Looking for a Sci-Fi short story about time travel

Target:
There may have been 'rockets' or space travel, but 'garden of tubes' doesn't ring any bells.  It's been a long time and lots more books since I read it so you'll have to forgive me if I can't add much more

Thanks all.  Rather than tubes in the garden I think it were streams, but not of water but of something that had the ability to cause time travel.  It's when the main character jumps over one of these streams, which is forbidden, that time travel occurs.  I also remember that at the beginning of the story he visits the garden as a child with his family.
