New feature idea, is it too late?
« on: July 11, 2007, 08:44 AM »
I can see that if things go the way you want, that little application box is going to get veeeery full.  One thing I would like to see is a tree view where plugin updates are a subtree of the program they update.  Automatically expanded only if there are updates. Maybe an option to show only applications or plugins that have updates.  Perhaps the ability to create "folders" in there to organize the apps.  I could create a DonationCoder folder and put all of your programs in it.

Would be good if there was some kind of grouping, to sort by update status "updates available","out of date", "up to date" etc. DCU can do this by itself. Filtering out programs that have not changed is a good idea, would be a nice option or tab, cos you need to view a list of all recognised software too (for duplicates or maintanance).

would it be possible to have different options available, similar to how emails can be displayed in different ways, sorts and groupings, could there be a menu "View by" with expandable groups:
  • Update Status
  • Program Title Index (A,B,C...)
  • License Type
  • Release Date (month?)
  • Age (months? out of date)

this is basically what im debating:

1) have different "tab" for different groups, and move all current tabs into an Options Dialog (this ill probably do no matter what)
2) have a treeview type thing to select groups of programs
3) have a full filtering/sorting system -- this would be useful if we decide to make a version of the program that is meant to let you search/browse/install from tens of thousands of pad files.

tens of thousands of pad files.

Yes, what are you doing with PAD files?

ASP's database has 63K records (with a lot of rubbish in it, I downloaded it yesterday)
PADdb has 28K records
PAD Database has 49K records

I'd have a seperate "browsing view / adding extra" for adding in applications via pad files, and not clutter the "update manager view" with it. At least not give the impression that DCUpdater just installed 63000 apps!  ;D

Yes I'd imagine that adding something like an unknown file it could be a wizard type thing and not in the main interface at all??
