Converting from FLV to AVI
Curt:
... Probably what your viewing software is doing is simply taking whatever file is handed to it, and examining the contents to decide how to handle it...
... if I take a divx myvideo.avi, rename it to myvideo.avi.mpg, and burn that onto a DVD, my player will still not be able to play it because it doesn't have a divx codec in its firmware. -CWuestefeld (May 30, 2007, 12:23 PM)

I have of course no idea why my media players will play these renamed flashes. All I know is that some of them will never play a flash file, but if I rename the flash to .avi or .mpeg or .wma - they will play the file. WMP will start out by saying "This is not a proper mpeg file - do you really want to play it?" and I will answer Yes, and WMP will play it without any problems at all, even though it maybe (most likely) still is a flash; only a renamed one.
I have so far only tested on music video flash files.
[Edit]: You are quite sure - but did you test it?
Curt:
To my surprise I just found a Flash To Video (avi, wmv or mpeg) converter that will keep the sync' between picture and sound: the $100 GeoVid Flash to Video Encoder PRO.
When it was a surprise it is not only because well estimated encoders like SUPER not will do this job properly, but also because I really couldn't think very high about the GeoVid app when I saw it open. The features and options are quite poor; you will not be impressed. But the result was actual a little impressive, and that should be what it is about, shouldn't it.
But A HUNDRED dollar??!! No; I am not going to buy this one!
- maybe I should try out the kid brother; a fifty dollar bargain...

Recently came across this one: http://www.smallvideosoft.com/
Look for Freez FLV to AVI converter (also handles FLV --> MPEG, FLV --> WMV).
Tried it out and it worked fine, but I didn't look for lip synch and I only ran it on a short clip.
They have other freebies too, like an iPod converter. :D Yay freebies!

I will relegate my off topic comments to spoilersIf you suspect a program is merely changing the file extension, it's easy to check: compare the old and new files with Beyond Compare.
I'm certainly no expert, but "AVI" is a "container" format. AVI files can contain audio/video streams that use are compressed with all kinds of different codecs. You can get AVIs with mp3 audio and xvid video, ac3 audio and divx video, etc.
Incording to KMPlayer the AVI I happen to be watching right now uses Xvid and MP3.
There are other container formats out there. A notable one is matroska. It lets you have DVD style chapters, multiple audio streams, built in subtitles, etc. Definitely worth a look if you're about to convert a lot of video.
BUT, what Curt is saying brings up a good point, why convert and loose quality if you don't have to. Before converting, drag the FLV into your media player of choice, if it works just associate FLVs with that player...
Curt:
I *imagine* the main reson for this "non-converting" metode may very well be that the (music video) flash first was recorded as .avi / .mpeg or another video MUSIC format. And that the flash converting maybe primarly changed some video settings and not so much any audio settings??? But I really am guessing; I have no idea of the true reason.

Right now, as I write, Denmark is behind 0-3 against Sweden (european championship football qualification tournament), and they have only played for half an hour (30/90)!!
This is soo sad... :( Heyy!!! 1-3 Now!! NOW WE ARE COMING!!! 8)
[Edit]: 2-3 (61/90) :) [Edit2]: 3-3 (75/90) ;D
[Edit3]: Total chock!! 29 seconds before end of game, a spectator ran into the court and tried to attacked the referee and actually grazed him. The rest of the match was cancelled and the result came within five minutes of "thinking": Denmark has lost the match, 0-3 !!!
:o
:(
In 1992 the European FairPlay prize in Football was not given to a footballer, but to the Danish spectators' union...
This is just sooo sad. :( :( :(
