Title: 10th Anniversary - long time member check-in thread
Post by: mouser on March 05, 2015, 10:49 PM
One of the things I wish for to celebrate the 10th anniversary of DonationCoder is to hear briefly from some of our long time olden-days members who have gone awol and haven't posted in a long time.

You don't have to say much of anything if you don't want to -- a simple "hello" would do, just so we could see your avatars and smile.

Even better would be if you gave us an update on your life, your hobbies, projects, etc.  No need to explain why you have moved on from DC -- just give a little hello for those of us who remember you fondly.

I really hope to see some posts here from our lost members -- it would make me very happy.

Bounty hunters activate! Here are the top 122 lost sheep, who haven't posted in at least 300 days, and have made 100 or more posts in the past:

Hello   :D ,

I am a member of the first days and still enjoy reading here nearly every day.

But have a hard time often also, since my English -away from computer terms- are
not existing and so mostly I avoid to read longer posts or even write myself an helpful answer.

I wish you all the best for the next ten years and kudos and thanks to the more actively members, especially to Jesse.

:-*  Thanks for keeping DonationCoder.com up and running.  :-*

I have posted a list of the top lost sheep in the first post (see spoiler).. I will offer a reward to bounty hunters who can track down and convince lost sheep to post.  Warning: there appears to be one time traveler in the list -- approach with caution!
I urge all lost sheep to turn yourselves in for your own safety.

Lost sheep here!

I went over to the dark side and bought a Mac Air. I still have a Windows machine but rarely use it now.

Ed! Great to hear from you.  No shame in using a Mac -- glad to hear you are still walking the planet :)

Hey :D

I apologize about any formatting issues or things of the like; I suffered a stroke last September, and only have the use of my left hand, and my smartphone for typing. I haven't forgotten any of you, just charging life importance.

I am now 22, engaged, and before the stroke, was making big strides in my life and my goals. Not attending school, but I got a job with a local computer repair gig, and his friend, and started a month later at Edible Arrangements. Currently, I still reside in Glendale, AZ, and most other life details are unchanged.

I'll try and keep up with this thread. My contact details are up to date, and the best way to contact me one on one is with Google Hangouts.

Same as edbro. Moved on to Mac.

Mac apps are no where near as deep and feature-rich as their PC counterparts though.

Ex.: Directory Opus kicks Path Finder's ass, FlashFXP eats Transmit for lunch, ClipX is better than ClipMenu etc.

What do I do currently? I build WordPress websites using Genesis framework for clients and recently turned my 500+ tutorials on how to customize Genesis into a membership site: https://sridharkatakam.com/. There are a lot of Mac specific apps like Gradient, CodeKit and Sketch that I use regularly which have no (good, that I know of) equivalents in PCs which is one of the reasons I moved away from Windows.

On a personal front, we migrated from India to Australia as wife got a job here in Melbourne.

Btw @mouser, have you looked at Slack (https://slack.com/)? It's an awesome hosted chat platform that's much slicker than IRC. And for non-profits, they will offer full free offering.

Hello there!

Oh I remember the donationcoder forums. I got in here via Cortex Command somehow. (I think this guy named Nahuel, who was Cortex Command's anti-piracy / anti-crack guy with this weird polar bear fetish (Might even have him added on Facebook), lead me here) (Edit: scancode was his nick!)

I was in ... maybe 9nth grade then, so somewhere between 14 and 16 years old. I am now 21 years old, however.

I was kind of a beginner with programming back then, but I knew decent amount of stuff still, so not a complete beginner. I think I even tried solving some of the programming puzzles found somewhere on this site and I remember doing some C++ puzzle that was related to banking (never got that one done).

Well I've continued and gotten a lot better since then. I've never wanted to do anything else than computer stuff / programming and to this day I still do not.
I will graduate with my B.Eng. degree of Software Engineering in 2 months and I will be continuing with a master's degree of software engineering after summer.
I work whilst studying in an engineering / consulting company with around 1200 emplyees. I am a system's developer / analyst and I make around 20% more than the average just graduated fella.

Recently, I've been getting into wines, cheese and coffee made from fresh ground coffee beans. I haven't gotten to actually try the coffee yet as I don't have a bean grinder yet, but I am obtaining this cool antique bean grinder from my grandma at the end of this month. Wine is costing me a lot of money, as I tend to drink quite lot of it whilst programming. I am thinking about switching to cheaper ones when I am alone.

I am looking to buy a new jacket, but I have absolutely no taste. This (http://puu.sh/gppJp/aac13138f3.jpg) and this (http://puu.sh/gppKj/10493f9f31.jpg) are the candidates so far.

As for what exactly I do with computers as of now; I have gotten into web stuff mostly, so Node.js, express, socket.io, HTML 5, JavaScript, jQuery, Transit, Redis, AppFrameWork, Phonegap, grunt, gulp, PHP and so on are the main things I am working with on a daily basis. I do a decent amount of C# and C++ as well, especially if I want to make games or something with proper OOP. I use SFML.NET (http://www.sfml-dev.org/download/sfml.net/) for all my desktop games.

Pixi.js and some other WebGL frameworks are also something I make games with, when I feel like I am ready to get annoyed by JavaScript, although JavaScript is one of my favorite languages.

There has been a lot of talk around the internet about the new Raspberry PI, Unity going free and Unreal Engine going free. I am honestly not too amused. Sure that stuff is great and all and Raspberry PI is amazing feat of hardware technology, but all of those just kind of dodge my interests. I always liked making games from absolute nothing because it was challenging and I'd learn a lot. I also LOVED implementing all the required algorithms by mysel, be that a simple projection or a path tracer or something more difficult. These tools take everything I love about making games away from me as they have all the "good stuff" already built in. Besides, 3D games are boring and damn near impossible to be made by a single person with the models and all.

As for the Raspberry PI, I don't do a lot of electronics. I am 95% software guy, so that does not really interest me that much.

Hmm what else, what else... Oh I make gamehacks as a small hobby from time to time. Nothing too serious; some packet forging, datamining, memory editing and tiny dll-injections. Apparently there isn't even that much work involved with, say, making a godmode or a teleportation hack for Final Fantasy XIV, Archeage or Guild Wars 2. BeEF (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BeEF), Nessus (http://www.tenable.com/products/nessus-vulnerability-scanner) and Metasploit (http://www.metasploit.com/) are even more interesting to toy with.

Unfortunately I've moved mostly to Reddit and Stackoverflow when it comes to online coding communities. Thanks for the email though mouser, I will try and drop by more in the future!

