Title: good Videos [short films] here :)
Post by: tomos on March 03, 2010, 03:39 PM
Couldnt find a thread on this topic - post your good short films/videos here! :)

Edvard posted lately about The Third & The Seventh - Beautiful CG short film (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=21444.0)

This one below is very worth a look IMO - very different to the above (yet reminds me of it) - about using an old style printing-(letter)-press

A short film that I like is "Wath Alice Bleed".

FAIR WARNING ~ Graphic and disturbing...

Don't watch if spiders give you the squicks easily.
Otherwise, it's beautifully rendered and the concept is compelling... if a bit creepy.
A moth being caught in a spiders web. Struggling for an escape, the moths panic movements only result in less chance of survival. What follows is the type of causality everyones expecting. The spider appears, claims its prey and feeds on it. The way nature works. But it’s the point of view that creates an intense relationship between the hunter and its victim. There is much more to explore, much more to feel if one takes the time to really experience the content of a split second.

Wow! That was captivating... excellent audio too!

Anyone who enjoys dark anim must watch Coraline (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327597/).

Yes, Coraline was great.
...And if you want dark, go with this:

The Backwater Gospel
Bachelor film project 2011 from The Animation Workshop.

As long as anyone can remember, the coming of The Undertaker has meant the coming of death. Until one day the grim promise fails and tension builds as the God fearing townsfolk of Backwater wait for someone to die

Love the style...

Ben Craig is now being pursued by some major studios (http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/blogs/heat-vision/meet-years-hot-short-modern-69971), let's see what happens...

Here's a short mockumentary film called "Political Earth". It's guaranteed to offend everyone on the left, everyone on the right, everyone in the center, and pretty much anyone that likes any kind of politics. In other words, IT'S AWESOME FUNNY AS HELL~! :D (Kind of reminds me of South Park.) It's pretty much non-stop mockery and very fast paced.

10,000 Year Clock:
" ... There is a Clock ringing deep inside a mountain. It is a huge Clock, hundreds of feet tall, designed to tick for 10,000 years. Every once in a while the bells of this buried Clock play a melody. Each time the chimes ring, it’s a melody the Clock has never played before. The Clock’s chimes have been programmed to not repeat themselves for 10,000 years. Most times the Clock rings when a visitor has wound it, but the Clock hoards energy from a different source and occasionally it will ring itself when no one is around to hear it. It’s anyone’s guess how many beautiful songs will never be heard over the Clock’s 10 millennial lifespan ...":

The Final Moments of Karl Brant:

Wonderful cinematograhy and nicely understated special effects.  Stunning performances by Paul Reubens and Fay Masterson.  The other actors could have done just a wee bit better, the ending kinda unravels a little and wanders into predictable/cliche territory if you stay through the credits (wait for it... wait for it...) but otherwise the best short I've seen in a while.

The cows on a rotating "platter", that was something I didn't see before. Just static installations for the same purpose. In the Netherlands, you don't have many small farmers anymore...not in the south where I grew up.

My neighbor at the time showed me sometimes the work he did on farms that were really big and automated when I was studying electrical engineering.

The animals will get their revenge when the same happens to humans (soylent green (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0070723)...)

Well they ... uh.. *said* it was filled with actors! I think there's a good chance that they ran the "prank" for like 2-3 customers at a time, then "closed for lunch" and reset it all.

Right, but the question was whether or not the "customers" were also actors who were in on it.

It's been mentioned previously (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=21962.msg347091#msg347091) in this thread. But I didn't get around to watching it until last night. It's called Changing Batteries, and it's easily the saddest little animation I've ever seen - even if many here will see the ending coming like I did.

Anybody who works as a caregiver, or is responsible for an elderly parent, will find this little tale especially poignant. :(

One of the main things that I find useful about this discussion thread is that someone has taken the trouble to watch a video clip/short film and, finding it worthwhile for whatever reason, posts it here - thereby doing me a favour. In the main, the vids posted tend to be pretty good. I would probably rarely watch such vids otherwise, as I despair of having to wade through the usual mass of mediocrity to find the odd one worth watching. For the same reason, I rarely watch TV.

To try to return the favour: I stumbled upon a no-strings-attached "video channel aggregator" the other day and, out of interest, stayed up late for a while, watching its short films channel - 5by.com (http://5by.com).
It's not too bad, and included the video "Ruin" that @panzer linked to in a superb list that he provided -  here (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=21962.msg332804#msg332804).

