Java (which I enabled for this without restarting my browser, then disabled again when I was done)

do you really want to rely on a browser that can't identify the most common of plugins?

But quite fitting, since the second half is contradictory it makes the first half valid

And they misspelled Excruciating...

FTR:
His Royalness edvard the Illuminated: Acned Nawab of the island of Wak-wak

My own Island?
Awesome!

* Edvard searches Google maps for Wak-wak

Ok ok ok sorry to the various complainants, especially App103 who of course immediately detected the inherent sexism that is rife amongst All Powerful Rules of Imaginary Places.

This is a small Java Applet which exemplifies a few useful basics: text input, button events, using the Graphics2D class and font metrics.

Thanks for giving it a go - you made a nephew of mine very happy!

Professor wraith808 Pointless: Obscene Knave of Tinkling-on-the-Water

Pretty cool that he's into programming.

He's already into Java, so this recommendation is probably Pointless (

) but there's a really good book I purchased for my son to get started (and his uncle used it too!)

Hello World!
Computer Programming for Kids and Other Beginners

They have pretty good sales on Manning from time to time; I believe I purchased the book and the pdf for $15.00 around Christmas.

Your nephew should be very proud of himself. He had me fooled. I thought this was something fun & silly that you did!

_{(yes, I have been known to make silly stuff to practice new skills, too...Mad Libs, Goodbye Canada, etc.)}

Good one - I'll grab that thing. There's a big element of running before walking when it comes to computering these days IMHO. Would be a great idea to cover some more basics.

Am I getting some sort of reputation?

Ok, I may have suggested some of the titles and so forth. Anyone who reads CT will probably realise I love bad puns and silly name.

The ineffable Stoic Joker the Categorical: Capricious Bitch-Queen of the Archane Wilderness

...Thanks a lot April.

It's a cute enough thingy, timns - make him add some control that can do selectable text as the next step, should be easy enough

Stoic Joker: now that's a damn nifty title! I love the word 'ineffable' - it's right up there with 'exhume' in my list of nifty++ english words.

timns · « **Reply #18 on:** February 10, 2011, 06:05 PM »

I have no problem with ineffable, as I have frequently left people searching for words in an attempt to describe my antics. Having a rather dry whit, I can even deal with the concept of being a capricious stoic... I'm at an age where many of my memories are (at least becoming) archane...and I like the wilderness. But, Bitch-Queen?!? That's a hell of a thing to hang on a guy....

timns · « **Reply #20 on:** February 10, 2011, 08:26 PM »

Mr Joker, if it makes you feel any better:

I just got clobbered with

Baron Timbo the Varicose: Toothless Ambassador of the Tufty Cleft

... wondering if there's some string checking in there for my name...

f0dder · « **Reply #21 on:** February 10, 2011, 08:28 PM »

Heh, just tried another one - probably not too far off the mark:
His Majesty, f0dder the Kobold: Intoxicated Hugeness of the Chubby Thigh!

Stoic Joker · « **Reply #22 on:** February 10, 2011, 09:45 PM »

So... I worked up the courage to try it again (foolish, i know...):

Baron Stoic Joker the Xanthocronic: Malign Cephlopod of the uphill Gardeners

So... do I go with the one I can't pronounce, or should I just stick with Bitch-Queen?!?

timns · « **Reply #23 on:** February 10, 2011, 10:27 PM »

OMG I would definitely remain as a bitch-queen if I were you...

In the meantime I'll give a certain family member a stern stare over the webcam.

Stoic Joker · « **Reply #24 on:** February 11, 2011, 12:11 AM »

Alright damnit, I'm calling in an official bugg report...

Sir Stoic Joker the Lambent: Jaunty Princess of Bell End

Sir Princess?!?

...Now how the hell am I supposed to muster a stern stare if I can't stop laughing???
