I've never had any problems with Linkman, and have none with 8.80, but I do wish you would fix some longstanding irritations with the installer.

1) When updating an existing installation in a non-standard location, it should default to that location rather than always selecting C:\Program Files....

2) Installing Start Menu and Desktop links should be separate options, and if the Desktop option is selected, only a single icon placed there, not three.

xtabber,

The installer tries to read the installation location from here in the Registry at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Outer Technologies\Linkman.exe\Path and if found sets the installation to this folder. I've made a quick test with a freshly installed Win7 x64 in a Virtual Machine. Installed Linkman Pro 8.80 to c:\apps\Linkman. After installation, launched the installer again and it pointed to c:\apps\Linkman.

As to other issue. I've noted down that Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts should be separated for the next installer iteration.

Looks good so far!

My one request: More control over Linkman menu and toolbar icons. In Firefox I have too many Linkman icons on my status bar (or I guess it is now called the "Add-ons Bar"). When Linkman first started adding these icons there was an extension allowing customization of the status bar icons. So I rearranged them plus did away with the "Add all tabs" button as I have never used that except by accident. Then the extension was removed so now I have the Linkman icons I rearranged plus the new ones added with every Linkman update installation. I'd like to see a checkbox for adding those icons or not. Same with the context menu icons - Linkman wants to add too many! Much better would be a submenu where hovering shows all the icons you want, but not make the overall context menu even longer.

I put in a support request for this back in April 2011 and was told that the icons would be customizable in the next Linkman version released, but I haven't seen it. If an option for this is there somewhere and I have missed it I apologize... and please tell me where it is!

Thanks!

Jim

JMac,

right-click menu customization is on schedule for 8.90.

We haven't had time to add customization to the Firefox addon, as it's a nightmare to code Firefox addons (you are fiddling around with a simple text editor and have to restart Firefox 1 million times). So I cannot promise it in 8.90, but you could do it yourself:

1. Get LinkmanFox.xpi from http://www.outertech...fox-bookmark-manager
2. Unzip the content
3. Open chrome\content\browser.xul in a text editor
4. Search for <statusbar id="status-bar">
5. here you see the icons as statusbarpanel entries
6. remove the entries you don't need and save
7. zip the files (including folder structure) as LinkmanFoxNew.xpi
8. Drag & Drop LinkmanFoxNew.xpi to the Firefox window

The bookmark manager Linkman has been updated to version 8.8.0.16.
This is mainly a bugfix release, but we recommend every user to update.

Download

http://www.outertech.../en/download#linkman

Update process

Simply install over your current installation (it should take less than a minute).
All your settings will remain. No reboot is necessary.

Changelog

Functionality Changes:

* The Linkman tray icon will change its color to indicate a status change:

Red Icon: normal (default) operation mode

Purple Icon: Linkman is loading or saving a bookmark database file

Green Icon: Linkman has just synchronized a bookmark file using an external synchronization service like Dropbox or Google Drive. The Icon will stay green until a new bookmark is added, or an existing deleted.

* The last bookmark/folder selection is now stored in the lmd database instead of registry/ini file

* Added Firefox 22 and Google Chrome 26 compatibility

* When adding bookmark paths (for example http://www.outertech.com) from Clipboard Linkman will retrieve the bookmark name

* Improved Powermarks import

* Added "Start Linkman with Windows" option to Linkman Pro installer

* Separated installer Start Menu and Desktop shortcuts into two sections

Bug fixes:

* Layout problems on low resolution monitors

* Internet Explorer 9 detection on some systems

To the coders out here at Donationcoder: never trust FindWindow() - it's not 100% reliable!

* Fixed a potential crash if an addon is blocking the Firefox communication queue

* Implemented a bookmark validation work around for Jetty web servers

* Autosave after receiving bookmark option works now also with adding via drag & drop

* Work around for OLE error dialogs on systems with OLE registry errors

* Some other minor fixes

Hi,

Linkman remains my #1 program as a research assistant and also as a PIM and an everything finder.

Look forward to trying out the new stuff.