Bumblebee in spider's web rescued by other bumblebee:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zs_3FHh3z4o

That's not what it looks like.

In the video, the first bee is struggling to escape from a spider’s web on a windowsill. Clearly, the bee has become trapped indoors and while bashing into the windowpane in trying to escape has become entangled in the spider’s web. The spider is nervously edging closer, but this is a big and energetic bee, prey that looks far too big for it.

Dramatically, a second bee that must also have got trapped in the house then comes crashing in, falls on its back and thrashes around a bit. As the second bee flails around on its back, it looks in one frame as if it stings the spider.

In fact, what one can see is the rear leg of the bee which happens to line up with the tip of the abdomen for a moment. It is too long and thick for a bee sting. The spider runs away, and the bees break free (as bumblebees usually do from spider’s webs).

So, sorry, this is not a noble, brave act, much as I might like it to be. This is just two clumsy bees trying to find their way home.

@panzer: Thanks for those links!
I found IDIOTS (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NCwBkNgPZFQ) to be quite a good satirical social commentary. It captured almost exactly my thoughts on the matter - for years I have found such idiocy incomprehensible, but am usually too polite to make comment about it. I had wondered whether others saw it also.
As for Father And Daughter - 2000 Academy Award for Animated Short Film (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pePhP-qRzSc), it was a very good find, I thought. I found it gently, hauntingly, heartbreakingly beautiful - but that's just my perception. Others may perceive something different from it.

Then I became "hooked" as I followed some other interesting videos/films linked/related on the YouTube page, and watched those also:

Now I really must get on with something more useful...

Interesting.

good find Panzer
there's a two hour version (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=814eR5K7KD8) (but I might save up that till I'm doing some mindless work).
A problem for me, and probably many others, is that the 'nothing box' has been replaced with the internet, which is about the opposite of nothing.

Re the 'fixing things' approach (when someone tells you their troubles), that's not just a men thing - a lot of women do that too.

And going back to men doing 'nothing' on occasion, and women not understanding it - here's a sketch from Loriot (unfortunately I couldnt find any version with English subtitles) so only accessible if you have a bit of German:

called 'Feierabend' - man home from work, sitting in armchair, woman keeps asking what he's doing/thinking/would-he-not-like-to-go-for-a-walk/or-do-something-fun etc etc till he loses the cool at the end

what's her accent - sounds like Montana?
Remember that Coen brother's film set in Montana? I cant remember the name, hang on - Fargo (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fargo_%28film%29) - the same accent - it's funny cause it's reminiscent of a Wexford accent at times (SE-most county in Ireland). They say 'Hun' there as well. I remember someone claiming the word came from one of the Scandanavian languages (and is not a short version of 'honey'), which might make sense in terms of Montana - with Wexford, it was a long time since the vikings visited (8th-10thC), but many did settle in Ireland, and there are still signs of their presence in place-names, and surnames - and possibly in the language (I'm no expert here).

Oh, it's a Canadian accent alright. :)

I have quite a few friends that have elements of that accent.

It's taken me almost 2 decades outside of Canada to be able to hear those "Canadian" bits of accent. They range from really thin to extremely thick. And I still can't for the life of me hear the "about" thing -- which on many occasions has betrayed me as Canadian to some discerning listeners.

One journalist that I like, Dan Dicks, has a light accent, but it's definitely there. Another journalist that I like, James Corbett, has virtually zero "Canadian" accent that I can hear. (I think my accent is like James' and not Dan's, but I'm in no place to judge properly.)

A lot of Irish did immigrate/flee to Canada. I'm not sure about the Irish slaves though. It would've made sense for Irish slave to flee to Canada, but I'm just not up on my history enough to know/comment.

no, it was straightforward emigration - well, a spot of bother with the landlords, and, you'll love this one:

With no taxes or tithes, to devour up your wages
When you're on the green fields of Americae

Lyrics: The Green Fields of Canada
CHERISH THE LADIES

The Green Fields Of Canada

Farewell to the groves, of shillelagh and shamrock
Farewell to the wee girls, of old Ireland all 'round
May their hearts be as merry, as ever I would wish them
When far, far away, across the ocean I'm bound

