I guess I see that it makes sense if one has to use a specific and costly chunk of hardware.
I'm so lazy that any peripheral that I use needs to be within arm's reach.
Of course, as my possessions have increased over the years this has meant an increasing resemblance to our knuckle-dragging forbears.

Maybe my thinking is too simplistic, but...
...if they truly "sit next to each other" as you mentioned here, the least expensive solution might be to get them a little USB Flash drive to pass back and forth. You can get a 2 GB drive for £6.39 here.
whomever has the scanner connected could scan the negative, place it on the flash drive, and then unplug it and hand it to the other. Worth a thought or two.

but here's comment # 14 from Darwins link
...which may be completely irrelevant :-\ :)
The proper setup for shared scanner is as follows:
1. Install the scanner on any computer over LAN.
2. Install the supplied software driver that “usually” comes free!.
3. Mark the newly installed scanner as “Share” resource
a. run windows explorer
b. highlight the scanner
c. select “Sharing” option.
and you are set!EDIT: I didnt get much further than that, boy do people bitch a lot on some of these sites
