I have not used any of the other recommendations in this thread.  But I do like trayhostchecker so far.  I just started using it today.

Contro:
I use "PingInfoView" http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/multiple_ping_tool.html, though not in tray, it shows red icon when no connection.
