I've been thinking about printing out the internet. I hate buying refills for my printer and I'm wondering if anyone has had any success in refilling their cartridges using one of those kits that are being advertised?
I'd be interested in hearing how it worked, where you got it, and if even stupid, little (huh??), old, me could do it without ruining something??
I've got an old dot-matrix printer that would probably be cheaper to use but if I'm going to print out the internet I'd like all the pretty pictures included.

I've used ink jet refills with no problem.

If you have a DMP, you're probably using a ribbon? I used to just rewind the ribbon years ago, and that worked well enough.

But, printers are so cheap that it's probably better to just get a new one.

I'm currently using 2 laser printers and use refilled cartridges that are half the price.

I'm not sure if that helps...

If you're really printing a *lot*, you could set up one of those IV style systems where you have the ink in bottles piped directly to the cartridges.

I don't want to change the subject here but "rewinding"..............
Surely you didn't rewind those ribbons by hand, manually, twist, twist, twist, turn, turn, turn...huh???

I ask because I acquired a Canon Typestar 10 battery powered typewriter and the ribbon on that is completely see-thru at this point. I've checked it out thoroughly, it runs on D cells or a wart, but research indicates that the only possibility of finding a new ribbon for it lies in a visit to the Museum of Natural History and they don't sell items on display?

There are a zillion types of printer and typewriter ribbons around with a good possibility of finding one the same width as the one for that typewriter. With a suitable jury-rig maybe I could rewind a new ribbon into the old cartridge? what's your secret???
(my nephew brought that typewriter in..... he works for a moving and storage company and somebody they were moving dumped it. He thought he had found a laptop??)

Now back to our main program......

I read a piece by Vic Laurie recently that printer's ink is about $3000 a gallon. May be better to pipe in crude oil?

I'm having second thoughts, anyway. Think of the file structure alone to house the entire internet. Look at DC, and the Library of Congress, and Google!!! Wow, a directory tree to handle everything would make the Win8 registry look like a pimple,
I gotta find another hobby!

If you're looking at mass printing, a laserjet is the only way to go IMO. Even for color printing, as long as price is more important than perfect color reproduction, laser is far and away your best bet.

The tricky part with laserjets, in this context anyway, is paying close attention to the lifetime output and duty cycle recommendations for the printer as a whole and individual components. You can usually find rock solid used HP departmental or workgroup printers. still good for tens or even hundreds of thousands of pages, for extremely reasonable prices.

I'm beginning to think this is a bad idea. I've been playing with Google, trying to get a URL for the internet, but you get nothing useful. entrance to the internet doesn't come up with anything you can work with either. There's just no specific place to start printing!

And then, after you get it all printed, how do you file it? Dewey Decimal System? It's been years since I've heard that even mentioned. How much will it accommodate ?

Too many questions that I can't answer. I think I'll leave it alone awhile until I have more answers.

As I recall, those old DMPs had open reel ribbons. This battery powered typewriter uses a cartridge, sealed cartridge, but a wide X-Acto razor saw works nicely to split that plastic cartridge. It will reseal with regular PVC cement. Some specs on ribbon width are in order and I might get lucky and get that old typewriter working. Then I could send it to the Museum of Natural History with that last ribbon!

I had no idea until I read the post above and the post is available to all.

I must admit, if I had received the word sooner, I might have done something sinister???

I've only got about 300 floppies available and 8 or10 drives I could install and use.
BUT, I have an old IBM Winchester drive available. With indomitable courage, natural ability and a helluva lot of luck I could maybe connect that to Win8.1.1? I'll have to take a look at it!
