CDBurnerXP 4 released
« on: September 22, 2007, 10:15 AM »
Well, it seems September is really bringing a whole new batch of major software updates. This week is the turn for one of the best freeware burners out there, CDBurnerXP (which, as you see, it's dropping the "Pro" suffix). Three years have since passed since last time this burner was updated, and after a long developing phase, which resembled Duke Nukem Forever as various rewrites and a new focus of the project happened in between. It seems to be worth the wait, as the developers wrote new burning components from scratch, bringing the application to modern times in terms of optical media support, and fixed some MAJOR bugs which really were a hit to the usability of the last stable version (one of them almost prevented data burning, as it didn't recognize folder nesting). Some things were dropped from the project as well, like the option to tag your media files (very slow, anyway) and audio ripping, though they said that they probably make a comeback as separate applications. Also, there were some other changes that won't please everybody. First, support for Win9x OS has been dropped. Second, it uses .NET Framework 2.0, although there's a way to avoid installing the complete package which is detailed here. The list of changes:

- Support for new technologies like Double layer DVDs, Blu-Ray and HD-DVDs
- Internationalisation (i18n): Support for multi-byte characters on discs and translations of the program
- Support for FLAC audio files
- disc-to-disc copy for audio and data
- Save discs and compilations as ISO file
- Support for WPL playlists
- XML based project files for interoperability
- fixed many bugs of 3.0.116 and 3.5

They've redesigned the site as well, though the help file is still outdated, and they're looking for volunteers. So, if you're up to the task, ya know where you should head :)

Says it is Vista compatible.

It also says you can verify disks - anyone know how? I am burning ISO images with it but there doesn't seem to be a verify option.

Yes, but it verifies data after burning, it can't verify burnt disks on demand. In the 'burn disc' dialog, check 'Verify Data After Burn'. If you want to verify disks, I suggest you to use Nero InfoTool, which is free as well.

Hmmm - it doesn't seem to have that option when you burn ISO files.

mmm it crashed on me at first run. several times. it said "sorry you got this error..." and stuff. then i realized that i had my burner off the pc,, meaning i forgot to plug it back in. i guess that was it all about, not finding a "compatible device" attached. though it did told me later and seems to be working fine now.

heheh, me too. Lasted 2.69 minutes on my comp. lol

But my hardware was working perfectly. Could it be my sata burner? I highly doubt it! I think it's just another coaster factory.

PS. I never found it very good at multisession & I'm afraid after not being able to update the first multisession disc this time round I've given up on it...

If you uninstall it removes it. You don't have to reboot on uninstall.

Manually Install NMSAccessU.exe
This service will provide CD/DVD access for any user under NT/XP/2000 regardless of Security Policies.

VERY IMPORTANT:
NMSAccess must only be used on NT4/2000/XP systems (Not Windows 98/ME/95). You must have Administrative Rights to install or remove the service. After installation, every time the machine boots, NMSAccess will start automatically as needed.

still havent got it to work..(dun have cd drive  :tellme: ) i think ill give it a real try before givin up! ;)

If you have no need for multi-session discs, then it's probably better to stick with ImgBurn...it's extremely reliable.

One comment to the latest version to minimize your coaster collection:

If you're about creating DVD-Video, you should strictly use finalized disc in ISO 9660/UDF file-format, otherwise some players would reject the disc. However, CDBurnerXP 4.0.015.277 can't produce this. Even if you select Disc > File system > ISO9660/UDF, the resulting disc is in ISO9660/UDF/Joliet format, so it's just a coaster that might be played on some tolerant players and on PC.

Update for the latest version 4.0.022.370: Now selecting File System > ISO9660/Joliet makes compatible data DVD, however, when creating video DVD the proper file system ISO9660/UDF is automatically selected and the final DVD is created properly in this file system, but it's still incompatible with some home DVD players.

Unfortunately, the problem lies within home DVD players, which sometimes don't follow the guidelines in full. Even Nero with quality discs and burners has compatibility problems.

Maybe, however even Nero 6 burns compatible video DVDs, at least for players in my reach. The data and even the file system appear the same in a PC drive, the only difference is that the one from CDBurnerXP doesn't play.

try http://infrarecorder.sourceforge.net/

it's superior by far

Disagree, tried infrarecorder on two PCs, failed on both. Had to do a system restore on one because autoplay stopped working.

No problem with CDBurner XP4 so far.

For me InfraRecorder did its job properly, but was unable to burn faster than 4x. Also, it erases RW media without any warning.