Oh my father is old, and my mother is quite feeble
To leave their own country, it grieves their heart sore
Oh the tears in great drops, down their cheeks they are rolling
To think they must die, upon some foreign shore

But what matters to me, where my bones may be buried
If in peace and contentment, I can spend my life
Oh the green fields of Canada, they are daily a blooming
And it's there I'll put an end, to my miseries and strife

So pack up your sea stores, and tarry no longer
Ten dollars a week, isn't very bad pay
With no taxes or tithes, to devour up your wages
When you're on the green fields of Americae

The sheep run unshorn, and the land's gone to rushes
The handyman is gone, and the winders of creels
Away across the ocean, go journeyman tailors
And fiddlers that play out, the old mountain reels

Farewell to the dances, in homes now deserted
When tips struck the lightening, in sparks from the floor
The paving and crigging, of hobnails on flagstones
The tears of the old folk, and shouts of encore

For the landlords and bailiffs, in vile combination
Have forced us from hearth stone, and homestead away
May the crowbar brigade, all be doomed to damnation
When we're on the green fields, of America

And it's now to conclude, and to finish my story
If e'er friendless Irishmen chance my way
With the best in the house, I will treat him and welcome
At home in the green fields of America

I'd guess it runs on compressed air (CO2) cartridges, like paintball guns. And also it doesn't look like it moves very fast. Some of those shots looked like they were done in slow motion, but I think they were actually full-speed.

Compressed air sounds logical.

My rating:
My Recommendation: A worthwhile watch for SF fans.
IMDB: This Is Not My Life (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1405466/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1)
Alec Ross awakes one morning to find that he doesn't know who or where he is and doesn't recognize his wife or children.
_______________________

On Friday night, my wife - knowing that I ike SF and that I wouldn't usually watch TV - mentioned there was a SciFi film on TV called "This is not my life". I did a query on IMDB on it, and learned that it was in fact a New Zealand-made TV serial. Reviewers gave it an excellent rating, which surprised me as, from experience, NZ TV can usually be pretty mediocre. With a population of only about 4.5M it's probably not surprising.

I checked the TVNZ website to see what episode it was and saw that it seemed to be a rerun and that TVNZ now had a site for watching serials online: TVNZ OnDemand - https://www.tvnz.co.nz/content/tvnz/ondemand/

EDIT 2015-06-21 2207hrs:] also try TVNZ OnDemand - https://www.tvnz.co.nz/ondemand.

The service is free to anyone wanting to sign up - though I am not sure whether it will necessarily permit overseas access on the same basis - i.e., overseas viewers may need to access it via VPN.

So, I signed up and decided to tentatively watch episode 1. There were 13 episodes altogether, each about 45mins long - so that would be (13 x 3)/4=9¾hrs approx., all up. I wouldn't want to invest my cognitive surplus in it if it was mediocre. I figured that I could find out if it was any good, by starting at Ep.1, and if it was, then I could work through successive episodes one-by-one, as time permitted.
So, I started to watch Ep.1 - and I was hooked.
I ended up staying up all night and watching the lot, totally immersed and wearing my Logitech G930  headset. Very enjoyable.   :-*

Summary: Good story which hung together and had a clever and novel theme; good plot with lots of twists and turns (enabled by the theme); good acting; well produced. Not necessarily the best SF TV serial I'd ever seen, but pretty darn good.

... overseas viewers may need to access it via VPN.

If your computer shows as being in a different timezone to New Zealand you'll get a message saying Timezone incorrect, however if you go into your settings and change your timezone, clear out your browser cache, and reload the page, it will allow you to sign up to watch it.

It may do an IP check after sign up but I would have thought that would be part of the initial check before you got that far.

I registered successfully, but video didint work - in spite of disabling flashblock (PaleMoon) or allowing all plugins (Chrome). Flash is getting more and more problematic in my experience lately, so I dont know whether that's simply a flash problem or that they just blocking it cause of my location.

Try different browsers as well.

I tried IE, Pale Moon, and Dragon, all either changing the timezone or going via a VPN, none of them would play the content, just ended up with a black screen ... and they wonder why people download content via bittorrent, (which I'm about to do ;) ).
Title: Re: good Videos [short films] here :)
Post by: IainB on June 21, 2015, 08:05 PM
@4wd: Did you manage to get that site's content via bittorent? If so, then how?