Really... 2011? I need to sort out my bookmarks, they read

Reddit
Giant Bomb
Twitter
Donation coder recent posts

Anyway, I blame Reddit for the lack of posts here! Also I actually managed to work out how autohotkey and visual studio works so I didn't have to pester other people to make my applications.

I worked at the University of Southampton when I joined and I'm still there. I look after online exams and lecture capture. My ExamStart system (remembering that I really couldn't program anything when I joined this site) is one of the only specialist University exam portals in existence (because no-one else would have use for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os46Zcuk_GU)

Hi Mouser. You may, or may not, have forgiven me for 'outbursts' which may have cut too deep.

First, let me make a minor criticism of this site infrastructure (sorry). Where is the SSL? I had to send my password plaintext to reset it. Tried using manual SSL on that page, but it "wasn't allowed on this page". SSL should be on all pages. I'm sorry, but - please.

Second, if your server costs are still as high as they were, you need to find a new host, for someone is making a living off you.

Third, I'm not getting rich myself, so what do I know. It seems to take a suit and stiff to really 'make it' in this world, so I just stick to my little niche, as do you. Probably we could have made more money together than apart, but we had ideologies that I think would have conflicted.

I've always respected that you built something with DonationCoder. People don't appreciate how much work it takes. People don't appreciate how much faith it takes.

However, I have learned, unfortunately, my choices are either be broke the rest of my life, or play the game by the rules society has set. I can try to act as morally as possible, not be shady, but gotta play by those rules, as sick as they may be. A large portion of the people who run our world are just pretenders in suits. That does give us 'real deal' people quite the advantage, *if* we know how to leverage it (rare) ;).

I've always been here. My regrets are only that I couldn't do more to help mouser, because I believe his heart is purer than most, and that I made mistakes that alienated us.

I think mouser+Bitsum could do a lot together. I just wish I knew a way to make it work. I would guess mouser also has a full time job these days? Not me, I struggle by with what I can. I tried a 'stable job', turns out most corporations are crazier than anyone you'll meet in any asylum ;p.

Refreshed the page and got your answers.

Also noticed that the primary login didn't seem SSL encrypted by default either! DIdn't check if I could manually do it, it should have default.

Maybe we can work something out in the future, a business arrangement that requires us to neither agree nor be friends, just produce, do the customer right, and earn a living at the same time. Who knows. I'll brainstorm.

Server costs are still through the roof -- but changing servers is such a hassle though, and when the servers run smoothly i'm loathe to change anything..
-mouser

On this, you gotta bite the bullet man. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent refactoring my server infastructure just to save costs or improve security. Sometimes I've taken a hit for it, but that's business.

If you're locked in, add up half the savings from one year, and I bet you could hire someone to 'unlock' you ;).

Just don't go too cheap, no 'shared cloud server' crap :)

G'Day all :)

Yes, I am still around :)

Because Jesse was so polite in the email, I've come back. It would be unfair not to recognize this community as a top community and the contribution it has made.

I've been mostly developing with Qt lately but I still have my C++ Builder 2010 installed along with some MS tools. That thing (C++ Builder) is never going away from my PC and it is good to have skills across multiple platforms.

My latest product is Advanced Network Configurator (developed with Qt) - Offficial Website + Description (http://techuniverse.net/?page_id=185) and can also be downloaded from here (http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail/Advanced-Network-Configurator/1399439370/1) and here (http://www.softpedia.com/get/Network-Tools/IP-Tools/Advanced-Network-Configurator.shtml).

P.S. I can certainly appreciate some user reviews.

Life sucks for almost everyone right now. The reasons are complex.

For some, they suck more than others, but in those cases, you just have to make due with whatever unfair or unjustice was bestowed upon you. Can't wallow in it. Easier said than done, I know. Believe me.

Hi, gang! Mouser, a hearty congratulations on the decadal anniversary, and it's great to hear from you. I've enjoyed this site and even tried to keep up with the newsletter & its links, but I've also had some unexpected bumps in the road taking a lot of my attention in recent years. Rather than get too overwhelmed to function I've kind of scaled back my online activities among other things.

That's gradually changing for the better, and since I'm about to graduate from school I may actually have more of that elusive thing called "free time" again! It sure is good that DC is still alive and kicking, because it's a great resource and a really nice community. :D

BTW, my long-time avatar is kind of ironic given the recent passing of Leonard Nimoy - but all the more fitting as a way to honor the guy.

You know, there is something to be said for simply surviving, as an adult/site/business, for 10 years in this world.

Especially for someone who has put themselves 'out there', as mouser has.

Believe me when I say that it comes with more drawbacks than rewards, and takes true courage.

Dear jesse and the rest of the DonationCoder family,

First off thanks so much for the email and reminder, 2009 was my last post. It is a real pleasure to say HI! again. I was never a real programmer (I'm a neuroscientist who makes do with Matlab), but I really do enjoy thoughtful conversations and interesting discussions, and DC was just brilliant for this (and I imagine still is!!!!). Jesse, I think you did the most amazing thing building this community, and you should be really really really proud of that.

FARR was my first love on this site, then I became interested in ways to improve productivity. My fellow DCers were always great to discuss/argue/share/laugh with. I moved to OS X and stayed around a bit longer as I wanted to share some of the differences and changes with this community. I still work for a living trying to understand how brains work, still living for work in the metropolis Airstrip One (aka London) and living a full life with a new Son.

I was always so amazed with how much Jesse cared about his software and how respectful he was of others. I know one can never "know" someone over this big crazy electronic web, but Jesse is obviously someone I would trust. I would gladly go out for a good coffee / beer / whisky (delete as appropriate), if it wasn't for the geographical displacement.

I would normally be a bit grumpy getting reminder emails, but DC is a family and this is a pleasure.  :beerchug: :drinksmiley: :beerchug: to the next 10 years!!!!

Hi, mouser, have a great, great birthday ! DC has helped me realized I could build things on my own, release them, and that people would use them. DC is a amazing place on the internet, where everybody like your efforts good or bad and I think that it's a lot because of you mouser. You are a amazing person and you make this place unique. And I'm truly meaning unique, I don't know of any place on the internet where people are as supportive as DC.

In the last year I also got sciatic pain that caused me pain when sitting, and now have to exercise an hour each day and this took the time I used to spend on DC (I'm getting better these days, but it's a sloooow process ). Because I couldn't code as much I've returned to playing to lot of pen and paper role playing games with friends.

