Can someone help me restore my sound?
« on: August 28, 2008, 09:10 PM »
It's not really software I'm after, here, more like a fix or...I don't know!
At the beginning of this month I lost internet sound, only.
I have a VAIO VGN-CR290.
Tried un/re installing flash, no help.
Sony, no help.
Microsoft knowlege base, no help.
Some regedit entry I don't remember, also of no use.

GRRRR!

Somebody please help me if you can, I can't afford to break *yet another* computer.

Thanks!

(I forgot to say that my Realtek drivers appear to be up-to-date & that yes, I've checked my volume settings on the VAIO, windows, & whatever I'm trying to hear something on like u-tube, etc. If I put my ear to either speaker and all volumes are on full blast, I can hear a teeny tiny bit, nothing more.)

Internet sound, only ??!!   :o
So a CD/DVD/MP3-whatever local file is played back in the normal way?

Indeed an interesting problem! Of course more annoying to you, than interesting, though....

Please start out by installing another internet browser, just to check who is causing the error.

did you (or maybe Sony prompted you to) update anything before this loss of sound? if you did, then check out the website below and try to restore the updated components. especially the Sony shared library. :)

I did. FF says I need to install flash, IE is fine, plays whatever I want, just no sound.
Now, my volume control on the taskbar is gone, & when I go to put it back, the checkbox is unchecked and disabled, as well.

AVG says no virus, also.

Thank you for the link. However, when selecting my OS, Vista Home Premuimm the following is displayed:

"There are no original drivers currently posted."

I updated my video chat service and later that day I lost sound.
But the service support was of no help, so I uninstalled their program.
That was useless, the problem stayed.

The Sony e-Support web site directed me to a file that would not download correctly, (xyz.exe not a valid windows file) & upon contacting them they said that meant I had a virus.
Ran AVG & came up clean & went back to the site & just guessing, right clicked on the file and used, "Save Target As" &  it worked fine. It just didn't resove anything.
I was under the impression that Sony & MS had more of a say as to what drivers my pc would use...aaagghh!...it's hard to explain...I didn't think my video chat software could take over my entire computer!

I guess I'll just call Sony, then post the rest of this awful mess in Company Complaints.

Thank you everyone for your help!

If it was me, my next move would be to re-install the last known stable version  of the "video chat software" (what name is it?).

Forget it! :D  :D  :D
The software is oovoo, and they've yet to respond to this morning's plea for help.
Not the first request, but I have a feeling it was an automated response today, this was rather frustrating.
My boyfriend found something today on a French computing forum.
He told me to uninstall my realtek sound card & restart the computer...
...and...
IT WORKED!
(He'll definately get some credits, but of a different nature, I'm sure)

YIPEEEE!
Thanks again for all who responded!

have you tried system restore to before that install - has saved me on occasion, not dependable but worth a try
or do you have any other backups/images of system files/registry

scratch that :)

That's correct.
When I restarted, it automatically re-installed itself.