Reason I ask is that I couldn't get fullscreen display from that TVNZ OnDemand site - on any browser - and put it down to WFN (Windows File Notofoer) having stuffed up the MS Firewall, or something - per separate thread.

However, having now fixed that (reset all Firewall settings to standard and uninstalled/reinstalled IE11 via Windows Features | Turn Windows features On or Off), I am still unable to view in fullscreen on that particular website.

I didn't find a reference to this here, so I wanted to recommend this site:

http://thekidshouldseethis.com/

It's just a curated list of youtube and vimeo videos which are made for adults but interesting or educational for kids. The site author has kids near the same ages as mine, so we relate pretty well to his posts.

He redesigned the site making it harder to use  :( (can't play videos from the main list any more, or from a RSS reader), but the posts are still high-quality.

Also, he tags things pretty well so if you're looking at a subject you can find the other interesting videos on that subject.

Plug - A Short Film about robots raising the last human girl on earth.

https://vimeo.com/109873939

Directorial debut from internationally renowned designer and concept artist, David Levy (Tron legacy, Prometheus, Ender's Game, Tomorrowland, Avatar2). The short film is the first 15 minutes of a science fiction TV series Levy has outlined and hopes to film. Unlike the highly VFX-ed science fiction films inundating audiences today, PLUG is a return to 1970's classics like Star Wars and Mad Max with a gritty universe made from mostly live props and real life settings. Enjoy and share!

"On a post-apocalyptic Earth, Leila Dawn (Natalie Floyd), is the only human survivor. Raised by Robots after humanity abandoned the planet they destroyed with nuclear warfare, Leila cannot forget her parents nor ignore her yearning to find other organic life. A hunt she sets out on with a Military Unit, Marker (Lex Cassar), leads Leila to discover the reality she’s been denied—a reality that sparks her ultimate quest."

Based on the horror-themed game for Andrioid comes a 20-part demon hunting video series called Camera Obscura.

Fun and predictable. And containing all the favorite elements (i.e smart and pretty heroine, evil family legacy, the geekly and soft-spoken  would-be boyfriend, some cheesy special effects, etc.) - like most enjoyable horror stories do.

First installment here:

Many thanks to @Renegade for apparently posting the link to the Twilight Zone episode "Wordplay" by mistake to the discussion Re: Is the term "Negro" offensive or not? (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=41817.msg391394#msg391394).
...One of the reasons that I love the Humpty Dumpty quote so much is that we **SHARE** language in ways that other things are not shared.
You don't get to change the meaning of a word by yourself.
It's nicely embodied in "Wordplay":

The trouble is, I couldn't recall whether I had seen that episode, so I had to watch it, but then it auto-played the next in sequence and I had to watch that...and then...etc.

Curse you @Renegade!

Oh, I know! That's a damn good episode, and probably one of the best Twilight Zone episodes ever.

It fits into discussions about language and linguistics just like the Humpty Dumpty quote from Through the Looking Glass.

And they are addictive... The series really nails so many different elements of human existence. The Monsters are Due on Maple Street (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Monsters_Are_Due_on_Maple_Street) is an excellent example.

My NAS is still down as I've not had time to get it up and running yet (need to rebuild and get a new drive), so I can't get to my collection there, which is probably good because I just don't have time for it right now. :D

When Ben starts to remember Isabelle, the only love he’s ever known, he realises she’s missing in his life. An existential descent into confusion and the desperate need to find out the truth begins. This reality depicts a stunning, surprising and dark world. A world that is clearly not his."

A little more info on this one:

Here we are again: a short film with heavy use of VFX has attracted the eyes of a studio, which has bought rights to turn it into a feature. The short, Sundays, is described by its creators as “an ambitious philosophical science-fiction proof-of-concept short.” It’s pretty, I guess, but it also looks like a pastiche of a bunch of other recognizable concepts stitched together with glossy CG. (Think The Matrix meets District 9 as a basic starting point.) Nevertheless, Warner Bros. has now bought rights to the 14-minute short, and is making some plan to turn it into a feature.

The backstory here is a bit different than other similar-sounding situations. This isn’t just a short that came out of nowhere. It is based on the concept from a commercial director that a producer brought to agency UTA, which helped the director, Mischa Rozema, set up a Kickstarter to raise $50k, and it was shot and finished at the production and VFX house the director co-owns. The idea all along was to create interest in a feature version.