In the process, I've also started writing one called "biz&beyond" about the creation of a startup of ghost hunting where you need to hunt ghosts and clients to grow up your business ;)

It is so wonderful to hear from you.  Playing games with friends in real life is a good way to spend your free time.  Biz&Beyond sounds funny -- perhaps you'll share more of it with us when you are ready.
Regarding sciatic pain -- I had it for half a year at some point in my leg.  Jogging on treadmill made it disappear at some point and it's just a faint memory, so probably yours will be soon too.

Hello all, I apologise for my long absence. I have been quite occupied in the last 4 years. I've completed a masters degree, climbed Kilimanjaro and joined a not for profit. I still search the DC forum for software ideas. I've stopped using many of the admittedly excellent DC programs, mostly because Microsoft seems to have come to their senses and included these features by default in Windows.

The most common one was a keyboard launch program like FARR. Those on Windows 7 and 8 will notice that the windows key mostly does the same thing now, although FARR is admittedly way more feature rich. I can't thank mouser and the other developers enough for making Windows a more usable and productive OS while Microsoft were busy pulling their thumbs out.

On the online front, I've mostly become a lurker, but I do post on Quora. Mouser, congrats on the 10th anniversary of DC!

sri, glad to see another DC member in Australia. I'm in Melbourne and I wonder if we could do a DC meetup down here?

Yo mouser and all,

Life is busy; I have moved over to scientific Python development and tech support. Cross-platform, though mostly working on Mac. I still get warm fuzzies when I see a DC newsletter.

Still full of appreciation and admiration for this quirky, skilled, generous community and its q,s,g founder.

Sadly, at least one name on the list won't be making it back for the festivities.

But I have to say I'm sure Thunder7 would be raising a glass right along with us if he were here. :)

I just missed out on the list by putting in the occasional trickle of posts.

I must have been 19 when I joined (I'm 27 now), back when I had my first hand me down laptop with a pentium r chip and 64mb of ram. Trying to connect to the world with 19kb dialup.

I remember Jesse giving me a free key when I didn't have a credit card to pay for one, and then all the help and encouragement in programming school. I treasure my NANY mug. It means a lot to me.

I still hang around, mainly to read the jokes, but it's always a positive vibe.

Thanks for all the good times and the help, and I'm up for a meetup in Australia. Also, if anyone needs any building work done, you can mention Donation Coder and I'll give you a discount.

Hello Mouser!

I still use AHK daily! I'm even thinking of setting up a good phrase expander that the entire team can use ( with hints and prompts, because basically people forget it exists, like keyrocket).

Anyway it's good to see that you are still active! I guess mouser's predication of micropayments came true, now it's available everywhere and people use it on a daily basis!

I love the dc community especially the great helpful people here. I still use many tools and it's my goto site for some coding snacks.

Live  life and enjoy!

This is the first time I'm reading about mouser's motivations so it's heartening to see you follow the dream! Live the idea brother!

Anyway if you are ever travelling abroad in asia, look me up and we should meet.

Hello Jesse and community members. Congratulations on ten years! I have fond memories of my time spent here. I am reminded of it often as I have two N.A.N.Y mugs that I use for pen holders. One at home and one at work. I still work for the US Army on military simulations. I have also written some software that is used where I work. I've recently started building games for them. I have done one so far and starting on a second one now. I'm using Unity and learning as I go. I don't belong to any online communities. I got rid of my Facebook account years ago and I never post any more to Twitter or Goggle Plus. There are no forums I visit regularly. I don't even really surf the Net much any more. I do use the Net every day, but it is mostly as a reference system while coding or troubleshooting. I've also stopped using most programs that I purchased during my time on DC -- all the various utilities and such. I just use programs as I need them to accomplish what I need to do. No more tinkering and tweaking my system. I've also started using a Mac about 50% of my computing time. Needed to make the switch in order to build apps for iOS devices. Outside of my day job, I have been technical editor on some books. Done about eight so far and just started on another. It keeps my busy on the weekends and brings in a few extra bucks to spend on games on Steam. Since my days on DC, I have found a wonderful woman that I live with. I have given up on forums/communities mostly to spend more time with her. We even find some time to play a game of Civilization IV together every now and then. Overall I have slowed down quite a bit. It turns out for most of my adult life I've had Bipolar Disorder II and didn't know it. That means that much of my bursts of energy were due to Mania. So most of my late nights and fits of overly abundant activity were bouts of Mania. Since I am now on medications, I am more "normal" and don't get get so hyper. I'm basically a lot more mellow. I'm glad to see DC is alive and kicking. It has always been a great resource. I'm sure it will continue to be so for many years to come.

Wow, it sure made me smile when I saw Mouser's email in my inbox.

Hi everyone. My life changed quite drastically in 2009, as in January of that year I lost my job due to the economic problems and mismanagement by the owner. I was the last employee remaining and the business closed down less than a month later.

That year I decided to do something I always wanted to do, but never had the confidence to do: go to college. Initially, I was pursuing a degree in computer science, but less than two semesters in I decided that if I were going to do this thing, I was going to do what I always wanted, not what was easiest. So, I switched to electrical engineering. It was quite difficult for a number of reasons, but a major issue was I quit school at 15 and never went to high school. I started college at 37, so I had a LOT of background to make up. I had horrible study habits in school before which is part of what lead to me quitting. I've been struggling with those bad habits since I started this time too. My grades are ok, not stellar, but certainly not what I am capable of, unfortunately. :)  It's funny, I spent my entire life thinking I was bad at math, only to find out that I'm actually pretty good at it, just lazy. haha

It has been a long road and college has consumed most of my existence for the last 6 years. Pretty much everything else in my life has dropped off to the periphery. I got divorced a few years ago, though that wasn't due to college. We both agree that we should have never been married, and we are good friends to this day.

I am about 3 semesters from graduating with a BSEE and am now trying to decide whether to pursue a master's or not. It's a hard decision, as I'd really like to get a real job again and stop being so poor! haha

Other things of note, I lost 100lbs a few years ago and was very active for a long time, but had some medical problems that prevented me from being nearly as active for quite a while and my lazy nature to take over again and I've gained most of it back. It's especially painful as the weather changes and the outdoors call so strongly. So many things I want to do, but I'm too fat and out of shape to do them haha. Oh well, I'll lose it again!

