The MAIN reason EVERYONE should use EverNote!*
« on: December 13, 2007, 05:32 AM »
I am at roughly the half-century mark and I will remember the most important things (I write a lot) for just long enough to get them down in a most spartan-like condition.  Twice I have had BSODs during some very critical apologetic writing and not even the autosave was able to rebuild Humpty-Dumpty again.  I was able to jot down the subject and where I wanted to go, but electrons are now the keeper of "how" I wanted to express and I have never been able to recall those sentences.

Enter "Evernote"

For me the most important feature (documented or not) is the ability to somehow save every keystroke.  When the keyup event is triggered, it is on my doc!  I have tested this in numerous ways and in every test Evernote still had it on the screen when Windows and came back up and I executed Evernote.

If you write and NEVER want to risk losing any pearls of wisdom, then Evernote is here to help.

FYI - The above is my own experience.  I am not spamming nor am I receiving any compensation.  I am offering a friendly tip.

You make EverNote sound like a keylogger.  That isn't what you meant, is it?

No I think he means that EN is handy to compose in and then copy to the app.

Does EN save data to its library after every single keypress - seems a bit wasteful ...

having a look there -
it does seem to save each time I make a change

dont know if it's wasteful - it's quick, responsive, uses cpu & memory but nothing out of order here at any rate

Do you really see that many BSOD that it is a concern? I haven't had but maybe two in the past three or four years. BSODs on WinXP should be a /very/ rare occurrence these days and should only result when you update or install a device driver.

Not to mention that if EverNote saves changes so often that "a BSOD shouldn't be an issue", it's going to do a lot of disk writes... what if a BSOD happens as the database/whatever is being saved? Sure hope it does atomic file saving :)

Unfortunately, I am having a rash of them.  I have had two in the last week and the fact that twice I had lost a salient point in my writing was enough to send me hunting.  That is how I discovered Evernote.  I tested each of what I could find out there, but only Evernote could show me it saved everything.  Even the two that recently occurred only proved to be an inconvenience.  Once back up and running I just kept on where I left off.

I tried using Slickrun, which is actually a program launcher like FARR. But when I press Win + J it gives a scratch pad called Jot which saves to the hard disk automatically after each key stroke. Not as full featured as evernote, but okay for quick and dirty work.

CodeTrucker - I tested this only in so far as I opened up both OneNote and SQLNotes and typed in single letters (actually I hit return twice and typed in the letter a) and then shut down the programme without saving anything. When I fired them back up the changes I had made were still there.

I'll take one for the team though (Gulp!) and try hitting the juice button in the middle of typing in both  :o

DONT DO IT!!!
-
use xyplorer: open to where the file is being saved,
doodle a bit  :)
check has file been updated/saved in XY -
you have to hit F5 to refresh but default shows seconds in saved time so should be easy to check

EDIT: just to be clear:- check has file/database been updated before closing programme down

Too late, Tom! The first test was SQLNotes and was negative (ie none of the edits were there when I started my computer up and opened SQLNotes). The second test with OneNote was positive but fraught with danger! chkdsk popped up on system start and went nuts deleting files and moving things around. When the dust settled explorer.exe crashed soon after my desktop started loading and I had to kill it when it restarted because it hung, freezing my system... The "good news" is that OneNote DID save all of my edits.

In both cases I was typing as I hit the power button on my computer.

f0dder - I don't know what an "atomic save" is, but I have had my kids pull the power on the PC randomly in testing EN as I was typing and somehow everything I had typed up to the shutoff was held in integrity, so some kind of "save" was afoot.

Even if there are no crashes on your end, has anyone ever lost a post because the server was reset (or any other reason) where you lost a post?  Again I'm not trying to spam EN on anyone, but I have also never experienced anything negative in using EN.  I was just hoping to help others avoid the hair-pulling frustration of the darker side of computing and be more productive.  :)

"Atomic save" means you don't touch/modify/fsckup the original file until you're 100% sure you can't fail (and thus corrupt data). Usually it's done by saving to a tepmfile, and when that's successful (and disk buffers are flushed), you delete the original and rename the tempfile (yes, I still need to implement this myself in fSekrit, I'm such a lousy person).

And yes, I've had a browser crash/timeout/whatever, which is why I compose longer forum posts in Notepad++ (until I pull myself together and find a decent bbcode editor), along with the It's All Text! addon :)

Do people backup their evernote databases?  I setup a ftp on a remote computer and drop it there once a day.

Like everything else, evernote's database must be backed up... Once or twice a day  here too.

SQLNotes saves on each field change. This was fine for the outlining grid. For the HTML editing pane, it isn't sufficient, because users can spend hours entering stuff. A time-base save will be added for the HTML pane.

Yes... admittedly I understood less how SQLNotes works when I did my little experiment than I do now (NOTE: I am not offering to repeat the experiment!).
