I'm at work and will try to write more, unless somebody else want to fill in more of the details.

from http://scratch.mit.edu/about
Scratch is a new programming language that makes it easy to create your own interactive stories, animations, games, music, and art -- and share your creations on the web.

Scratch is designed to help young people (ages 8 and up) develop 21st century learning skills. As they create Scratch projects, young people learn important mathematical and computational ideas, while also gaining a deeper understanding of the process of design.

Wow... there is a lot to this program.  Could overwhelm a kid.

Here is a little animation I made: http://scratch.mit.edu/projects/cthorpe/3646

You have to have Java ( :( ) installed to see the animations online :(.  There doesn't seem to be a way to save the animation/game/whatever into another format on your local machine or upload it anywhere but the scratch page.  It would be really cool if it could create flash swfs.
