Windows Vista Pronunciation
« on: October 17, 2006, 11:42 AM »
My brother lived in Spain for a couple of years and after he returned, he had one of his Spanish friends visit my family for a couple months. My family has also had exchange students from other countries, including two from Spain. I took three years of Spanish in high school, and I currently have a Mexican sharing this apartment with me.

Whenever I see or say Vista I automatically pronounce it the Spanish way, "Vee-stuh," but pretty much everyone else I know says it the other way. I'm just curious to see if anyone else pronounces it differently than they would in their native language.

This reminds me of my very favorite chart in the entire history of the internet, which i think is possibly one of the coolest things i've ever seen:

Ha, yeah. I've lived in Idaho for as long as I can remember (with a short stint in Alaska before I can remember) and I visited New York State and was slightly ridiculed by my peers for saying "Pop." At that time I decided to start saying "Soda" since I figured that "Soda Pop" was the correct term and so saying either "Soda" or "Pop" could be appropriate. Then I returned back to Idaho and some months later at a family gathering my brother caught me saying "Soda" and he laughed at me.

Luckily I had an excuse. I was drinking a Jone's Soda. Hooray for a quick wit!

I always got weird looks for saying Package Store for a liquor store.  Must be a northern thing.

The weirdest one to me is "buggy" for a shopping cart in the south. WTF!?  ;D

I have lived in the south for almost 10 years now and still can't myself to say that one.   Just sounds too weird.

I suppose this was inspired by the controversy on how to pronounce "Linux" ;)

I like how a friend explained how Italians say the "a" sound as almost silent but more like a pause for emphasis of the preceding letter sound. Like the word "mozzarella", for instance. Pronounce it "mawtsuh-relluh" and you won't get anything from signore cheesemonger. But say "moatS' relL' " and you'll get some sloppy white goo that goes excellent melted over red sauce and linguine.
So i say it should be pronounced VeesT'

BTW-localization of dialect is a far-reaching and global subject. Ask why the Brits say "lorry" instead of "truck" or why the english-speaking Pinoys say "bonnet" instead of "hat". We could go on...

P.S.- You should also hold your hand palm up with your fingers together as if holding a marble at your fingertips when you pronounce it "Il Senso Italiano"

I figure it is a name offered by a (supposedly) English speaking company (if you can call what Americans speak English :P).

Personally I pronounce is Vi (as in victor) -sta (as in stand).

I wouldn't be surprised if MS pronounce it V-eye-star

Once everyone has to cough up some cash for this I think it is more likely to be pronounced XP !!

The OED gives one definition of vista as:
An opening or passage-way.
Far be it from me to speculate on which might come to mind in the context of this thread...

in german speaking countries it could be pronounced:

FISTA

(e.g. Volk = folk, & gets pronounced the same)

me, I'd pronounce it like Carol -
the "tuh" or "stuh" choices must be more of an american thing ...  :)

Here in NJ, home of many displaced Italians (and Tony Soprano), we pronounce that like this:

moot (rhymes with boot)-sah-rell (roll that 'r')

and that's not 'red sauce'...it's gravy.  :P

Being Spanish, I say it like it should. Vista. Just plain simple. But since I don't have the slightest about pronunciation, I guess the way would be "Vee-stuh", just like Deozaan says
