A bit cheeky I know but can anyone  tell me I have a film which I downloaded as an avi file I can now play it with wmp ....but what file to I have to convert it to to play on my dvd player attached to my tv???

You need a transcoder capable of outputting to mpeg2 format... and preferably one that also happens to set up the various DVD structure files needed. There's several out there, dunno if there's any free ones, but try googling for something like "divx dvd transcoder".

Also, for example, some DVD players arte DIVX certified so that they can read data DVDs with DIVX on them. They're not all that expansive and you can find a list on the DIVX website.

http://www.f2ko.de/English/a2e/a2e.html : you'll find a there a freeware converter, quite basic but simple to use and working fine : AudioVideo_To_Exe.

Not ideally named but should be OK to do what you want.