Well, I guess that's "other thing", not much else going on. Other than being the poorest I've ever been in my life, and being about 80lbs over weight, I'm the happiest I've ever been. I also don't really do much programming any more. I've taken a required C language class for EE, and recently decided to minor in comp sci so I took a few more classes for that such as a java class, and a data structures class I'm taking this semester, and helping fellow EE students with their C problems. I did enjoy some C in my microcontrollers class, and I'm working with a professor on a microcontroller based power controller on which I designed and wrote the firmware, and designed the board in Eagle CAD.  I still enjoy writing code, I just hate doing UI stuff. I like doing the back end coding, its all that interfacing with people stuff I don't care for. haha.

I'm glad DC is still here, I'll try to come around once in a while going forward. :) Well, back to studying. Have an Electromagnetic Fields test tomorrow.

Edit: I forgot to mention that this is the only online community that I ever felt a sense of belonging with, back in the day. I really enjoyed my time here back then. :)

tinjaw and Tekzel -- wow life has taken you guys on some rides!  I cannot tell you how nice it is to see your names and avatars again.  Sometimes i think it is a miracle and an accomplishment for many of us to just survive day by day.  And it should be said that there is no shame at all from stepping away from an online life when such a thing is distracting you from real life.  Real life takes precedence. Sharing some of your real life with me and us is very appreciated -- we are all human and struggle.  And for some of us (me included) sometimes we can feel a close bond to someone even if it's just from shared discussions of mundane issues on a forum.  Sometimes time has a way of doing that.  It was great to hear from you guys.  :-*

Hi there! Yes it sure has been a long time. In my case it was simply real life taking over everything a bit too much, and by some point I was so far out of the habit of posting that it never really occurred to me any more.

I would like to echo what seems to be a unanimous sentiment, that DC is a THE place to find great people, great utilities and a very supportive and helpful community.

Congratulations on the 10 year anniversary. The old place looks in good shape! I'll have to do some catching up.

I look at every news letter and log in now and again. I still have some DonationCoder credits, and probably when I'm forced to upgrade to Windows 10, I'll shower them on folks who help me the highly specific nonsense I'll be irritated with once I get there.

I still have my New Year New App contest mug! It has a chip in it right where I'd put my sipper, so it holds a bunch of chopsticks now, but I still have it! And I also still use the application that I begged Skwire to code for me as well, a good five years or so logged on Anuran (http://skwire.dcmembers.com/fp/?page=anuran).

I think what happened is that software went online. Desktop apps are really going the way of the dodo. DC is mostly about those, so it's understandable that fewer people are interested in this type of content.

It's certainly the trend -- towards online and mobile software.. Definitely true that donationcoder has long focused on desktop apps -- and primarily for ms windows.  But I tend to think of the site as changing to reflect the interests of members -- certainly our discussions are often about online tools these days.  But let's keep this thread positive -- no need for anyone to "justify" having moved on from DC, this is just a thread about reuniting briefly with old friends :)

It's good to see the old names again.   8)

I was full-time carer for my mother from 2007 until she died in July 2013 at the age of 98.  She developed dementia, so I didn't get much sleep in the last year or so. Now I'm stuck with a house far too big for one, and not much chance of selling.

I got my head back together mostly by reviving an interest in long-distance cycling. I worked up to doing a couple of 200+ mile rides last year, and have hosted a few passing international tourists.   I'm still looking for enough employment to stop the savings eroding.  :(

Hi Mouser,

Thanks for reaching out. I had a lot of fun on DonationCoder, and learned a lot. For a while I ran a computer coaching/support service, very much supported by the wisdom of the forums - when I got stuck, I reached out to everyone here, and received a lot of support and good advice. Thanks for that.

Back in 2006 I bought my first Mac, and so I stopped dropping by so much.

I still love the idea of the community, and appreciate all the work you've done in building it! I hope it lives long and prospers.

Well I haven't completely written off the idea of the little buggers making a comeback, if my workload were ever to ease up. The main thing that changed for me was a bit of a jump in how busy my company became: it's very hard to turn down good work, and by the end of a long day I'm not feeling very humorous - if I wrote the strip after some days I've had recently it would be a bit too pithy I think ;)

I'm still doing a lot of coding, mainly Java, C# and Delphi although I had to dust of my assembly skills recently to update some very old graphics stuff I wrote back when performance had to be found by design rather than by plugging in a new GeForce Titan

I do return to Donationcoder every so often, lurking around, so not really lost. Just not posting as much as in the past.

Hey, mouser - how cool to see your name in my inbox. I hope you and all of the other brilliant DC members are doing well.

Most of the time I was here, I was trying to learn (often by reading interesting threads) how to keep my VAIO running. It occurred to me one day that learning how to do things like dig around in my registry & perform other magic tricks was no longer a skill to be learned, but rather a requirement in order to run windows & over time it really ticked me off that I'd spent so much money and time, only to be forced to learn what did not come naturally to me at all - to need so many skills just to get the computer to allow me to do something simple like write an email. So, one day I just got so frustrated, I turned the VAIO off & never turned it on again. I went 3 years with no computer, the last 2 relying on my iPhone 4s which worked like a dream. Then, I didn't even want a computer but I got one, with the hope of getting a job online. I have an Apple MacBook Pro. I'm taking my time with learning it, but so far it's just like a computer that works.

I loved my time here. I loved the huge variety of topics and most of all I loved the way it was run...nobody except a troll I think was ever condescending of my elementary queries, or anyone else's, and that's really what the forum here was to me. Kind of a shelter from the storm of too much information. I was so happy when I could get help, I remember all of the times members have answered my questions, and how nice everyone was.
I have so much respect for all of you here. It's like the computer keeps telling you, "No", & you all keep saying, "Really? Watch me".
Now I'm just an old lady on Facebook (I still don't understand twitter,  :()
Thanks for pulling me out of the rock I was under, I also have some unfinished business with another member for their kindness when I was on the board. :)

Good luck, have fun & keep up your nice attitude, mouser.

Sincerely.

I still use a lot of the software that I learned about through this forum and some of it I feel like I've been using "forever" so 10 years almost doesn't seem long enough. Thanks for the call-back mouser!

I've picked up the hobby of CNC milling so most of my forum time has been on CNCZone lately. I also have a YouTube channel I've been trying to update every now and then with my current machining projects (I'm sure a clever person could easily find it if they wanted).

My battles with software are unending. The CAD/CAM software landscape is bleak, I don't know how some of these people sleep at night when they charge thousands of dollars for software that is occasionally barely-functional. My desire to vent is hard to repress, but I'll save it for other threads...

Good to see the site is still kicking!

Many thanks to mouser for starting the thread, and sorry for being late to the party. I'm busy, and it's mostly for the same reason I no longer frequent this forum.