There is one little enhancement needed that I do not see above.  When a search gives 0 hits, we need a "0 entries found in x.x seconds" in the status bar.  :)

Beyond that I have to try the user-defined fields a bit. However, if the print feature was a bit stronger, I would be more motivated.  (hint, hint).

Funny to see Powermarks import improved.  It was pretty good even a gazillion years ago.

Steven, the 0 entries found message was implemented some time ago (after your request).

Hi,

Your right.

Somehow I did not think I saw it before, I definitely see it now in my 8.8.0.14 !
A couple of days ago I did a reinstall (after an image reinstall) perhaps I had an earlier version.

Thanks, well done once again.  (Sometimes the little foxes jump through the vines.)

Hello,

I'm evaluating Linkman and so far I like what I see.

A question about functionality:  I would like to use the "Add all links..." button to capture browsing sessions.  To do this I would like to specify the name of the folder during the "Add all links..." action and also Linkman would need to overwrite any folders with the exact same name.  The net affect is to be able to capture / update browsing sessions.

Is anything like this possible with Linkman?

Thanks,
David

You can do it from all browsers using the Linkman Plugin buttons and right click menus (for example 'Add all tabs to Linkman' in Firefox), but currently you cannot select a name for the folder. The folder's name is the same as the title of the first tab. You can rename it of course.

Curt, I'm under the impression that Announce Your Software/Service/Product is really for NEW software/services, not for software that is well-known and long-established, such as Linkman.  Moreover, the guidelines in the section you suggest say specifically "Do not post about minor version updates to commercial software."

Hello,

I just purchased and installed Linkman Pro 8.8.0.  It installed with no issues and I was able to import my Firefox bookmarks.  There were about 23,000 bookmarks and 3,000 folders and the import seemed to go fine.  I then opened Firefox and tried to use the Linkman "Add & Edit" icon to add a new bookmark.  I now have two problems:

1) When I tried to add the bookmark I got the error "a connection cannot be made with Linkman".  I confirmed that both the Firefox addin and Linkman are using Port 80.  So I thought that perhaps I needed to reboot which I did.  I now have the following problem.
2) The Linkman icon in the Tray has been purple for over 45 minutes.  I understand that purple means that it "is loading or saving a bookmark database file".  Is this normal for the "1st open" after importing a large number of bookmarks or is Linkman "hung".  I do see constant disk access but I have other apps running so I really can't be sure Linkman is still running OK.  After importing I did a File | Save As and saved the database file to a network drive (where backups occur).  I was able to roam around and even Sort the imported bookmarks so I've had no indication that anything is corrupted but after the reboot this very long delay in a "purple state" is worrisome.  How long will this "load or save" go on?

Thanks,

Just upgraded to 8.80 a few days ago and am now getting the following error in IE:
Another application is blocking Linkman TCP/IP prot 80. Try changing to port 81 or 82 in both IE Toolbar (Menu | Settings | Linkman Communication Port) and Linkman(Tools | Settings | Browser)!

I have never seen this message before and the only port setting I see are the one that is set to 7777 that says it is only for  Firefox, Chrome or Opera.

James, from 8.80 the port is used also in IE (where is the message that says it's only for FF, Chrome, and Opera?).

Please set the port back to 80 or 81, then go to the Linkman IE Toolbar menu and set it also to the same port.

Linkman 8.91 released
« Reply #22 on: December 26, 2013, 06:06:41 PM »
On Outertech's homepage for Linkman the latest version is 8.9, (has of course "now" been updated), but on Bits du Jour (BdJ)'s homepage you can right now get version 8.91 ("‎26. ‎december ‎2013 22:09:07"). I'll take this as evidence Linkman still is being more or less maintained. The reason it is available for download on BdJ is that it soon will be offered with a discount, 62% off, making it $14.99 instead of $39.

Curt, "more or less"??  In my experience, Linkman is constantly being maintained.  And on the few times I've needed it, I've found their tech support to be extraordinarily responsive.  Linkman Pro continues to be one of my favorite programs.