1. A film about Everything.
2. An epic and mind-bending trip through Reality at all levels.
3. An award winning independent experimental feature film in which virtually every major area of human knowledge and experience is explored. Including, but not limited to: cosmology, quantum physics, evolutionary biology, spirituality, sexuality, neurology, philosophy, and cucumber-ology. All ideas and concepts are explored in an original, entertaining, and artistic way. You’d obviously have to be a complete idiot not to see this film. It even has giraffes in it.

4. An experimental cinematic creation that defies traditional categorization. Not to be confused with either a fictional narrative or a documentary film.
5. An experience unlike any experience that has ever been experienced. Not dissimilar to the act of loading the Universe into a shotgun and firing it into your brain. See also: Mindfuck.

6.  The blissful realization of the True Nature of Reality, the Universe, and Everything. A peek behind the Cosmic Curtain to glimpse the Eternal Truth obscured by the Almost Infinite Bullshit. A bite from the Cosmic Cucumber.

7. The satisfaction of Hidden Desires for the Unknown Pleasures of Eternal Lust. An Existential Orgasm. No mind shall be left unblown.

We Are the Strange is an independent animated film directed by M dot Strange. It uses stop motion, CG artwork, and greenscreen effects. The film premiered on January 19, 2007 at the Sundance Film Festival.

We Are the Strange focuses on "two diametrically opposed outcasts" as they "fight for survival in a sinister fantasy world." These two outcasts are an abused woman named Blue who has a mysterious degenerative disease and a living doll named eMMM.

The two meet in the Forest of Still Life, where Blue follows eMMM to Stopmo City on a search for his ideal ice cream parlor. Upon arriving in Stopmo City, they are caught in the middle of a fierce battle between bizarre monsters, making their progress difficult. Thankfully, a hero named Rain appears and easily destroys every monster that faces him. Blue meets Rain before he partakes in an "impossible battle against the source of all that is evil in Stopmo City." During the battle, Rain, along with Ori are crushed by Him after Rain states he wants to avenge his son. When the outlook seems grim, a fist made of aluminum foil breaks through the ground and starts the final showdown between good and evil. Six alternate soundtracks and author's commentary, including soundtrack by Noise Inc. are available on the DVD. The music used in We Are the Strange Trailer has been made by chiptune artist YERZMYEY/AY-RIDERS (a cover of t.A.T.u.'s "30 Minutes") using ZX Spectrum computer.

We Are The Strange (Full HD Movie)

http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=27d_1454936565 (http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=27d_1454936565)
Leopard caption; "That'll teach you creeps to give me a failing grade in survival skills." I added this as sort of a comic relief; schools seem to be focal points for all sorts of confrontational agendas; ideologues vs. civil rights vs. ego-trips vs. you name it; India as the venue is beside the point, it could be anywhere. In spite of zero tolerance zealotry and hyped up security, schools as proper institutions of higher learning sometimes become freeforalls for the lowest common denominator, and degenerate into thuggish human law of the jungle (not that I approve; I most certainly do not). Enter the leopard, an apex brawler of great natural beauty, power, prowess, and purity of motive, onto a real school scene and suddenly all bets are off, and all the petty human bickerers are backing off. It's also nice to see the authorities didn't shoot the big cat dead, but tranquilized and relocated him as an unspeakably valuable natural resource. And by the way nobody got killed.
Title: Re: good Videos [short films] here :)
Post by: holt on February 10, 2016, 11:01 PM
What I mean about the leopard's 'purity of motive' is kind of like, imagine one of those drama movies where the officer or culprit is called in for a psyche evaluation of 'Why did you do that?' or 'How do you feel about what happened?' after a physical confrontation or altercation. Imagine the shopping list of possible human responses; childhood trauma, professional or personal mental baggage, legal ramifications, personal resentments, or to what degree training played a part, or if it was a result of a misperception or misunderstanding; resulting in page after page of lengthy multifaceted endlessly convoluted human testimony, all of which may be in need of cross-verifying to weed out false motives or hidden agendas. Then instead, imagine if the adult full-on wild eight year old male leopard could talk, being asked all those psyche evaluation questions; resulting in a stunningly brief set of responses that boils down to hair-trigger jungle instincts on full-auto and describable in what amounts to 'ten words or less', none of it the least bit duplicitous or in need of second-guessing. :)

Movie written by algorithm turns out to be hilarious and intense
In the wake of Google's AI Go victory, filmmaker Oscar Sharp turned to his technologist collaborator Ross Goodwin to build a machine that could write screenplays. They created "Jetson" and fueled him with hundreds of sci-fi TV and movie scripts. Shortly thereafter, Jetson announced it wished to be addressed as Benjamin. Building a team including Thomas Middleditch, star of HBO's Silicon Valley, they gave themselves 48 hours to shoot and edit whatever Benjamin (Jetson) decided to write.

Title: Short Video - Doco about a thief, made using the hacked phone he stole.
Post by: IainB on December 18, 2016, 02:08 PM
An inadvertent but interesting study of human nature - the thief's and the man who made the documentary.

Published on 13 Dec 2016
After my phone got stolen, I quickly realized just how much of my personal information and data the thief had instantly obtained. So, I let another phone get stolen. This time my phone was pre-programmed with spyware so I could keep tabs on the thief in order to get to know him. However, to what extent is it possible to truly get to know someone by going through the content of their phone?

In the Netherlands, 300 police reports a week are filed for smartphone-theft. Besides losing your expensive device, a stranger has access to all of your photos, videos, e-mails, messages and contacts.

Yet, what kind of person steals a phone? And where do stolen phones eventually end up?

The short documentary ‘Find My Phone’ follows a stolen phone’s second life by means of using spyware.

Although you’ll meet the person behind the theft up close and personal, the question remains: how well can you actually get to know someone when you base yourself on the information retrieved from their phone?

Do you want the full story behind the film? You can contact me in order to answer all of your questions by means of an interview (I’m proficient in Dutch and English), or to invite me to a film festival.

This YouTube video version of a poem is a good example of use of the medium and of the hope for democracy in the USA (apparently based on the premise that it ain't there yet):
EDIT 2017-01-02 1637hrs: Just thought I'd better clarify, before someone criticises me for posting a politically biased comment or patiently explains it to me, that I am not so blind as to not see that this video and the quoted words (not necessarily the poem per se) seem to make a thinly-disguised pejorative polemic against the election of citizen Trump - who has been elected as president, by the people, in what I understand was a fully democratic process that the people have been contentedly using for donkey's years. So I am categorically not advocating nor supporting arguments one way or the other regarding that democratic process.

I should also say that one thing I don't support and didn't like about this otherwise rather good video is the raised fists, which could potentially be a further discrete fascistic incitement to the sort of mindless post-election violence against people and in "protest" riots that was experienced (if not encouraged) in parts of the US. However, I am aware that that mindless violence was probably committed by and probably revealed a lot about a relatively small minority of American people and their perception of the need for real "democracy" - the majority presumably seeing it as being undemocratic to go around thumping people and causing property damage because your party lost a democratic election to a sizeable majority, or something.

The raised fist, or the clenched fist, is a symbol of solidarity and support. It is also used as a salute to express unity, strength, defiance, or resistance. The salute dates back to ancient Assyria as a symbol of resistance in the face of violence.  One might draw parallels to, most recently, Standing Rock's Water Protectors, or not so recently the Civil Rights movement in the United States.

Plz go here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuhrD8eNi-0 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuhrD8eNi-0)
This is a Vietnamese vid, in which the little rat is 'rocking out' to the music. IOW, the music was not added afterward to the recording, but is part of the original video sound track, and the rat can hear it and is 'boogieing out' to the 'hip hop' as good as any human preadolescent child.
Either that, or it is a very clever fake-out, as betrayed by the distinct absence of any extraneous background sounds.  8)
edit-- Come to think of it, I wonder if the poor little guy is suffering from some sort of neurological disorder. The vid was originally posted 03-30-11, so according to this duckduckgo query (https://duckduckgo.com/?q=how+long+do+rats+live&t=seamonkey&ia=web), he's probably died of old age (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PN4FoblXjw) by now; so I'm obliged to finis my post with something sentimental, like "Fly high, little guy."
edit- Here's the way cool lyrics (http://www.metrolyrics.com/trouble-is-a-friend-lyrics-lenka.html) to the song track...what the heck, here's the actual lyrics.....
Trouble will find you no mater where you go, oh oh
No Matter if you're fast no matter if you're slow, oh oh
The eye of the storm and the cry in the morn, oh oh
Your fine for a while but then start to loose control
He's there in the dark
He's there in my heart
He waits in the winds
He's gotta play a part
Trouble is a friend
Yeah trouble is a friend of mine. oh oh

Trouble is a friend but trouble is a foe, oh oh
And no matter what I feed him he always seems to grow, oh oh
He sees what I see and he knows what I know, oh oh
So don't forget as you ease on down the road

So don't be alarmed if he takes you by the arm
I won't let him win, but I'm a sucker for his charm
Trouble is a friend
Yeah trouble is a friend of mine, oh oh

Zeno of Citium (/'zi?no?/; Greek: ????? ? ??t?e??, Zenon ho Kitieus; c. 334 – c. 262 BC) was a Hellenistic thinker[1] from Citium (??t???, Kition), Cyprus, and probably of Phoenician descent.[2] Zeno was the founder of the Stoic school of philosophy, which he taught in Athens from about 300 BC. Based on the moral ideas of the Cynics, Stoicism laid great emphasis on goodness and peace of mind gained from living a life of Virtue in accordance with Nature. It proved very successful, and flourished as the dominant philosophy from the Hellenistic period through to the Roman era.

Zeno died around 262 BC.[a] Laërtius reports about his death:
As he was leaving the school he tripped and fell, breaking his toe. Striking the ground with his fist, he quoted the line from the Niobe:
"I come, I come, why dost thou call for me?"
and died on the spot through holding his breath.[24]

He is referred to as "The Father of Accounting and Bookkeeping" and he was the first person to publish a work on the double-entry system of book-keeping.[3] He was also called Luca di Borgo after his birthplace, Borgo Sansepolcro, Tuscany.[4]

We cannot control events that occur in life, but we can control our response to those events.

To paraphrase Jack Benny: It's mind over matter - if you don't mind, it doesn't matter.

I watched the vid, and woke up the next morning to the realization that Trappist-1 could be a preview of our Sol-Earth system, after our sun turns 'red giant' and smokes all its planets and degenerates their orbits, then turns 'white dwarf'.

Streaming here: http://doyoutrustthiscomputer.org/watch

Apparently available free for just this weekend.
I'm watching/(listening to) it at the moment. The narration/voiceover is sufficient by itself - quite good - and the dramatised video is arguably somewhat superfluous, with music to "tell us" how to think - like a lot of American documentaries that I have come across. It's a bit "once over lightly". It could make a decent radio/.mp3 documentary - shorter too - but everything seems to have to be video nowadays...    :o

EDIT: Having tired of watching the video, I was sufficiently interested to continue listening to it as I browsed the feeds in my excellent BazQux feed aggregator. The video is about 1hr 18mins long. Some of the music is quite good and my ears picked up what sounded distinctly like some musical styles/riffs borrowed from others - e.g., Beatles orchestrated rhythms/music and Jean Michel Jarré's Oxygene.

As a documentary, I'd give it 3 stars out of a 5-star rating.
It was definitely a bit "once over lightly", seeming to be neither objective enough nor well-researched enough to qualify as a sufficiently rigorous documentary to do justice to the central theme of "Where is AI likely to take us?" - e.g., including the title - even making some seemingly covert and ridiculous politically biased assertions/statements/non-sequiturs (largely American politics). But then it does seem to be an American-made documentary, so that could be messaging that was par for the course and for its intended audience.

Overall, it neither told me anything particularly "new", nor did it really suggest other avenues of new thought. However, that may be because I am an SF addict and, having played about with some real-life applications of Operations Research, mathematical modelling, linear programming and (experimental) AI programming, I was probably already familiar with the general issues about AI that were raised in the video. The thing is that, pragmatically, there's probably nowhere else to go but forwards, or get trampled in the rush.   :(

Pandora's Box, E1: The Engineers' Plot

An old BBC documentary re the consequences of political and technocratic rationalism in the USSR.