Another big reason, as mentioned by some others: my main desktop is a Mac (a hackintosh to be exact) nowadays. A macbook air and two Android devices (a phone and a pad) take turn accompanying me on the road, and my server is a linux box. Windows? I still use it occasionally, but only in a virtual machine.

I'm not a programmer. I came here to find software not heavily promoted elsewhere, and more importantly, to find software reviews written by real users, and from time to time could share my experiences with others. Having used mostly mac software the last few years, however, little on the forum remains relevant to me, and there's even less I could contribute.

I do check out the forum from time to time, but the frequency has declined; so does the average length of stay. I thought of saying hello a couple of times, but the longer I've been away, the harder it is to say hello. It doesn't mean I don't miss you guys. As many have said, this is a great family.

Happy Birthday, DC!

Hi!

So, ummm, I got a software developer job back in 2011, and after that it seemed like less fun doing hobby development. After having forgotten to check in at DC for a while due to real-life stuff, I guess it's been a nagging sense of guilt that has kept me away - including not having worked on fSekrit for far too long. That, and the overwhelming thought of "how the heck will I ever be able to read through the backlog of unread posts?". There's 103 pages of those, so that's about ~4100 posts. I think I'll skip catching up :)

Other than that, I've been thoroughly disillusioned with the opposite sex, and have given up the idea of a happy ever-after. Instead I've developed a serious relationship with World of Warcrack, which is a time-consuming polygamy of 8x level 100 toons (and counting). Yep, that game has also just had its 10-year anniversary.

Still got the job. After having worked for some 3 years with Adobe's crapjob AEM CMS system, I'm currently working on back-end integration stuff in Java on the JBOSS platform. I'm slowly reaching the conclusion that RedHat makes up version numbers by adding the various 0.x versions of alpha-quality software, but I guess that's what Open Source gives you... can't make the software too good, or you won't be able to make an income on supporting the hackjob :p

Using a shiny macbook for work now, but won't be switching away from Windows for my home workstation anytime soon. OSX is just too unstable and full of suckyness.

f0dder!!!!!!!!!  :greenclp: it is so great to hear from you.  no need for anyone to feel any guilt for being away from dc or declaring "bankruptcy" from unread post list :) ps. you're too young to give up on the idea of happy ever-after!

The #1 most wanted lost sheep is now Nudone (https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=13), 13th person to join the site, and infamous creator of Cody the donationcoder mascot.  This individual must be tracked down and subdued!  I'm doubling the bounty!

Update, according to the forum info (hard to say if it's accurate), but it says today is Nudone's Birthday!

Elvis just left the building (aka: nudone was a visitor, less than 30 minutes ago, but it may be something automated as I see his name in the recent visitors list several times a day)

Hello. Indeed it is my birthday today but more importantly it is nearly the 17th of March, the date ten years ago I joined the site. (I was going to wait until Tuesday and then briefly say hello but Mouser has called me out.)

There's not a lot to say... I'm still here; just lurking. I probably check the forum five times a day. I don't do Facebook nor Twitter so this forum takes the place of all that (as it did before social media came along).

I'm busy with work, putting wordpress sites together (none of my own designs) or fixing other people's. I don't do any illustration, etc. I wouldn't have the time even if I had the inclination now. Maybe that will change one day (sorry Cody).

Anyway, it seems odd saying much else as I'm still here, everyday, just lurking behind that wall over there. I'll still be here in ten years as I'm sure DC and mouser and Cody will be. Until then, all the best to everyone on the forum.

nudone!  the nude one!!

good hearing from the old time members.  You know, a lot of people scoff at the nature of the internet and technology, and how it's not as personal.  I don't know.  This is pretty real.

Just wanted to post the historic first time Cody appeared.  Some sweet nostalgia:

For those not familiar with some of the amazing illustrations that nick (nudone) has done, a good site to check out is his Codex Transportica: http://www.codextransportica.com/

Nick, I cannot express to you how happy it makes me to see you post.  This may sound loopy, but to me, the cody you created has become donationcoder to me, in my mind.  And it's that little bird that I think of when I think of the site.  You breathed life into him with your illustrations and he is real to me.  And it's important to me that you know how much he means to me and to the site, and how much I appreciate the gift you gave the site in your drawings of him.  I cannot (and do not wish to) imagine the site without him, and by proxy, you.

I baked a cake for my creator.  I want to thank him for giving me life and giving me a place to call home.

Happy Birthday Nudone! (a bit early, I suppose...) Thanks from me also for contributing the mascot.  I still remember the thread where he was born:

Happy birthday, nudone!

I have to join with mouser and say thank you for your contributions to this site, and especially for Cody.

This site wouldn't be what it is without Cody as its mascot.

Phil !!!
Thank you for saying hello.  I know it must be hard for some of you to break a long streak of not posting.. Must feel very strange.  Maybe even for some it feels like backsliding into online habits that were not healthy?  If that describes you, please know that this isn't about trying to drag anyone back into a past life -- just about me/us remembering people that had an impact here.

Happy anniversary, mouser! :)

I'm late to join this thread, and I must have been late joining DoncationCoder, too, 'cause no way it's been 10 years!  :tellme:

DonationCoder was my 40 year crisis, 8) together with buying a piano, and I must say it was a fun time, completing a Coding Snack just about every other night! I still have the DonationCredits, but I'll probably bankrupt DonationCoder if I withdraw them? :o

But three kids and a wife soon took their fair share of attention, :-* and now I run my little five man computer firm, selling computers, hosting servers, developing web pages and of course programming helpful tools for local businesses, so I still use AutoHotkey pretty much every day!

In the evenings I run the town news web page, and dream of finding the time to complete my groundbreaking software project and retire at 50! :)

So thank you DonationCoder, for all the praise, and for giving my life direction!

I'll be back full time when that retirement is secured, mouser! :P

SKROMMEL!!!!!!!!! !!! !!! !!!! !!!! !!!! !!!! !!!!!!! !!!!! !!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!

Truly one of our most mysterious, fantastical, and treasured members.  Some people don't even believe you are human!  And here we even got a peak into the life of a skrommel -- love it!  Perhaps you will consider posting one day a photo of the skrommel gang/family?

As for your accumulated DonationCredits -- they are yours and you deserve every cent, and you should withdraw them and use them to buy some nice vacation for you and the family -- and I know it would make all of your fans happy to know you were enjoying something because of their donations.  Message me and we can figure out a good way to send you the donations that maybe avoids a large paypal fee -- and you might need to wait until the end of the upcoming fundraiser for the funds.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TAKING THE TIME TO POST!!!!! SKROMMEL  :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-* :-*

Doesn't answer my emails and last active December 2010!

