been there for quite some time, at least 6 months I think.
It has not always been there.

When I right click a file or folder to the left, the beep also comes, before the context menu appears.
It doesn't matter what folder is displayed.

The beep does not come when I switch to Detailed view and click on files and folders. But in all the other three views (Thumbnails, Large icons, List) the sound is there when I click on files and folders.

In Detailed view, though, when I use the arrow keys to select the next or previous file or folder, the sound is there!

Wierd, huh?

(I can see that this topic is about the same problem - no solution there either, though.)

tanis424 has mentioned the same problem:

One small thing I'd love to have changed is the "ding" sound played whenever I select a thumbnail in the Screenshot Panel. I cannot find an option for this, it appears to be using the Windows Default Beep sound. A small thing, sure, but an annoying one. :)

Same except I also get beep in detailed view, with both mouse and key clicks.

If you exit SC and restart it, does the beep on select start happening right away when you start selecting files?  or does it only start happening once youve been using the program for a while?

If you look at the statubar on screenshot captor, do you see any text there that seems unusual when you select a file?

This fixed it for me http://channel9.msdn...56901-Stop-the-Ding/

I checked in Process Monitor and ccselect is called, then half the hd including a usb stick! is searched for that file. Seems like 30-40 random folders. Ends up in Windows folders with a successful DING.WAV ,stupid.

Notice file name of wanted wav file, weird.

That article is a really nice find Bamse, it seems to suggest that the beep has to do with a general windows setting in any file explorer.

You guys suffering from it could confirm that it's not screenshot captor specific by opening up windows explorer and selecting items through it.

However i don't understand the screenshot Bamse posted or what you are saying about what you were searching for, etc.  Could you explain?

Look at the file name. Is that normal?

Turning "Select" off in control panel for sounds make SC, or Vista, use Ding.wav - after search of that weird file name. Using the reg-file make it go silent. CCselect is referenced but nothing happens because it is set to nothing. Going back in to control panel, selecting any random file for select will work BUT when choosing nothing SC once again reverts to Ding.wav - must run reg file again.

An interesting comment in that thread is:
That's actually a bug in the v5 common controls.  If your app is manifested to use the v6 common controls it won't happen.

So i might be able to fix it by adding details to manifest of screenshot captor.

Here is a snippet from Process Monitor. Action from the moment I click.

I did not read comments but went straight to regedit  :P

What process is searching for that file?  I am totally confused.  Is this happening because your Windows System sounds configuration is messed up specifying to use a sound file that doesn't exist, leading windows itself to try to conduct a search for a missing sound file?  Or is something else happening?

And I still don't understand if we're saying that the fix to this problem is to fix a bad configuration in your System Windows Sounds, or if we're saying there it something that Screenshot Captor is doing that is causing windows to get confused about what sound to play, etc.

Screenshot Captor is or at least it request that file. PID 8964 is SC. After I run that regfile crazy file name is not there. If I go in to sound panel and mess with Select entry, disable/enable 10 times - ending with not attaching any wav problem returns and reg-file must be run again.

For the rest of your questions I am ??? But I rarely touch sound panel, have no programs messing with it either. So weird. I would like to see other victims run Process Monitor when clicking.

I have only found the problem in ScreenshotCaptor. There is no similar beep in Windows Explorer or any other program I use.

Also same here. When I first ran in to the problem I tried all sorts of changes, for mouse/keyb, changes in ease of access center, even folder settings. Nothing helped. I was about to say I have 102 processes running right now so don't mind a strange filename but remembered I have done no-nonsense/only SC running basic troubleshooting before.

Could it be a language/regional issue? I also tried changing keyb. to other lingo I think. I just noticed that Jesper Hertel seem to be Danish so we have language settings in common.

Thank God and Jesper for that pic  :D

Ok for the fun of it let's try a version of Screenshot Captor with an embedded manifest (hopefully if i did it right) that tells it to use version 6 of the microsoft common controls, as suggested in that article:

https://www.donation...nshotCaptorSetup.exe

ps. for those of you who recently downloaded from the beta link, please carefully watch when the installer runs and make sure it says in the first page of the installer that it is installing v2.90.01 -- otherwise you have cached version of the download.

let me know if that miraculously solves the beep.

It seems very clear that the article Bamse found is the root explanation for the beep.

I see more discussions of this problem all over:
http://www.eggheadca...ew-beep-problem.aspx

And official MS bulletin about it:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/944150

Furthermore it seems to affect Vista only (or primarily), and all the sufferers on this thread are using Vista.  So this is definitely the problem.

Now I won't comment on the wisdom of sticking with Vista except to say that everyone seems to agree Windows 7 is a huge improvement.

It should be possible for me to fix Screenshot Captor to avoid this Vista "bug" -- if the manifest trick doesnt work i will try something else.

By the way:

For those suffering from this bug -- please don't fix it using the techniques in those articles (yet).

Leave your system as it is so you can help me make sure I fix Screenshot Captor to avoid the bug.

After that you may want to do the fixes or at least bookmark the articles in case you come across another application that suffers from the same problem.

Quiet here :) Clean Process Monitor, no Ding.wav

I did use 7 Ultimate for 4 months but downgraded to Vista  :P I will not pay for 7 but also not use illegal Windows for an extended period. Not outside Virtualboxes that is.

Yay  :beerchug:

Thanks everyone for discovering and posting about the bug and for not getting so frustrated that you gave up on SC.

And special thanks Bamse for discovering the cause of the bug.

ps. I actually used to embed this manifest in Screenshot Captor for quite some time -- it has the extra benefit of letting windows Vista/7 theme the controls so it looks more native.  I must have stopped embedding the manifest some time ago though, probably when the location of visual studio resource compiler changed on my system...

and others
Well, it seems like there were no others :)

Same here, I will not pay for Windows 7, and I am also not so sure my hardware will work under Windows 7. After much tweaking and a memory upgrade my Vista has finally calmed down (no more trashing the disk) and it works smoothly now. :)

Thanks everyone for discovering and posting about the bug and for not getting so frustrated that you gave up on SC.
Give up on SC???? That is completely unimaginable to me! The program is so extremely cool! :eusa_dance:
