yWriter - free writers software for novelists

This is a free program to help you write novels; made by someone who has written a few.  nice way to let the world know about your writing.

I'm a programmer and a novelist, and yWriter is the result of 3 or 4 years of development. I really struggled over my first novel because I wrote whole slabs of text into a great big word processor file and tried to make sense of the whole thing at once. I then tried saving each chapter to individual files with great long descriptive filenames, but moving scenes around was a nuisance and I couldn't get an overview of the whole thing (or easily search for one word amongst 32 files) In the end I realised a dedicated program was the way to go, and yWriter is the result. It may look simple, but as the author of three books written with this tool I can guarantee it has everything needed to get a first draft together.

Interesting coincidence. After trying out quite a few of the apps recommended in the most interesting Note-taking software thread, I've been looking into writer's software. I came across a good round-up of the high-end shareware stuff: http://www.writersdigest.com/articles/harrigan_software.asp.

Back in the yWriter end of town, Rough Draft http://www.rsalsbury.co.uk/rd.htm gets regular use here. It has been recently updated and now it's pretty well my main "brain-storming" note thingy for now - nice and simple. yWriter is has more plotting / scenario-building features, but I like the way everything is kept as simple and as functional as possible.

And yes, it would be great if more of these apps had full Unicode support! I've swapped most of my fonts to Unicode.