Hello!

It's been a while since I last came here, but I've missed it!  Really nice to get the email mouser  :)  And it's great to see the forum so busy!

Different priorities took me away for a while.  After doing some python stuff (my NANY 2010 mug stills sits proudly on the desk!), I went on to work with a bit of Angular / KnockoutJS, just for fun.  After a job move, I now work with people doing Android and iOS development, so I've spent the last year trying to understand mobile architecture.  It's fun, but the difference in models between web and mobile is like learning to tie shoelaces in a completely different way   :wallbash:

Since I last visited, I've moved from being a Windows guy to being an OSX guy too

I'll try not to leave it so long next time...especially as mouser's challenges are what got me back into coding in the first place

Hey skrommel :) Your coding snacks were wonderful, wishing you the project success that you aim for!

Hello old friends, and Happy Anniversary!

I still visit this fine forum once in a while, but I unfortunately don't have the time that I once had to test and post about software.

Still I hope to have something worthwhile to post at some point in the future.

Best Regards to Mouser and friends!  :)

Joby_Toss and I are beta testers for FreeCommanderXE.

Mouser - I wasn't in the list!  :P  And I get all the rss feeds.

Didn't make the list, but its been a long time. When DC started (and I was very excited about FARR... still one of the first programs I load on a fresh OS install, though I am no power-user of it), I was very into tweaking my computer... now, I've gotten 10 years older and just want it to work so I can! But I still checkin every now and then. This thread has been interesting... lots of names from yesteryear!

Hi everyone! I haven't participated much in years because I've been off doing other things. Too much internet, too little sunshine. Among other things, I've friended many top performance photographers around the world and started G+'s first ballet community, Ballet Every Day (https://plus.google.com/communities/101245855256796901460). I even had nude ballet photos for a while until Google (and facebook) shot that down -- you know, any American social site can't handle a phucking nipple or slit! I don't know jack about photography, except that if I were a photographer I'd be raiding the local ballet company for photos, since you can tell a ballerina to do anything, and she can actually do it, unlike professional models.

Still using Linux (openSUSE), Android, Chromebook, but am delighted to see what Satya Nadella has done so far with Microsoft. Nadella seems also to have halted Microsoft's relentless patent-trolling, letting Apple take that lead, for, after all, Steve Job did invent hydrogen, helium, and nitrogen, and therefore everything in the goddamned universe is owned by Apple. Hope you guys are doing well; I'll be in and out.

Hey guys,

Congratulations on the 10th anniversary! zridling, I remember enjoy reading your posts/reviews because they always came with good and enjoyable photos lol

Anyway, I have moved on to OS X as my main system (due to work) so I don't read software reviews and look for discounts very often anymore.  At work, I still do some cross platform work, but mainly develop and maintain some Mac/iOS apps so objective-c (and lately Swift) is my main gig.  Even though I develop on OS X, I still use FARR, xplorer2 and website-watcher (which I got a discount from here) everyday on a separate machine.  Such essential tools...

Good old times here Jesse, and just the other day I found a "super duper programmer" in my t-shirt collection which I think I got it from here (along with a DC mug)!!!  Way coooool!  :-*

I'm very happy that I'm not a lost sheep :)

I count the NANY years as some of the happiest I've spent in an online community. I'm more likely to catch up with DC's RSS feed these days, but it's not in the same ball park as being a regular visitor.

I also concur with the underlying sense of guilt that others have mentioned... but there doesn't seem to be enough hours in the day.

And we're also spending more days out and about: We've just come back from walking down in the Australian Alps (Google Story (https://plus.google.com/u/0/104117984502087087410/stories/41c7a348-a1f3-36e5-8424-b43c1612c86d14bc2dc66c9): I haven't even blogged that yet :( ), and are planning on doing the 660km of the Australian Alps Walking Track (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_Alps_Walking_Track) in Spring and the Great North Walk (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_North_Walk) over a couple of weeks in Winter (as final preparations).

It's awesome that DC's 10 and reading this tread has been wonderful (but I've got to start thinking about what thermals we're going to get and how to shave those extra 100gms off our pack weights...)!

skrommel !!

( Though I am not a lost member, I beg everyone to allow me to wish to skrommel. )

I knew you were busy somewhere and will come to us one day :D

You do not know, but I am indebted to you. I have learned Autohotkey more from your codes in www.donationcoder.com/Software/Skrommel/ than from anywhere else. I feel proud to say that I have become known developer from my NANY apps due to your help. DC has given me a platform to showcase my abilities.

Though very small, all my DC credits actually belong to DC and you. I am donating mine to DC and hope it will help you to withdraw some of your credits. My best wishes for your family. Please keep visiting.

Regards,

Anand

Skrommel - I concur with anandcoral - since you were so kind to post so many autohotkey scripts (source and all!) - I too used your work as a launching board for learning autohotkey.   Now I used autohotkey ALL THE TIME and I don't even have to always look up the API anymore.

So I thank you, too, Skrommel!

Greetings greetings

I do now and then come back and peek, but I am not there often enough to jump in so I just lurk.

Life's gotten far too busy now that I got it into my head (my midlife crisis, different from Skrommel's) to be a wine merchant.
Not making a living of it yet so ALSO contracting... and using more webtools (grumbling all the way, often) than software as a result (other people's PCs etc.)

But this site, community and all it has to offer should be there another 10 years I hope, in whatever form it will take...

If any of you guys are on Facebook, and would like to keep up with the important things that are happening on DC from time to time, then you should "like" our Facebook Page! xD

Wow, hadn't been here in a long time and just decided to start checking back again! Ten years already? How'd that happen?

I remember when Mouser first floated this site as a kind of experiment to test out his unique approach to the freeware / shareware divide. Now it's so much easier for developers to make money. The only problem is, as soon as they make it they have to give it to Apple!  :D

I'm still using OneNote and still a big fan of the kind of freeware gems this site has always been able to ferret out of the wild Internet. So some things have not changed all that much.

Congratulations on 10 awesome years, Mouser! And a heartfelt thanks as well. Whenever I have some weird software issue nobody else around me even understands, I know I can always post about it at DonationCoder!