Fascinating documentary - this one traces the history of the evolution of Gosplan - the USSR State Plan.
In the name of "Science", the USSR applied their economic theory to planning, to drive a command and control economy that seemed to succeed at first, but then failed progressively through the '60's and took the economy into crisis and collapse in the mid to late '70s.
A major limitation in the approach was that cost-efficiency and efficient resource utilisation were not imperatives and thus mindless production and ritual ensued as the planners gave up on the impossible/absurd task. There were food and other shortages, rationing ensued.
They had sought to model and plan the entire economy on an absurd basis, but it was too complex for them to understand.

"Why weren't we able to transform our dreams into reality?
Why didn't we succeed in creating a society where everyone could be free and fulfilled?
Who is to blame?
Not science itself, but the men who mistook what science was."

 - Vitalii Semyonovich Lelchuck, USSR Academy of Sciences.

Pandora's Box, subtitled A Fable From the Age of Science, is a six part (episode) 1992 BBC documentary television series written and produced by Adam Curtis, which examines the consequences of political and technocratic rationalism.

The episodes deal, in order, with communism in The Soviet Union, systems analysis and game theory during the Cold War, economy in the United Kingdom during the 1970s, the insecticide DDT, Kwame Nkrumah's leadership in Ghana during the 1950s and 1960s and the history of nuclear power.

The series was awarded a BAFTA in the category of "Best Factual Series" in 1993.

The Engineers' Plot
This episode details how the Bolshevik revolutionaries who came into power in 1917 attempted to industrialize and control the Soviet Union with rational scientific methods. The Bolsheviks wanted to turn the Soviet people into scientific beings. Aleksei Gastev used social engineering, including a social engineering machine, to make people more rational. Gastev founded the Central Institute of Labour (TsIT), Soviet think tank dedicated to the improvement of industrial efficiency.

But Bolshevik politicians and bourgeois engineers came into conflict. Lenin said: "The communists are not directing anything, they are being directed." Stalin arrested 2000 engineers in 1930, eight of whom were convicted in the Industrial Party show trial. Engineering schools gave those loyal to the party only limited training in engineering, to minimize their potential political influence. Industrialized America was used as a template to develop the Soviet Union. Magnitogorsk was built to closely replicate the steel mill city Gary, Indiana. A former worker describes how they went so far as to create metal trees since trees could not grow on the steppe.

By the late 1930s, Stalin faithful engineers like Leonid Brezhnev, Alexei Kosygin and Nikita Khrushchev grew in influence, due to Stalin eliminating many earlier Bolshevik engineers. They aimed to use engineering in line with Stalin's policies to plan the entire country. At Gosplan, the head institution of central planning, engineers predicted future rational needs. Vitalii Semyonovich Lelchuk, from the USSR Academy of Sciences, describes the level of detail as absurd: "Even the KGB was told the quota of arrests to be made and the prisons to be used. The demand for coffins, novels and movies was all planned." The seemingly rational benchmarks began to have unexpected results. When the plan measured tonnes carried per kilometers, trains went long distances just to meet the quota. Sofas and chandeliers increased in size to meet measurements of material usage.

When Nikita Khrushchev took over after Stalin he tried to make improvements, including considering prices in the plan. The head of the USSR State Committee for Organization and Methodology of Price Creation is shown with a tall stack of price logbooks declaring that "This shows quite clearly that the system is rational." Academician Victor Glushkov proposed the use of cybernetics to control people as a remedy for the problems of planning. In the 60s computers began being used to process economic data. Consumer demand was calculated by computers from data gathered by surveys. But the time delay in the system meant that items were no longer in demand by the time they had been produced.

When Leonid Brezhnev and Alexei Kosygin took over in the mid 60s, the economy of the Soviet Union was stagnating. By 1978 the country was in full economic crisis. Production had devolved to "pointless, elaborate ritual" and endeavours to improve the plan had been abandoned. Quote the narrator: "What had begun as a grand moral attempt to build a rational society ended by creating a bizarre, bewildering existence for millions of Soviet people".

I think it's because the person filming had to manually spin the reel, and they didn't spin it while recording as fast as it plays back on the projector machine.

While reflecting on this, I watched "The Decade-Long Quest For Shadow of the Colossus' Last Secret" vid.
Then it dawned on me; in their attempt to eliminate Pluto and -what- be politically correct?; to be in step with the times?; they've changed little to nothing. I looked for Pluto but could not find it. Yet Pluto is still there. You just have to 'quest' for it.
