I’ve tried a lot for that very same task and, in my opinion, the three free ones that are, at the same time easy to use are:
-VideoPad: Easiest, but kind of “nagware”.
-Olive Video Editor: Still in beta, but works well and the learning curve is not too steep. Lots of good tutorials in the web.
-Tool Rocket Vid Clipper: The one I’m using at the moment. Good quality, not too heavy results.

At the present time I have adopted AviDemux.

I have installed aldo Tool Rocket Vid Clipper: The one I’m using at the moment. Good quality, not too heavy results.
