Keyboard shortcuts
« on: September 08, 2007, 01:11 AM »
Figured I would start a thread about this because it would most likely be useful to a large user base here at DC and not just me, so maybe this will get some attention...

Anyways- I recently became keyboard nut. I am going insane with hotkeys and shortcuts. My mouse has a longer battery life :o and I am working faster. My point is, what other hotkeys are there (for most programs, they seem to share the same ones for the same/similar functions, thats what I am talking about)?

For those that may not know, I will list of what I know (off the top of my head)

Control+Alt+Delete - the infamous key combo seconds before the bashing on the keyboard (Starts Task Manager)
Alt+F4 - close the current window
Start key+E - open My Computer/Windows Explorer
Control+T - TABS! Open a new tab in your web browser
Control W - close the current window/current tab in web browser (and some other apps, ex Pidgin)
Start+R - Run! (your program or command)
Backspace - go back a page/up a level
Insert - in word documents, overwrite text after the current letter by hitting insert and typing your text. Hit insert again when done to toggle off.
Delete - delete a file/folder/etc and delete characters after the current cursor line thingy...
Start key+Tab (Vista only, AERO required) - Vista's "Windows Flip 3D" version of Alt-Tab
Alt+Tab - view and switch to different running apps by holding alt and tapping tab
Control+O - open a file
Control+S - save a file
Control+F - find
Control+H - find & replace
Control+X - cut
Control+C - copy
Control+V - paste
Scroll Lock+X - Xfire In-Game Chat

I am sure I missed a lot, but this is (supposed to be) a learning thread, and I am sure that I at least helped someone learn a new hotkey (I hope...) :)

Please list any others that you know of!

I use Ctrl+F4 instead of Ctrl+W.

Here's what I've collected for several programs (some of these are set by me and not the default):

DirectAccess:

You can select a piece of text and press ctrl+shift+w to create new Autotext command.
ctrl+shift+A adds a new command to launch active application.

Opera:

Ctrl+B will paste a URL an already copied URL onto the clipboard and press enter for you.
c - closes current tab
z - go back
x - go forward
ctrl+Z - bring up the last closed tab
F8 - Focus the address bar.

EverNote:

To jump to the blank note, press Ctrl+N
Ctrl+Alt+N - to jump to new note from any application
Ctrl+Alt+V - to paste to new note from any application
ctrl+F: to focus the search box.
When search brings up a big note, F3 (jump down by highlighed words) / Shift-F3 (jump up)

Gmail

# - Delete the current conversation

XYPlorer

F7: to toggle between current and previous folder locations
You can toggle InfoPanel using F12, and there are special shortcuts like shift+F12 to maximise IP and alt+F12 to toggle to previous panel size.
ctrl+N: create new folder
ctrl+shift+N: create new file
focus address bar: Alt+D
ctrl+P: to copy path to clipboard
ctrl-q: preview

Firefox

c - closes current tab
z - go back
x - go forward
ctrl+F12 - bring up the last closed tab
a - previous tab
s - next tab
Alt+D - Focus the address bar.
