« on: May 09, 2007, 01:23 AM »
i recently had to convert some FLV files to upload to a mobile phone when i found this tool, which i think will be useful..

Riva FLV Encoder
• Transcode your existing video files to the advanced Flash Video (FLV) format and vice-versa.
• Riva FLV Encoder comes with the free Riva FLV Player.
• You can transcode the following formats: AVI, MPEG, Quicktime, WMV.
• Version 1.2 supports exporting images from a video as JPEGs.
• Based on the FFMPEG encoder.
• Freeware, donations accepted.

Maybe, but it sure is difficult to download! I gave up using Firefox, and got it in IE with only two tries.

The Video-Lan-Player http://www.videolan.org/ should be able to convert from each format it can play to each other codec that is installed on the computer. Also Streams can automatically be "ripped" and converted in an absolutely flexible way no other program offers.

I use http://www.geovid.co...o_Video_Encoder_PRO/ and I haven't any problem with converting my files. Easy and simple and I don't loose quality and my nerves. I like it  :)

Sometimes, or for small files, the online convertes also can come handy. I have collected a couple ones here:

Is it possible to convert .FLV to .AVI (or any other normal PC video format), without loosing the synchronization between picture and sound? I think the various formats / converters are doing a very poor job on this. As an example Lynne & Tessa have so far lost the lip synchronization when their flash movies were converted to any format I knew of, no matter what converter I used.

 :tellme:

[Edit: Because of the link I added, I have just now realized that regarding the L&T flashes it is enough to rename from *.mpeg.flv to *.mpeg.
However, it is very seldom possible to do it this easy way.]
[2'nd Edit: confusing "flv" changed to "mpeg"]

For so many years I have done what these companies made me think was the only and right way: downloaded a program and converted my flash files. Never did anyone tell me or even imply that this is totally unnesessary. Listen folks: I have just "converted" all my flash files into various video file formats: All you have to do is to rename the flash file. Periode!

Flash to AVI ? Rename the flash: .avi. That is it!
Flash to mpeg ? Rename the flash: .mpeg. You're done!
Flash to .wmv? Rename the file:  .wmv, and WMP will play it.

They are lying to us, totally distorting LYING.
Just rename the bloody thing!

Comments, please   :tellme:

I'm quite sure this is not the case. The only thing you're changing is which application the file will be given to. You are not changing the compression method and format of the video data. Probably what your viewing software is doing is simply taking whatever file is handed to it, and examining the contents to decide how to handle it.

You can look at this information yourself using tools like this: http://www.headbands.com/gspot/.

But, for example, my standalone DVD player can play MPEG2 files. If I put myvideo.mpg onto a DVD and insert it, the video will play. But if I take a divx myvideo.avi, rename it to myvideo.avi.mpg, and burn that onto a DVD, my player will still not be able to play it because it doesn't have a divx codec in its firmware.

I have of course no idea why my media players will play these renamed flashes. All I know is that some of them will never play a flash file, but if I rename the flash to .avi or .mpeg or .wma - they will play the file. WMP will start out by saying "This is not a proper mpeg file - do you really want to play it?" and I will answer Yes, and WMP will play it without any problems at all, even though it maybe (most likely) still is a flash; only a renamed one.

I have so far only tested on music video flash files.

[Edit]: You are quite sure - but did you test it?

To my surprise I just found a Flash To Video (avi, wmv or mpeg) converter that will keep the sync' between picture and sound: the $100 GeoVid Flash to Video Encoder PRO.

When it was a surprise it is not only because well estimated encoders like SUPER not will do this job properly, but also because I really couldn't think very high about the GeoVid app when I saw it open. The features and options are quite poor; you will not be impressed. But the result was actual a little impressive, and that should be what it is about, shouldn't it.

But A HUNDRED dollar??!! No; I am not going to buy this one!
- maybe I should try out the kid brother; a fifty dollar bargain...

Recently came across this one: http://www.smallvideosoft.com/

Look for Freez FLV to AVI converter (also handles FLV --> MPEG, FLV --> WMV).

Tried it out and it worked fine, but I didn't look for lip synch and I only ran it on a short clip.

They have other freebies too, like an iPod converter.  :D Yay freebies!

I will relegate my off topic comments to spoilers
If you suspect a program is merely changing the file extension, it's easy to check: compare the old and new files with Beyond Compare.

I'm certainly no expert, but "AVI" is a "container" format. AVI files can contain audio/video streams that use are compressed with all kinds of different codecs. You can get AVIs with mp3 audio and xvid video, ac3 audio and divx video, etc.

Incording to KMPlayer the AVI I happen to be watching right now uses Xvid and MP3.
Screenshot - 6_2_2007 , 12_11_01 PM.png

There are other container formats out there. A notable one is matroska. It lets you have DVD style chapters, multiple audio streams, built in subtitles, etc. Definitely worth a look if you're about to convert a lot of video.

BUT, what Curt is saying brings up a good point, why convert and loose quality if you don't have to. Before converting, drag the FLV into your media player of choice, if it works just associate FLVs with that player...

I *imagine* the main reson for this "non-converting" metode may very well be that the (music video) flash first was recorded as .avi / .mpeg or another video MUSIC format. And that the flash converting maybe primarly changed some video settings and not so much any audio settings??? But I really am guessing; I have no idea of the true reason.

---

Right now, as I write, Denmark is behind 0-3 against Sweden (european championship football qualification tournament), and they have only played for half an hour (30/90)!!
This is soo sad...  :(  Heyy!!!  1-3 Now!! NOW WE ARE COMING!!!   8)
[Edit]: 2-3 (61/90)  :)  [Edit2]: 3-3 (75/90)  ;D

[Edit3]: Total chock!!  29 seconds before end of game, a spectator ran into the court and tried to attacked the referee and actually grazed him. The rest of the match was cancelled and the result came within five minutes of "thinking": Denmark has lost the match, 0-3 !!!
 :o
 :(
In 1992 the European FairPlay prize in Football was not given to a footballer, but to the Danish spectators' union...
This is just sooo sad.  :( :( :(

I've downloaded a bunch of music videos in flv format that look fine as-is in VLC Player's full-screen mode.  I had to uncheck the "overlay video output" option (Preferences > Video) to get rid of some unwanted color effects that showed up in about 50% of the videos.

Well, I gave SUPER an honest try. Very poorly made UI, very un-user-friendly. I like tooltips and all, but I don't need them to pup up instantly every time I let my mouse stop for a split second.

Also, after trying to encode my first video the program just disappeared, no error, no nothing. It was as if I hit the X. That's enough for me.

I've used the AVISynth, NanDub, etc., etc, method a bunch, but I've found that I need to re-learn the process every time I haven't converted any videos for a while. I made a lil' tutorial thing which has helped me a number of times, check it out if you want... DVD to Xvid
It's pretty old (late '03 or older), don't follow it to the letter...

Anyone know of any 'tweaker' software for converting videos? I like tons of options, but am tired of using 6 different programs!

"A honest try", you say. Hmmm. Did you find the options?

Right-click anywhere in the program. No tooltips, if not wanted.
