I am fed up with skype but is there an alternative?

If you and your friends have Google+ (a given if you use gmail), AND you use Chrome, Google Hangouts is your best option.
Go to: https://hangouts.google.com/
Choose the Chrome link on the "Download for:" bar, it will install as a Chrome extension.

That is as simple as it gets as far as Skype alternatives.  Any other service will want you to sign up with another web service, site, etc.
Makeuseof.com has a review of 6 different ones, but I think Google is your best option:

That's where I was going next.  And is a good option in many cases.