Remember when I made the suggestion for the pocket sized, 2-sided, ceramic "Cody Coin" tokens? They would be perfect for this kind of award. All we need is 2 nice round images to have printed on it. One with Cody for one side, and an image for the type of award it is, for the other. ;)

I've been here since 2007. I've never moved on from DC, it's always been close to my heart. The last six years I've been writing for Gizmo's Freeware (Tech Treats) and keeping up their Facebook and Google+ pages. I popped in to donate a few bucks, say hi, and say thanks for the kind words in the links section for Tech Support Alert. Gizmo sent out a post today mentioning the anniversary and stating quite wonderfully why we should support sites like this.
On a personal front, our family lost three members inside a year, and after years of building two straw bale houses on our own we found a contractor we love who is finishing them up for us. That's what happens when you get old and lose your job boss. ;D
Warm wishes to all.....
Rhiannon

Thanks mouser. It was my Mom, my Aunt and my Grandmother who died, my cousin and I are still standing. The houses are coming along really quickly. Almost faster than we ca keep up with. My latest task is counting how many electrical outlets there are, what kind they are, what sockets and switch plates they need and then rounding them up.

Life over at Gizmo's is busy, the site just keeps growing - sometimes when I think about all the people from around the world volunteering their time and talent it boggles my brain.
I don't know what goes on under under the hood of making the site work since I'm at the front end writing stuff, so I can only imagine the amount of work.

Congratulations on ten years to mouser and the rest of us. :)

Wow.  2 posts last December kept me out of the official Lost Sheep list.  Before that, I was out for over over 2 years (2012)...Oh well, that is close enough, isn't it?

So what took me away from the posts in 2012?  Can't really say.  Just sort of wandered away I guess.  Maybe that was when I had my lateral promotion (if you can call it that) at U. S. Steel.  Don't recall.  Either way, they let me go a year and a half later during their draw downs (even now they are closing plants around the world).  I was pidgin-holed in a dead-end, silo position I hated (but I convinced myself wasn't all that bad because the pay and benefits were substantial - not to mention 15 years of service towards a pension - who still offers that!?!).  Woe be to me if I overstepped my boundaries into someone else's silo (which I did regularly - probably what led to my dismissal).

Anyway, thanks to the grace of God, I landed a new job at a Software as a Service company for the healthcare industry as a Devops engineer and I LOVE it.  The hours suck and the pay is on the low side of average, but otherwise it is pretty much my dream job.  I get to put a lot of time into learning scripting and have been doing mostly bash and powershell scripting.  I also do a lot of work with MongoDB administration and VMware.  For me, that is pretty much a perfect work environment; well except for the MongoDB stuff - that was a *bonus* that I am currently in a love/hate relationship with.  At least it IS interesting though.

Unfortunately home life has suffered some because of the aforementioned sucky hours.  Still, we get to see each other every day, if not all at the same time, so it could certainly be worse.  Between work, home life (read chores), and church; I have little time left for any leisure activities and spend them mostly with the kids, so sorry I don't get here much, but I do stop by on occasion.

(Okay, okay, I am not really sorry at all.  Like others, I wish I could be here as well as doing the other things, but since I can't, I chose family over the forums and I am not sorry at all that I choose to prioritize my life that way.  If I know anything about most of the people here, I would say you aren't sorry about that choice either - well, maybe some are, but not most of you  :P )

Hello everyone.

I hope you are all fantastic. It seems like a lifetime ago that I was last active on DC. I do miss the gang - the website as well as the IRC channel. I REALLY apologize for taking so long to make this post. I found out about it late and then it was longer yet before I made posted this message.

Let's see, the last time I was on DC was two states ago. I was in Louisiana at the time. Then I moved to Texas. In that year after Ann and I moved, I moved 7 times that year. It was horrible!!!! Sadly, since that time (2010) my wife and both my dogs (children) died. Incredibly, that was just over 5 years ago already that Ann died. It took me a while, but I eventually got a good job again and finally got back on my feet. Like many Americans, work now keeps me too busy, but I generally like what I do and my colleagues.

As some of you know, I have lived with pain for 15 years now. I still struggle with this, but am generally completely independent and I am managing the pain now with vigorous exercise much better than I did in the past.

Now I live in North Carolina where I finished my education centuries ago and met my wife. I was in the mountains for a while (western North Carolina near Tennessee) and now I am on the coast (eastern North Carolina). As some of you might have seen from JoTo's post, I took a trip to Germany last year. It was my first time off North America. I travelled there with my sister and visited JoTo and we stayed with his work colleague. Of course I loved Germany, particularly the extra sharp mustard, maultachen, Swabian pretzels, spaetzle, beer, and the people that we met. We had a wonderful trip.

All of you take care!
Love, KenR

Ken!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you for posting in this thread.. I knew about your trip to visit JoTo but it's nice to hear your description of it.. I've known enough people with back pain to know how devastating it can be.. It's great to hear you are back on your feet, so to speak, and just great to hear from you in general.  :-*

Hi Mouser and all the people here at DC
I still drop in and have a look sometimes, usually after I get a newsletter.
I have been working in Adult Education at our local community centre where I have been tutoring adults with literacy and numeracy issues as well as people who want to learn a bit about computers, just the basic sort of stuff, browsing the internet, sending mail, copying files.

And it really isn't that dangerous in Australia Mouser, suits of Armour are not really needed, most of the time lol

Cheers and thanks for a great place on the net
George

Hello DC people!

This is my first post, but I have donated and bought software from this nice website many years ago.

The fundraising looks successful, and I'm glad to be out of the woodwork!  :D

Hi Rick -- it you 6 years to make your first post -- hopefully it won't take you so long to make the next.

Grorgy!!! Great to see you
Regarding your Australian suit of armour comment
Everyone getting off the plane flying into australia should be given a giant book of poisonous creatures to beware, one suit of armour, and some kangaroo repellant, since the suit of armour isn't going to help you with a mad kangaroo.

Another "lost one" here. You can strike out my name from the list :D

It's true, I haven't been here for a while, but I'm glad to see that this great community is still going strong. Thank you Jesse for being the driving force behind it. And congratulations everyone for this 10th anniversary  :beerchug:

I'll try to come back more often and hopefully make a post or two before the 20th anniversary  :P

Good morning dc!!

I know I'm a month late, but perhaps I haven't completely missed the party (fashionably late...right?). What a great thread to read. Thanks mouser for harassing me until I got in here (you get the bounty it seems), and congratulations on such an amazing achievement (no we cannot pretend we walked through the wrong door)!! Unfortunately I cannot claim to be a lurker like many others, I must live with the shame of having abandoned DC. Who could possibly believe it's been almost eight years since I first came to DC, and it's been two since I was last here :(. I can't really say quite what happened, I guess things just kind of got in the way and much like with f0dder a nagging sense of guilt kind of crept up on me. I've received several emails about this thread, but I knew it was going to take forever to get through the existing posts (how could I possibly post without reading through them all?), and that I'd end up writing half a book in response, so it had to wait until things calmed down a bit IRL (my apologies mouser). In the end it looks like it's taken about three hours haha.

