hibernate, damit! or a nice tool called wizmo...
« on: June 27, 2007, 06:35 AM »
http://www.grc.com/wizmo/wizmo.htm

it's a multiuse tool I just found because my 2gb laptop often doesn't obey orders and doesn't like to hiberate, even after installing M$ patches that supposedly fixed that! (

Example: wizmo hibernate.

the nice thing is that you can _force_ the command: wizmo hibernate! (aka: hibernate, damit!) :) .

It does understand other commands (see website).

If you have multiple monitors, this might help as well.

Hm, if regular hibernate doesn't work but forced does, you probably have some application that blocks the process for some reason or another. Might be a good idea locating which piece of software this is, so you avoid problems.

(wow, I wrote a post in a thread related to Steve Gibson without flaming him!  :o ).

Anyway, this Wizmo doohickey seems very interesting. I will play around with it a bit later.

to add to the list: NirCmd.

NirCmd is a small command-line utility that allows you to do some useful tasks without displaying any user interface. By running NirCmd with simple command-line option, you can write and delete values and keys in the Registry, write values into INI file, dial to your internet account or connect to a VPN network, restart windows or shut down the computer, create shortcut to a file, change the created/modified date of a file, change your display settings, turn off your monitor, open the door of your CD-ROM drive, and more...

http://www.nirsoft.n...t/utils/nircmd2.html

P.S. it also does hibernate mode..

I wonder could you use something like that in conjunction with Autohotkey -
in order to make keyboard shortcuts for some of it's various commands - or would there be an easier way ?

Here's a DC thread that mentions NirCmd in FARR aliases:

Hm, connecting to VPN without going throw the network devices thing - that might be useful, since my windows is currently in a semi-b0rked state; after installing logitech webcam drivers, my "network connections" folder is empty. Yay, logitech >_<

I hate their drivers - overly intrusive and mega-bloated stuff. Their webcams (the physical part) are nice though, and so are their mice... at least their mice work without driver install, USB plug & play goodness.

tomos,

As the 1950s photographer J. Allen Cash once said, you don't have to understand technicalities, just how to use them   8)

FARR2 works a treat, and it's easy to use.  Ask Mouser for a link   :)

I've never used the aliases
so you inspired me to have a look  :) - I wouldnt use most of the ones currently listed there but I know theres more coming.
Who knows I could even try figuring one out but that regular expressions is a scary business  :P

well, just so you know, wizmo hibernate damit doesn't do anything in my system.
I don't feel like reinstalling the OS just to fix this :), but it's getting annoying.
I have 84 processes running, any idea how to pinpoint the culprit?

Uhm, killing them one by one? (if they resist, ya know there is this article about zillion ways to kill something)

You can also use stronger words like "hibernate, motherfucker" or your blasphemy of choice ;D