As a quick asside, I'm afraid I must concur with db90h Mouse Man, we should have SSL by default up in here. Paging Gothic Man! Also the server costs do seem incredibly high. It's high time I did DC some favors, so hit me up in PM if you're in need of any help there.

--boring stuff starts here (or perhaps two paragraphs ago)--

So I guess the biggest change has been my moving to the USA (away from the "insane crazy creatures" [yes I saw that mouser, and the other one like four posts ago, you just watch yourself]) in November last year (and who knew we had so many Australians? This is basically one big Aussie thread). It's been great so far (except for living in Miami, yuk). Big change number two is that I'm now married (the reason for moving to the US) which is awesome (to a guy in case of any of the third-person pronouns I use later on confuse anyone). It's been a long time coming (been doing the long-distance thing for as long as I've been on DC), but had to wait for DOMA repeal etc etc. He's graduating next week with a PhD in forensic psychology (have you graduated yet mouser or are still getting crap from Josh on a daily basis?), and the day after we'll be moving up to Virginia (yaaaaay!) to accommodate his working for the FBI in a one-year post-doc doing deception detection research.

In other news that will surprise everyone, I'm no longer an avid news reader. That too went by the wayside as real life got in the way. The main reason for that was probably the reduction (or elimination) of my daily commute when I started working remotely. In general I've fallen away from most of the online communities I used to be a part of in favor of devoting more time to real life. I miss it a lot actually. I tend to peek at the front page of Reddit during those standing-in-line type moments, though I've probably been spending more time on /r/thebutton recently than I'd care to admit. I'm a little less cagey these days about putting personal information online, but you'll still never catch me on Instagram or Facebook or any of that crap - I can't stand LinkedIn as it is. I still can't handle coffee, but caffeine (usually in the form of black tea, which until I left home was drunk from one of the DC mugs which mum insisted on keeping so now I'm using some target crap) has become a dietary staple. Some days I wonder if it keeps some kind of undiagnosed ADHD at bay. I'm still not keeping myself in shape like I should, but the old ball-and-chain has me eating fairly well (mostly - the easter candy...well...). Some random memories that came back as I was reading this thread include meeting App, my lovely mugs (and mouser being far too generous with the swag, especially mailing it to .au), the fun times in IRC, TNT (of course), and that one time Josh learned how use a webcam (*shudder*).

On the work front, I'm now a filthy Mac user (like seemingly everyone else on this thread). I hate Apple just as much as always, but it was a necessary change to continue into the work I wanted to do (and, honestly, Microsoft are far too retarded/clueless these days to be trusted with an operating system). I do appreciate how much more it resembles Linux than Windows does, and there's a pretty decent community around making it even more-so (homebrew mainly). I'm still a hardcore android user, currently on a 1+1 running CM11 (see, I don't even have time to update my handset these days! :_(). I'm still an open source nut, and have long since moved away from the desktop-support side of IT, and am now working mostly with high-scale Linux infrastructure and software development, primarily for early start-ups (keeping my distance from the suits and 9-5ers as much as possible). It's a lot of fun, and who could turn the opportunity to be constantly learning new stuff on the job? I'm currently working one full-time job and one part-time job (the full time since I got US employment authorization, and the part-time is winding down the Australian job I kept while waiting for authorization) which is burning me out pretty effectively, but the part-time should be over soon.

--boring stuff probably ends here--

Alright, that's enough bla bla bla from me I think. I'll sick my head into the (new, as I understand it?) IRC channel in the next couple of weeks (probably after the move) and see if I can't troll Joshua a little. Thanks again mouser, it's been so great reading this thing, and congratulations again on a job very well done.

Ehtyar.

What an awesome read.  As much as I shy away from most human contact in real life, I'm just loving hearing updates about people's lives here in this thread.  As I said before -- no need to apologize or feel guilty for moving on to other interests.. It's just great to hear from you!
(I'm afraid I left my PhD program, which remains a tender issue for me, but that's for another day).  Thank you -- and everyone else -- for sharing part of yourself here.  It's been such a pleasure to be able to share a small slice of life with you all.

OK fine, I guess I should check in.

A long time ago (6+ years I think), I stumbled upon DC while searching the internet for free software. I was never a very active poster but there was a point in time that I read every thread voraciously. It was soon after that Mouser made the programming school and I was hooked into doing the C++ exercises and getting a very cool first exposure to programming with some encouraging pushes from Mouser and other DC'ers. Because of the programming school I majored in CS in College am now am a full time developer in downtown Chicago. I also grew up, got married, had a kid with a second on the way leaving a lot less time to spend browsing DC and the Internet in general.

I attribute much of the success in my career to the DC programming school. If it was not for that I would have most likely majored in a different field and only would have had an interest in software as a hobby and not as a career path. I do occasionally browse the forums so don't be surprised is I suddenly post on some random thread.

DC is a great community and I hope it will remain strong for many years to come.

I finally heard back from 40Hz!  :o

He reports he is still alive and kicking, and though I hesitate to reveal more of his situation out of concern for simple privacy, I can say life has taken him in a direction somewhat askew from most things tech, getting more active in music and it's doing his spirit well.  He does miss us all and hopes to soon pop in for a bit here and there, though it will probably be later rather than sooner when he crosses this path again.

Not all those who wander are lost;
The old that is strong does not wither,

I must admit to being a lost sheep! I used to drop by quite often but seem to have wandered off for some reason. I plan to correct that in the future. I have always been beyond impressed with this site. The original concept was just perfect at the time (boy, that was a while ago - eh?) and it's great to be able to say that this site's primary focus and integrity has not changed. Great job!

I've snagged a few pieces of software from here over the years and never had a complaint and I just can't say that about any other software site on the planet. I can't wait to pour some coffee and wander around awhile and see what's new.

Keep up the great work!

Hi guys. I'm a supporting member whose needs have been so well met I just don't check in that much. There are also a lot of sites competing for my eyeballs these days, and my eyeballs get tired of computer screens more quickly than they once did.

But I use the knowledge and software I've gained here every day. So even if the coders here aren't sure, there are plenty of folks like me who use your work on a daily basis.
